1TB SSD Sized like a Postage Stamp

Researches over in Japan have managed to successfully shrink down the traditional makings of an SSD (solid state drive) so small that 1TB of data could be stored on a device the size of a postage stamp. The company claims to have developed technology that shrinks the traditional sized SSD’s down by 90% making them ultra small. As well as shrinking the physical size down to near nothing, the chip also has energy efficiency boosted by 70%.

By creating SSD’s a fraction of the size and boosting their efficiency it paves way to a lot of small (in physical size) storage to be put in devices such as mobile phones and netbooks. [Read more…]

OpenOffice Hits the 300 Million Download Mark

OpenOffice has just hit a big milestone in that it has passed the 300 Million download mark just recently. This number was reached in almost 8 years as the project was first started in April 2002.

For those of you who are not aware of what OpenOffice is, it’s a free alternative to Microsoft Office and allows users to create documents, spreadsheets and do most other things that the paid MS version of the software can do.

300 Million downloads represents a good number of users who have downloaded or re-downloaded the software since it’s launch. [Read more…]

Retro 80s iPhone Mix Tape Case

We’ve seen a fair share of unique accessories for the Apple [AAPL] iPhone. This time the unique accessory is a case designed to look like a mix tape that a number of you will have made in the 80’s and 90’s.

The case has an image of an old FE 90 tape bonded to it to create a vinyl like exterior to protect the iPhone held inside. Inside the case is a soft scratch free grey felt to protect the screen and casing of the iPhone as well as providing a bit of padding. The case is hand cut and machine stitched. Although not washable by machine, the build of it certainly allows handwashing it in warm water to keep it clean. [Read more…]

The Superplexus

Perplexus is a handheld game that you can easily carry around with you due to it’s small size. The aim of the game is to get a ball bearing from one side of the sphere to the other side without it dropping off the track. The Superplexus is almost the same other than it costing $30 grand and being about 10 times larger than the original smaller model.

It’s a full 3D spherical labyrinth that requires you move a large 5/8″ wooden marble through the course. A number of obstacles need to be passed such as hairpin bends, spirals, stair cases and a vortex. It takes around 400 hours to build a single game, hence the $30k price tag, and the whole puzzle sits inside a sphere measuring 3 feet in diameter. [Read more…]

Nokia N87 AMOLED Camera Phone Details Leaked – Rumour

Yesterday we mentioned a new Nokia N series phone that was rumoured to be launching or at least unveiled at MWC this month. The phone was spotted as the Nokia N8 although perhaps the N8 was referring to this Nokia N87 smartphone as the specs look very similar.

The Nokia N87 is said to have a 12 megapixel camera built in that is capable of capturing images at 720p. It uses Carl Zeiss optics and has a Xenon flash along with night viewing. The processor powering the Nokia N87 is believed to be a 600MHz ARM Cortex 8 processor.

Wireless is built in to the phone which is expected to be 802.11b/g and perhaps n also. An A-GPS chip is also built in allowing for location based services as well as navigation to be used on the device. An FM radio transmitter is to be found in the phone also. How to Fix DVD Scratches

A long time ago back in September of 2007 we mentioned a technique on how to get scratches out of a phone screen which was comprised of using a bizarre concoction of an egg and a cloth soaked in a heated egg and then warmed up in the oven to create a substance that will fill the scratches… I have no idea if that technique works, and I’ll admit now that I have no idea if this new technique for fixing CD’s and DVD’s will actually work, but as all you need is a banana and a few other household substances then I’m sure it will be fine and easy to test.

The tutorial was created over at Unplggd and allows you to fill in scratches on DVD’s allowing them to be played again in a DVD. We assume it will also work on other optical media although that’s your choice if you test it. [Read more…]

Compaq AirLife 100

HP have built their latest netbook device that actually is a smartbook crammed in to a netbook if that makes sense. The device is called the Compaq AirLife 100 and it runs the Android OS, is powered by a Snapdragon processor (rumoured) and uses an SSD for storage.

The new device, perhaps a smartbook, includes always on connectivity and can run all apps that Android based phones do to allow for email and instant messages to be sent along with access to social networks, media and other information you typically keep on your phone.

By mixing the phone with a netbook profile it allows for a larger screen, measuring 10.1 inches and a larger keyboard that measures 92% of a full sized device. [Read more…]

Microsoft Office for iPad a “Possibility”

T3 managed to speak to Microsoft [MSFT] about the possibility of releasing Microsoft Office for iPad. Although Microsoft didn’t confirm if this was the case, what they did say is that they are looking in to creating an application allowing Office to be used on the Apple [AAPL] device.

The conversation was held at a private preview of the Office for Mac 2011 suite…

“Yeah, it’s something that we’re looking at,” said Microsoft Senior Product manager Mike Tedesco. “Obviously the announcement (of the iPad) is really fresh and there’s nothing to announce or nothing that I can talk to you about today.
