iPhone 4 Short Film Captured and Edited with iMovie

The iPhone 4 has quite an amazing camera for a smartphone. It’s both responsive and can capture HD video at 720p. Mixed with iMovie, you have an amazing HD video editing package.

The movie below was captured and edited with only an iPhone 4 for the camera and editing tools. The video is captured in HD 720p and was edited and uploaded to Vimeo in HD.

Many people have been skeptical of this, and whilst the iPhone 4²s video camera feature seems pretty good, we didn’t think it would be capable of shooting and editing a movie in good enough quality until we saw this short film by Michael Koerbel called ˜Apple of My Eye An iPhone 4 film.

iPhone 3GS running iOS 4 gets iMovie Unofficially

When Apple [AAPL] announced iMovie, it was released as an iPhone 4 only application. If trying to install the official version on the the iPhone 3GS or any other iOS 4 (other than the iPhone 4) device it simply doesn’t work.

If you have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS though, you can now actually get it to run by making a modification to the info.plist file. There are two changes that can be made to get it working on a 3GS. The first is to make a change to the front facing camera and simply set it to false. This allows it to work on iOS 4 on the 3GS. The other option to get it working on iOS 3 is to change the minimum system version to 3.0.0 which also forces it to work.

According to those who have tried it appears that it works fine despite the lower amount of RAM available. Something to note is that it does not work on the iPad if making these modifications which could be related to having no camera at all possibly. [Read more…]

Samsung Fascinate Heads to Verizon

Samsung is doing well with getting carriers to sign up to the new Galaxy S class smartphones. Already today we’ve reported that the Samsung Epic 4G (Galaxy S Pro) is headed to Sprint and that the Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S) is heading to T-Mobile US.

Now Verizon is getting a new Galaxy S class smartphone. On Verizon [VZ] it will be called the Samsung Fascinate and will pack all the same features such as a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird chip, a Super AMOLED 4 inch display and a 5 megapixel camera capable of capturing video at 720p HD. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 Repair Manual Uploaded

The Apple [AAPL] launch of the iPhone 4 appeared to be a huge success last week in terms of how many units were shifted. Over 600,000 pre-orders were taken on day one with Apple stores having large queues of people wanting to collect the new smartphone.

There have been reports of people dropping and smashing the glass on their new phones though, so iFixit has decided to upload a handy repair manual for the iPhone 4 to help users fix their own phone rather than sending it off to Apple (if warranty doesn’t cover the breakages).

iFixit uploaded 10 step-by-step guides which cover the following repairs… [Read more…]

Motorola DROID X Announced

Motorola a few days ago announced the Motorola DROID X. The DROID X has a 4.3 inch widescreen display, runs a 1GHz processor and is Flash 10.1 ready.

Features on the DROID X include a 1GHz processor and 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities as well as “loads of memory” as Motorola word it.

The Motorola DROID X will run Adobe Flash Player 10.1 when launched which for some will give it the edge on the iPhone 4. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 Hands-On

Yesterday we managed to get hold of an iPhone 4 to test and see what it’s like compared to other phones such as Android devices as well as a comparison versus the older iPhone 3GS.

Apple [AAPL] has finally changed the design of the iPhone with the new iPhone 4. Previously the iPhone original, 3G and 3GS only had slight cosmetic changes. The iPhone 4 has a complete redesign and I happen to quite like it.

It’s completely flat on the back unlike previous models. The back is covered in hardened glass and has a transparent bit of glass where the 5 megapixel lens and the flash can be found (note the improved camera and the addition of a flash… more on this later in the iPhone 4 review that we will be posting soon). Microsoft Kinect on Jimmy Fallon

The Jimmy Fallon show last night had the Microsoft Kinect being demonstrated. The Kinect is a new device from Microsoft [MSFT] that uses a camera system to track your body movements and basically use you as the controller.

The demonstration looks quite good. There is a little bit of lag in the game play in that when the people jump, the characters follow shortly after. However, it does look like a cool way to interact with games and could be a lot of fun when launched in a few months time (by the way, pre-orders are detailed here). [Read more…]

Microsoft Kinect Sensor – $150 and Ready for Pre-Order

Microsoft [MSFT] has revealed that the Microsoft Kinect will cost $149.99. The price was confirmed on the Microsoft store website where the Kinect just went up and has been made available for pre-order.

The official shipping date is not revealed although we expect that it isn’t too far away with pre-orders being made available just now.

The Kinect was announced at E3 last week where we found out that Kinect was the official name of Project Natal. Full details of what it can do and what’s included in the box are found below. [Read more…]

Samsung Galaxy S Pro Specs Appear

The Samsung Galaxy S Pro was first spotted recently with a few leaks. At that point, no real specs were known about the device. However, the specs have now surfaced.

The Galaxy S Pro has a Samsung/Intrinsity ARM Cortex A8 CPU running at 1GHz. It is about half an inch shorter than the EVO 4G from Sprint [S] and about 3/8 of an inch more narrow. The Galaxy S Pro has a slide out QWERTY keyboard that has been described as being smooth.

It is believed that the resolution on the Galaxy S Pro is 480 x 800 pixels and uses the Super AMOLED built by Samsung. The exact screen size isn’t known although it is believed to be 4 inches. [Read more…]

Lens Adapter for Sony NEX allows Leica, Nikon and Canon to be used

Rayqual has announced that a range of adapters is launching for the Sony NEX-3 and Sony NEX-5 cameras that will allow Leica, Nikon and Canon lenses to be used on the new Sony cameras.

Lens adapters for 35mm SLRs don’t really work well as the extra thickness pushes the lens forward and prevents it from focusing at infinity (you can still shoot close up, though. In fact, macro-extension tubes exploit this focus shift to do their job). But there is a good inch of room to play with on mirrorless cameras, so the adapters work well. I use one on a Panasonic GF1 to attach Nikon lenses. You lose auto-focus, but otherwise it works great.

Samsung Captivate Android Smartphone goes to AT&T

Samsung has announced the Samsung Captivate. The Captivate is an Android OS based smartphone that actually looks like it could be good.

The device falls in to the Samsung Galaxy S class of smartphones and has a Super AMOLED touchscreen measuring 4 inches. Powering the Captivate is a 1GHz hummingbird chip that can shift three times the amount of triangles when compared to a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU seen in devices such as the Nexus One.

A 5 megapixel camera can be found on the Samsung Captivate and it is capable of capturing video at a resolution of 720p. For storage, there’s up to 32GB combined with internal and external. [Read more…]
