Apple iPhone 4G Upgrades at AT&T – Eligibility Dates Change

If you currently have a contract at AT&T on an iPhone, go and check your upgrade eligibility date. You will probably find it has been changed and that a new message indicates that you will soon be able to upgrade to a new iPhone for a fee of $18 when signing up for a new two year contract. That isn’t to say that the iPhone 4G will cost you $18, that is the upgrade fee.

If you are an AT&T [T] customer, head on over to wireless.att.com and click on the Check Upgrade Options when logged in. At this point you should see a message similar to the one below (if you are eligible)

Apple iPhone 4G Expected to be Announced Today

Today, June 7, will hopefully bring an end to all the Apple iPhone 4G leaks and rumours we have been hearing and seeing for the last few months. The main leak of the iPhone 4G from Apple [AAPL] was when Gizmodo managed to get hold of a prototype a couple of months back. Since then we have seen leaks spring out from a few countries around the world including Vietnam.

Now that we have seen the insides and outside of the iPhone 4G (or iPhone HD, or whatever it will be called), we are now expecting to hear official word from Steve Jobs himself today at WWDC.

Things that we expect to hear about the device are as follows…

The iPhone 4G is expected to have a 960 x 640 resolution effectively giving it four times the amount of pixels that the current iPhone 3GS has. The display is said to be similar to the iPad in that it will use IPS (in plane switching) along with another new technology called FFS (fringe-field switching). This could also get interesting in terms of apps for the Apple Pad… could the new iPhone apps optimised for a higher res look far better than they do now when scaled up? We hope so. Apple iPhone 3G runs Android 2.2

We have seen a few cases where an iPhone has been seen running Android. Normally the version of Android has been older like 1.5 or 1.6, but now we see an Apple iPhone 3G running the latest Android 2.2 built (Froyo).

Most features work on the port although Wi-Fi and audio does not at the moment. Calls and SMS messages can be made as well as web browsing. There is a problem though that when they say Android 2.2 runs on the iPhone 3G, it isn’t really usable in that battery life dies quite quickly, there is problems accessing the GPU and the iPhone runs very hot will running the 2.2 OS.

The iPhone used was running iPhone OS 3.1.2. To get this running yourself, full instructions can be found over at GadgetsDNA although we always recommend reading the instructions fully and also do this carefully to prevent bricking your phone. [Read more…]

World Cup Live on iPhone in UK

ITV in the UK will be broadcasting the World Cup live, starting June 11, to iPhone users. The service comes from Red Bee Media who will provide ad supported free live video streaming of the whole World Cup event this month.

Both ITV 1 and ITV 2 will be streamed to iPhone users over 3G and WiFi connections. The service and webpage isn’t live just yet, but on or around June 11 you will be able to watch the World Cup over here on your iPhone.

From what we read at Pocket Lint, the ITV is the only UK broadcaster that will screen the World Cup on mobile. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone Tethering to iPad Won’t Work – Not an AT&T Restriction

Earlier this week AT&T made a few changes to data plans for the iPhone and iPad which take effect starting June 7. For those who currently have a plan you can opt to keep it, ie a $30/month unlimited data plan. However with that plan you cannot use the soon to be launched iPhone tethering that is being made available in iPhone OS 4.0. To make use of that, you need to switch to a new 2GB plan for $25/month.

For those wanting to tether their iPad WiFi and iPhone together to use data that way, you are not in luck as a restriction (first thought to be an AT&T [T] restriction), but then confirmed as an Apple [AAPL] restriction has been put in place that prevents a bluetooth tethering connection between the two devices. Skype extend Free 3G calls on iPhone to 2011

Skype launched it’s update VoIP app over the weekend by releasing version 2 of the software. New features in the Skype update included the ability to make VoIP calls over 3G rather than being restricted to just Wi-Fi like the previous version.

However, when installing the software update and running it for the first time, a message popped up saying calls over 3G are currently free (ie, Skype to Skype), but that in the near future from August 2010 a small monthly fee would be charged for the service.

Skype has changed their minds on this and is now extending the free period from August 2010 to the end of 2010 and will start charging the small monthly fee beginning next year. [Read more…]

AT&T Makes Changes to Data Plans including iPhone OS 4 Tethering

AT&T [T] today pushed out a press release detailing new wireless data plans which they say aim to make mobile broadband/internet access cheaper.

Plans start with a $15/month entry plan or a $25/month plan with 10 times more data ie, 200MB vs 2GB. The plans will not be forced on users unless they want or need to sign a new contract, ie when getting a new phone for example.
out a contract extension.

“AT&T helps mobilize everything on the Internet – your favourite web sites, TV shows, music, games and social networks. Virtually everything previously done while sitting at a computer can now be done on the go,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “To give more people the opportunity to experience these benefits, we’re breaking free from the traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ pricing model and making the mobile Internet more affordable to a greater number of people.”

AT&T Stores Being Prepped for Apple iPhone 4G Launch

BGR is reporting that AT&T [T] is sending out engineers to corporate store locations to plan and set up new kinds of display in preparation for the next generation Apple iPhone that we are expecting to hear details about next week.

Not much is known about the new displays other than they are a “new kind of display” which we suspect is for the launch of the new handset. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4G Parts Surface Again

After several leaks regarding the next generation iPhone 4G, we again see another leak has surfaced. This time it’s for a spare part which we haven’t seen before. The spare part is a sub-frame assembly that is basically the centre part of the iPhone 4G that holds the thing together.

The site, iPhone Portugal, managed to purchase the sub-frame from China and have the part(s) delivered to them. Confirmation of them being genuine will be hard to achieve. ZDNet point out that no Apple [AAPL] logo can be found on the subframe and that it potentially could be just a knock off although the quality does look to be of a premium product standard. Apple iPhone running Android – Installation Just got Easier

Over the past month or so we have been keeping an eye on the progress of a guy who has managed to get Google Android running on the Apple iPhone. When the Android update was made available, the steps could have been a little challenging for some people. This is no longer a worry now though as a developer has managed to get automatic installation of Google [GOOG] Android OS on the Apple [AAPL] iPhone 2G and 3G models.

The auto installer is called iPhodroid and automates the Android OS installation on the iPhone. Just before we go on to a few more details you need to take note that Android on the iPhone isn’t really usable. It does a number of things like browse the web, make calls, send/receive text messages and what not, but the developer who created the build hasn’t looked at any power-management functions yet which means your iPhone battery will be dead within the hour. Skype iPhone Update brings 3G Skype to Skype Calls

Version 2.0.0 of Skype for iPhone went live today in the iTunes store. The main new feature that was added to the VoIP software includes the ability to now make Skype calls over 3G. This means the previous restriction forcing you to use WiFi has now been removed.

Currently there is no charge to make calls over 3G although in August 2010, a subscription charge will be made whereby you’ll be charged a small monthly fee to use the service.

In testing, the application works as good as any other VoIP app and if signal and cell area is right, you get a decent call. If not, it will be a little choppy sometimes. However, the ability to make cheap calls overseas with a 3G connection is a great addition, even if it is a little bit behind the times so to speak. Other VoIP software has had this ability for a while now. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4G HD Display Put Under a Microscope

The new Apple iPhone 4G is said to have a very high resolution screen with reports indicating 960 x 640 pixels.

If those reports are true then the screen will use IPS technology that has been seen in the new Apple iPad along with FFS (fringe-field switching) to make even clearer images. With the 960 x 640 resolution and the 3.5 inch screen size, this indicates a 320ppi making it a lot finer than other screens on phones such as the Google Nexus One.

The screen somehow landed in the hands of a company in the Czech Republic although it seems like they just got a screen and not a phone. They were unable to power it on, so the images captured are not lit by the screen. [Read more…]
