Apple iPad with Spirit Jailbreak gets External HDD Support

When iPhone OS is jailbroke, a number of interesting things can be accomplished that were previously locked up by Apple [AAPL]. The latest new feature to be added is for the Apple iPad running OS 3.2 that has been jailbroke by Spirit. The user in the video below has successfully managed to use the iPad Camera Connection kit to connect up an external hard drive, mount it and access it from the iPad.

To achieve the external hard drive compatibility you’ll need any iPad along with an external hard drive, iPad Camera Connection kit, split USB cable for providing extra juice to the hard drive and some terminal software that allows you to mount the drive when needed. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 3G turned in to Wireless Hotspot for Apple iPad

For those who don’t want to spend an extra $130 + monthly costs on an Apple iPad 3G, but want to still connect to the internet when there is no wireless signal around, an application can now convert your Apple iPhone 3G/3GS in to a wireless hotspot allowing a wifi iPad or other wireless device to connect up and share the unlimited data.

The application is called MyWi and is available for download on Rock, ie, you need to jailbreak your iPhone to get it to work. Once installed you can load up the app, enable WiFii Tethering by switching it to On and a wireless network is then created allowing you to connect up your iPad and share the data connection. Apple iPad 3G Gets Hacked up Vodafone SIM to work in UK

John Benson ordered an Apple iPad 3G in the UK that arrived from the US this week. When opening it up, it obviously had an AT&T microSIM that won’t work over here. The problem is that in the UK at the moment, microSIM’s are not available just yet so rather than waiting a month to use it, John took a knife to his Vodafone SIM and chopped off the plastic edges to make it in to a microSIM.

The U.K. resident was faced with a disparity in SIM cards once he received his iPad from over the pond, writing on his website, “This morning, my shiny new iPad 3G 64Gb arrived from the USA! The only problem was, it had an AT&T MicroSIM and as yet there is no such thing in the UK.”

ClamCase turns Apple iPad in to a Laptop

ClamCase is a device that converts your Apple iPad in to a laptop style device. The unit has a keyboard that the iPad attaches to.

To connect the keyboard to the Apple iPad, Bluetooth is used. The idea appears to be just concept at the moment although the company behind it hope to have it available to purchase in the fall of this year. Prices are not known just yet either.

As well as converting your iPad to a laptop, it also serves as a protective case when folder up. Also, the keyboard can be opened up to allow the iPad to stand on it’s side, or prop up the iPad for easier use. [Read more…]

Apple iPad – 1 Million Sold – Official

After just 28 days of being on sale, Apple [AAPL] has sold 1,000,000 Apple iPads. Over 12 million apps have been downloaded and 1.5 million eBooks from iBookstore.

“One million iPads in 28 days-that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

That’s quite an impressive set of numbers for a product that has only been on sale a month today. The numbers will continue to grow at a healthy rate too as an international launch is set for this month with several more countries having both the iPad wifi and iPad 3G models towards the end of the month.

Jailbroke Apple iPad 3G Sends SMS Message

MuscleNerd has been working away on his new Apple iPad 3G this weekend it seems. As well as him and the dev team launching the Apple iPhone OS 3.1.X and 3.2 untethered jailbreak, they also managed to get the Apple iPad 3G to send an SMS message.

There is no GUI for this though and right now it is only working via command line, but either way it’s still a great accomplishment indicating that next in line is phone calls.

The SMS couldn’t be sent over the AT&T network though as there seems to be some block on the AT&T micro SIM sending messages. Instead, a T-Mobile SIM card was chopped up and made in to a micro SIM and this SIM was used to send the messages. [Read more…]

Apple iPad 3G Jailbreak

After being launched just a few hours, the Apple iPad 3G has been jailbroke. The iPad 3G jailbreak comes from MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team who managed to use spirit that jailbroke the iPad WiFi almost a month ago.

The image above shows the iPad 3G with the Cydia app which indicates the jailbreak was successful. Unfortunately the spirit jailbreak is not ready, but we expect that it isn’t to far away from being launched, so get preparing now.

One thing that is recommended is grabbing the SHSH Blobs for which ever device you have so that you have a backup of the signature just in case you need to restore the firmware. [Read more…]

Apple iPad 3G Teardown

iFixit have done a teardown of the Apple iPad 3G that started shipping yesterday. Some interesting things found within included 5 antennas for various reception. The blackbar of course which we have seen before on the pictures and the micro SIM slot tucked in the side of the iPad.

The Apple iPad 3G is unlocked and works on UMTS/HSDPA on 850, 1900, and 2100 MHz and GSM/EDGE on 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz. This makes it compatible with AT&T as well as T-Mobile on EDGE.

The five antennas include two for handling cell reception. One of them attaches to the black RF bar on the top of the iPad while the other attaches to the frame of the LCD screen. The third antenna is for the GPS unit and the fourth and fifth are for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. [Read more…]

Apple iPad 3G Delivered

One lucky Apple iPad 3G pre-orderer managed to get his iPad 3G delivered today. It was bound to happen when thousands, or hundreds of thousands of products are shipping and we suspect it has happened to others too.

Although there is no picture of the back of the iPad, you can still see the top edge of the device that has the black edging to show it is an iPad 3G. Of course it could be faked, but what would be the point of that!

AT&T Micro SIM Ready for Apple iPad 3G Launch

With the Apple iPad 3G launch being tomorrow, those who want service on the AT&T network will need to use a micro SIM. A micro SIM is very similar to a regular SIM card other than it’s about half the size. A user posted an image over to BGR showing how the new micro SIM cards look.

What we see is that the contacts are in the same location as a regular SIM card (which we already were aware of), but what we also see is that AT&T seem to be shipping micro SIM’s to customers now where if a larger SIM is needed in a device the user can punch out the larger card and if an iPad 3G or iPhone 4G is being used the smaller SIM can be punched out of the larger SIM.

However, once the micro SIM is punched out it wont be able to be used as a regular SIM unless a 3rd party adapter is used. We do not know of any 3rd party adapters yet for the new SIM card format, but no doubt someone will create one. [Read more…]
