HTC EVO 4G Scratch Test

The HTC EVO 4G is a new smartphone on the market launching just last week. Already, someone has decided to do a scratch test on the screen to see how the screen holds up under the strain of a razor blade, key and a screw. The reason the scratch test was done was due to a screen defect and the device having to be returned… so the owner thought it would be good to test how durable the screen it.

Surprisingly the screen held out very well with the owner saying that there was “absolutely no scratch on the phone.”

The same test was performed on the lens of the 8 megapixel camera around the back and rather than using glass there, it appears that the HTC EVO 4G uses plastic or regular glass as it scratched too easily. [Read more…]

Murata Ultra-Thin Waterproof Piezoelectric Speakers

Murata has managed to create some ultra-thin speakers that are waterproof. They use piezoelectric technology to product sound and measure just 0.9mm thick.

The speakers can be used in devices such as mobile phones,, cameras and laptops to allow for smaller form factors.

As well as being able to produce sound, the speakers are also waterproof. The waterproofing was achieved not by covering the holes which is a common method that reduces the quality of sound, but by using a new method in the design of the holes themselves. [Read more…]

LuminAR Robotic Pico Projector Display

LuminAR is a robot that has a small pico-projector attached. The device is capable of moving automatically around your desk space and can project images on to your desk, wall or augment information on to magazines or books if desired (or programmed to do so).

The project comes out of MIT and is described in that it… “reinvents the traditional incandescent bulb and desk lamp, evolving them into a new category of robotic, digital information devices”.

The pico-projector part of the robot functions just like a regular lamp in that you can put it in a regular lamp holder. The only difference with doing that is that you don’t get automated robotic movement which might suit some people. [Read more…]

Logitech Vid Allows HD 720p Video Calling

The Logitech Vid software is getting an update that will allow you to make calls with 720p HD webcams. As well as updating the software, Logitech is also launching four new HD wecams that will work with the Vid software.

Apple iPhone 4 – Skype Wants in on FaceTime Video Chat

When Apple [AAPL] announced the Apple iPhone 4 the other day, one of the new features called FaceTime was announced that would “finally” bring video calling to a mobile phone. However, we have seen this in the UK for maybe 7 or even 8 years now, but anyways!

We suspected the other day that companies like Skype would look to using or integrating with FaceTime that would allow video calls to reach beyond the current iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 requirement that is in place. If Skype could integrate it could allow the iPhone 4 to make video calls to millions of users on Skype and other video services.

Pocket-Lint spoke to Skype about this where they said it…

“would welcome the opportunity to work with Apple”, when it comes to enabling Skype video calls on the new iPhone 4.
