Android 2.2 Could get Automatic App Updates

Google [GOOG] are expected to launch Android 2.2 sometime in May. For this release there is very little information about the build as Google now takes the stance not to pre-publish what will be included.

What we have here though is what is believed to be a leak that indicates automatic app updates will be included in the next build. What we see in the image above is the Android Market Place with a check box option to allow automatic updates of the specific app being looked at.

Of course, images can be faked quite easily although it seems like quite a legit picture of Android 2.2 running a new Market. [Read more…]

A lot of the features worked on the build including the ability to make calls and browse the internet. Some how-to instructions have now been made that show exactly how you can get Android running on your iPhone.

The instructions come thanks to Androidalot who have broken down every single step click by click so that even beginners should be ok with this. Remember this is for the iPhone 2G only at the moment though! [Read more…]

Google Nexus One might get Wireless N on Android 2.2

The next Google Android 2.2 update might bring wireless 802.11n to the Nexus One. This has become apparent because of Broadcom and Google [GOOG] releasing new drivers for the wireless chipset that the Nexus One uses.

Up till now and including Android 2.1, Google have not included these drivers in the firmware for Nexus One.

Looking at results of testing from the guys at Android and Me, it certainly seems possible that Google could include this in the next update as those guys managed to get 802.11n working on an Android 2.1 build. Full details of how that was achieved are over on the Android and me site linked above. [Read more…]

Dell Android Smartphones Unveiled – Flash, Smoke and Thunder

Three new Dell Android phones have been unveiled called the Dell Flash, Dell Smoke and Dell Thunder.

Dell Flash Android Smartphone

The first phone to be unveiled is the Dell Flash (pictured above) that measures just 11mm thick. This phone has a 3.5 inch WVGA screen, connects up to HSPA networks on 850 / 1900 and 2100MHz networks with 14.4Mbps being the download speed limit. On the back is a 5 megapixel camera that has autofocus and image stabilisation along with features such as smile and blick detection. Inside is 512MB of RAM and ROM and the phone accepts microSD cards up to 64GB in capacity. That obviously indicates the phone is not due out for a while yet, perhaps late this year with memory cards that size.

For connectivity it has WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and the CPU is clocked at 800MHz provided by Qualcomm (the MSM7230 to be precise). This particular CPU is part of Qualcomm’s next generation of CPU’s that aims to bring the performance of the Snapdragon 1GHz CPUs to the phone along with HD video capabilities.

When launched it is expected to run Android 2.2. More details at Engadget. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone runs Google Android

Here is something we don’t see everyday, an iPhone that has been hacked to run Google Android. The video (embedded below) shows Android running on the iPhone. Not everything is in place such as the Android functions on various menus. The iPhone has had a few keys remapped to allow easier navigation around the phone, such as the power button being the back button and the volume buttons also having their own functions other than volume.

It doesn’t run the greatest, but it is an early build which the developer says is closer to an Alpha release than a Beta release. It does show potential though and although scrolling isn’t the quickest in the browser, the screen transitions are actually quite impressive and appear to beat my own G1 in terms of load speed.
