Awareness iPhone App Brings Outside Noise to Music

When using earphones, it can be particularly dangerous when outside noise is blocked out. This is even more the case when using earphones that isolate noise.

The Awareness app has been built for the iPhone and is designed to work in the background of your iOS 4 device. What it does is use the microphone to track ambient noise levels. When you first load up the app, you are presented with a meter. The iPhone app measures the surrounding noise and sets a default level for the environment you are in.

When you are walking down the street for example and a loud noise occurs above the standard level, such as a truck passing or a car horn, the application lets the noise through to the earphones so you can hear the external noise. [Read more…]

Einstein Project Newton Emulator for iPhone

The Einstein Project is expanding further and will be soon pushing out a Newton OS emulator app for the iPhone. The Einstein Project has been running since 2004 and has a goal of bringing the Newton OS (from Apple) on to various platforms. As the iPhone is believed by some to be the grandson of the Newton, it kind of makes sense that the old Newton OS should be made compatible with the iPhone.

The team behind it has managed to get it working (as seen in the video below). The Newton OS on iPhone is running a little slow at the moment although speed increases are expected over the coming months.

We also hear that Newton OS will be made compatible with the iPod touch and iPad through emulation. It isn’t clear if Apple [AAPL] will approve the app, and it is likely that they might not. However, if it does go ahead then it would be worth grabbing it just for fun and to see how the old Apple tablet worked around 20 years ago. [Read more…]

O2 Dataplans for iPad Changed

When the iPad launched in the UK, O2 offered 3GB of data for £15 per month or 500MB of data for £2/day.

For those using these plans the limits have changed. This isn’t good news though as O2 has lowered the data allowance for the £15/month plan to offer 2GB rather than 3GB. For the £2/day plan, the allowance has dropped to 200MB.

It isn’t clear when these plans changed (other than some time in June), although Apple site still shows prices for the original plans that were available for the iPad. [Read more…]

Samsung Galaxy Tab UK Price – £680 at Amazon

The Samsung Galaxy Tab price is still yet to be confirmed by Samsung although a number of retailers have now listed the tablet on their sites.

Amazon in the UK is the latest who first listed the 16GB model for a hefty £799 although shortly after the price was dropped to a slightly more respectable £680.

Although we can compare that to the 16GB Wifi+3G iPad at £529, it’s also a little difficult to compare as the Tab has a few extra features such as a camera and ports. However, people are likely going to compare it to the iPad as it’s essentially another tablet device that is the first main stream rival to the iPad. [Read more…]
