Cool Concept USB Drives

Latest USB Drives
Concept devices tend to be cool with some weird and wonderful ideas. These new USB flash drives are no exception and extremely cool although probably a little bit crazy. Sponge bob is the first drive which starts its life as a USB drive and when the drive fills up with data it slowly changes in to a blowfish. This is a unique way of showing how much data is on the flash drive. It is supposedly going to work with a micro pump powered by USB which can inflate the cover of the drive.

The next USB drive is some kind of weird Orange. Again, it works by the same way the sponge bob drive does in that it is inflated according to the amount of free space available on the USB drive. More pictures after the jump.

Converting your Laptop to an SSD Drive

SSD Compact Flash
SSD (solid state drives) are very handy devices for a few reasons. First, they use less power and therefore can allow your battery powered device to run longer between charges. Second, they have no moving parts and tend to be built for slightly harsher environments. However, on the downside they are more expensive per GB to purchase. If money isnt a problem and you want to buy your self an 8GB+ card then read on.

This mod will allow you to convert a standard SSD drive in to a 2.5 inch laptop drive. The device is made by Addonics and is a compact flash adapter which allows you to connect 2 compact flash cards and connect them to where the regular laptop hard drive would sit.

On the downside also, you wont get the best speeds of the latest SSDs that are out but it is still a cool mod that can be done if desired.

Imation Flash Wristbands

imation_flash_wristband
The Imation Flash Wristband is a flash device which you can wear on your wrist. It stores information on it just like any other USB flash drive would, but is just bendy instead of being a rigid block of plastic. The idea of this device is that you can wear your storage rather then have it hanging on a keychain or loosely in your pocket. The flash wristband is made out of rubber which protects the flash drive from knocks etc… The memory capacity of the device currently goes up to 256Mb and colours available are black and blue.

Using the device is as simple as any USB flash drive. You just plug it in to your XP, ME or 2000 based PC and away it goes. It is compatible with older OS versions like Windows 98, but a driver needs to be installed to get it working. Compatibility with Mac is also available.

Privacy Drive

Privacy Drive
With storage on the increase in USB flash drives, we tend to carry more and more sensative information around with us and often without thinking about the greater risk of a device being stolen. More often then not your data is worth far more then the actual USB flashdrive it’s self. There is no doubt that encryption is needed. Most people tend not to be security types though and wouldnt know what encryption is. The Privacy Drive helps with this by including encryption software right on the flash drive it’s self. When you plug in the drive it prompts you to enter a password. No password = no data. The model shown has 1Gb of storage capacity which is not huge, but at the same time, enough to hold sensative information that you really do not want others to get a hold of. Protection is provided by 256bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). The flash drive runs at USB 2.0 speeds and ensures fast file transfers.

Pocketec 12GB Nano Harddrive

Pocketec 12GB Nano Harddrive
Portable storage is becoming more popular as time goes on. With time passing, we also see larger memory cards becoming available as well as larger flash drives. However, the seriously large flash drives still can cost hundreds and it’s not often worth spending that much knowing that in 6 months time the price will be half what it was when it first came out. So, along comes the Pocketec Nano drive. The nano drive packs 12Gb of storage on to it’s 1″ squared unit. Inside there is a small harddrive which stores all the data. With being able to store so much data in one place, you need to be aware that you run the risk of loosing a lot of data. As far as we can tell, there is no built in encryption so it might be worth while being careful what you keep on this thing. If it’s just your latest movies and MP3’s then I guess you have nothing to worry about.

D.A.V.E Seagate Wireless Storage Drive

Seagate have created D.A.V.E which interpreted means Digital Audio Video Experience. D.A.V.E is a small pocket sized hard drive which has 3 connectivity options built in which are USB, Wifi and Bluetooth. What this drive does allow that other drives do not, is carry much more data around with you and leave it in your pocket while you access it. It will allow you to carry an entire music collection, many photo albums, a number of movies and countless documents. When connected to the drive you can simply browse it like you would a memory card inside a portable device. Security is obviously a basic demand of any consumer therefore for those of you conscious of ensuring personal data is secure, the bluetooth function requires that you pair the device before it will allow any data transfers to occur. We can assume the wireless features also feature encryption keys, but this has not been confirmed yet. More details after the jump.
