iPhone 5 and iPad 2 Could Get NFC

Early last year we saw a patent that indicated that NFC (near field communication) was heading to the iPhone 4. This of course didn’t happen which then led to speculation that the iPhone 5 might be the device which sees NFC implanted inside it.

Bloomberg is reporting today that Apple appears likely to add NFC to the iPhone 5 and the iPad 2 making them into mobile payment systems.

The main goal for Apple would be to get a piece of the $6.2 trillion Americans spend each year on goods and services, Crone said. Today, the company pays credit-card processing fees on every purchase from iTunes. By encouraging consumers to use cheaper methods — such as tapping their bank accounts directly, which is how many purchases are made via PayPal — Apple could cut its own costs and those of retailers selling Apple products.

More iPad Camera Rumors Hint It’ll Get iPod Touch Camera

Some digging around the latest SDK from Apple has revealed that the iPad 2 might get a camera similar, if not the same, as the current generation iPod touch. This means it will be somewhere in the region of 0.7 to 1 Megapixels. This is referring to the camera on the back of the iPad. As for the iPad camera on the front, expect it to be of VGA quality.

The information in the SDK was listed under the name of K94 which 9to5Mac have been told is a codename for the iPad 2. [Read more…]

Universal iPhone 4 Bumper Works with Verizon and AT&T

When Verizon announced the iPhone 4 recently, a couple of subtle changes were spotted. These revolved around the top left side of the phone where the volume buttons and mute switch are. With the slight change to the antenna on the Verizon model, the mute switch was pushed down slightly as were the up and down volume buttons. This raised a few questions about cases and what will happen.

What we see above is a picture of exactly what will happen. The two volume buttons will retain the same location as the AT&T bumper and the mute switch will be cut out a little wider to accommodate the mute switch in the higher AT&T location and lower Verizon location. [Read more…]

iPad 2 Case Shows Up Online

Another new iPad 2 case has been found at a Chinese accessory supplier. This particular case is different from the other iPad 2 case we saw a few months back in that it has different set of cutouts which give away a few things.

The new case indicates that an SD card slot is being added to the next gen iPad. Also, indications of a DisplayPort jack are also seen on the top of the case. [Read more…]

iPad 2 and iPhone 5 to Shift to Qualcomm Chipsets

Engadget managed to get some interesting info on the upcoming iPad 2 and iPhone 5. The details indicate that a shift to Qualcomm chipsets will be used. This shift will also be done on the next generation Apple TV from what we understand.

The new iPad will feature a dual GSM / CDMA chipset produced by Qualcomm and will mark Apple’s shift away from Infineon as its chipset maker to Qualcomm for all of its mobile devices. It’s not clear if the chipset being used will be based on the company’s EV-DO / HSPA Gobi variety or an entirely new design. Presumably, the strength of the new dual-mode chipset is that it will allow both Verizon and AT&T to offer the iPad simultaneously.

iPad 2 Camera Almost Confirmed in iOS 4.3

Since the launch of iOS 4.3 beta 1 a couple of days ago, a number of people have been snooping around the SDK and files to see what is available. A lot of hints can be found in the SDK that reveal what’s coming soon so to speak.

The next item to be found is a couple of shutter screens that are seen on all iOS devices with a camera. The difference with these screenshots is the size of them. Both the portrait and landscape versions have an image size of 1024 x 768 pixels which is the same size as the current iPad display. You might note here that this could indicate that the iPad 2 might not get a higher pixel density screen, or Apple might have just put these in as test images which in time, will be replaced with the actual resolution for the iPad 2 (which is still unknown). iOS 4.3 Lets you Change Function of Mute Switch back to Lock Rotate

While playing around with the new iOS 4.3 beta on the iPad, we came across an interesting menu item in the settings app that lets you now change what the Mute button does. You now have the option of switching it back to a lock rotation button.

If you think back to when the iPad first got iOS 4 the handy lock rotate button had its function changed to a mute switch. Since then, to lock the rotation you had to double tap the home button, swipe to the controls menu and then tap the orientation lock button. A number of people complained about this process and it appears in this case, Apple has decided to listen. [Read more…]
