After seeing the Apple iPhone 4G early, it has only really left us with the question of when is the release date.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is going to be held on June 7 and from what TechCrunch are saying, it is widely expected that Apple [AAPL] will announce the next generation iPhone 4G / iPhone HD handset.

Just a few weeks ago a mobile phone network called SaskTel said that they expected to see the new iPhone launch in June which also indicates that the WWDC event could be the one where the new iPhone 4G release date is unveiled. Thanks to the Gizmodo Apple iPhone 4G leak a couple of weeks back, we now know it is highly likely that the iPhone 4G will get a forward facing camera.

The reason mobile phones have forward facing cameras is usually for making video calls. In the latest iPhone SDK (beta 2), there are now references that go more in to detail on how the camera will work. This includes details of the type of connection to make it run.

The first message discusses video conferencing and indicates that the phone needs to register with a service somewhere to use conferencing features.

Windows Live Messenger for iPhone is on it’s way. The application will be launching in June along with the rest of Windows Live Wave 4.

When launched the Windows Live Messenger service will allow photos to be shared with users as well as provide social networking abilities.

The screen layout looks fairly standard and easy to navigate around with the main screen being home to a search bar, friends online as well as 4 buttons on the lower end of the screen to switch between various functions such as social, friends, chats and photo. [Read more…]

When Opera Mini launched for the iPhone a couple of weeks back it surprised us for a couple of reasons. First off, it showing up in the app store as an approved app was kind of unexpected and secondly over 1 million downloads occurred the day of launch.

TechCrunch looked further in to the numbers to see what they are like at the moment, and so far all is good. Currently the Apple iPhone is the third most popular handset around the world for Opera Mini users. Also the iPhone in the US is #1 on that list and the most popular handset. LimeRa1n comes from the iPhone hacker Geohot. Although the LimeRa1n tool hasn’t been announced just yet, we are hearing that it is expected soon and will be capable of unlocking iPhone OS 3.1.3 and iPhone OS 4.0 (no word on the iPad’s 3.2 OS just yet). A website has been set up that can be found here although at the moment it’s simply a rain drop on a black screen.

It is expected that when LimeRa1n does launch (hopefully next month) that it will also get rid of the current tethered boot that the BlackRa1n jailbreak requires on iPhone 3GS models. Some iPhone and iPod Touch users want the ability to use Wi-Fi to sync to their iTunes library. Right now there is no official way to do this and the only way to sync is by using the regular 30 pin connector via USB.

The video below shows an application loading up that allows the iPhone to do just that… sync to a computer wirelessly. From what we understand in the YouTube description, the application will be launched soon on the Apple app store which indicates it probably won’t require rooting your device. [Read more…]

Last week we wrote about Google Android running on an Apple iPhone. The video demonstration showed a dual boot setup where Android could be selected as an OS to run on the iPhone.

A lot of the features worked on the build including the ability to make calls and browse the internet. Some how-to instructions have now been made that show exactly how you can get Android running on your iPhone.

This morning we heard that Google Maps Navigation could possibly be heading to the Apple iPhone. Google [GOOG] have now stepped up to confirm that this is NOT the case and have said that this will not be happening.

It’s a shame as this feature would have been well accepted by the iPhone community and it’s bound to disappoint a few people.

Google are continuing to support the Android OS version of Google Maps Navigation (not a surprise there) and hopefully will continue to roll the service out to more users around the world. [Read more…]

The iPhone ViperSmart system is an app that costs $30/year to use and an extra $500 to install kit in your car that allows you to remote start/stop and do other things to your car from anywhere in the world.

Right now the system only works one way in that you tell the car what to do and it does it. This is changing though as SmartStart will now be featuring push notifications that allows the car to feed back information to you regardless of the application being open or not. We are hearing today that Google Maps Navigation, the free satnav service, could be coming to the Apple iPhone. This hasn’t been confirmed or set in stone yet, but the indications come from comments made by Google [GOOG] saying they are looking at bringing the free navigation software to other platforms.

Apple [AAPL] already uses Google Maps on the iPhone for mapping services, so the possibility of that being converted to a free navigation application is too far out of question.

With Google also bringing Google Maps Navigation to the UK just this week, this also indicates that Google do have plans to expand the service beyond the US and beyond the Android platform. [Read more…]
