Dell Android Smartphones Unveiled – Flash, Smoke and Thunder

Three new Dell Android phones have been unveiled called the Dell Flash, Dell Smoke and Dell Thunder.

Dell Flash Android Smartphone

The first phone to be unveiled is the Dell Flash (pictured above) that measures just 11mm thick. This phone has a 3.5 inch WVGA screen, connects up to HSPA networks on 850 / 1900 and 2100MHz networks with 14.4Mbps being the download speed limit. On the back is a 5 megapixel camera that has autofocus and image stabilisation along with features such as smile and blick detection. Inside is 512MB of RAM and ROM and the phone accepts microSD cards up to 64GB in capacity. That obviously indicates the phone is not due out for a while yet, perhaps late this year with memory cards that size.

For connectivity it has WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and the CPU is clocked at 800MHz provided by Qualcomm (the MSM7230 to be precise). This particular CPU is part of Qualcomm’s next generation of CPU’s that aims to bring the performance of the Snapdragon 1GHz CPUs to the phone along with HD video capabilities.

When launched it is expected to run Android 2.2. More details at Engadget.

Dell Smoke Android Smartphone

The next phone is the Dell Smoke that has a slightly smaller screenthan the Dell Flash measuring 2.8 inches. It runs Android Froyo and will be targeted at corporate users. The phone has a QWERTY keyboard under the screen that works in portrait mode which makes it similar to a Blackberry in looks although the Smoke is far better looking in terms of design.

The Dell Smoke is expected to launch the second quarter of next year (yes 2011). What you will get is a Qualcomm processor running at 800MHz (the MSM7230). The back of the Smoke has a 5 megapixel autofocus camera and 14.4MBps HSPA connectivity can be found on this device. Memory can be expanded through the microSD standard and is limited to 32GB on this model. Details at Engadget.

Dell Thunder Android Smartphone with 4.1 OLED Screen

The final of the three phones to be announced is the Dell Thunder. This device is also an Android based phone. The Thunder has a 4.1 inch WVGA screen that is OLED based. The UI running on top of Android 2.1 is called Stage which seems to be an update from what has been seen previously.

From what we hear, this device is based a little around social media and has Facebook and Twitter integrated. For text input it uses a virtual keyboard provided by Swype that allows for fairly fast input on the device. Flash 10.1 also is supposed to work on this phone and mention of Hulu is found in the documentation.

It is unknown what CPU is running in the phone but it is expected to be similar to the other two phones mentioned above. The camera is capable of 8 megapixel captures. The phone is launching Q4 this year on AT&T from what we understand. [Engadget]

It’s really a shame that we have to wait so long for some of these phones to come out. Hopefully they will run the latest Android OS when the phones are launched as 9 – 12 months can see a lot of changes to operating systems.
