O2 Confirm Apple iPhone 4G Video Calls, or just a mistake?

O2 released new calling plans last week called Simplicity. Within those plans it has been noticed that the iPhone specific calling plans mention video calling being priced at the same price as regular voice calls. Perhaps it’s just a mistake in that “if the iPhone could do video calls then it would cost the same as a voice call”. However, this mixed with details in the latest SDK indicate that the Apple iPhone 4G could perhaps have a front facing video camera to make video calls.

These rumours are starting again due to a patent that was filed by Apple [AAPL] that showed a new iPhone 4G device with a camera in the top of the bezel which would have that purpose. [Read more…]

Apple iPad Commercial Launched

Now that we know the launch date of the Apple iPad (ie, April 3 in the US), we now have the first official iPad advert that was first spotted during the 82nd Annual Academy Awards that were held yesterday. Steve Jobs was in attendance at the event.

The video doesn’t really confirm anything new from what we can see after watching it several times. Applications seen in the video include the ebook reader, email, video, pictures, facebook, web browsing etc… to just name a few.

The advert is 30 seconds long and can be seen below… [Read more…]

Apple iPhone FLPR Universal Remote Control

Just a few days ago we mentioned the iPhone RedEye universal remote control that used a device plugged in to the 3.5mm headphone jack of your iPhone to transmit signals to your TV, DVR and whatever else is remote controlled in your house.

Another company have come up with the FLPR universal remote control for the iPhone that uses the doc connector on the bottom of the phone to transmit IR signals to receiving devices. By adding the attachment to the bottom side of the phone it requires you flip the phone 180 degrees and use the upside down software.

FPLR lets multiple devices be controlled from the iPhone. Set up is easy in that you just connect the IR transmitter to the bottom of the iPhone, download the FLPR application from the App Store and then go through the menu’s searching for the devices you have in the database of 14,000 pre-programmed already in there. A microSD card slot is also to be found on the concept allowing for the phone to be expanded. Also the colour schemes of the iPhone have also been changed from just black or white. [Read more…]

Apple iPad to get WSJ – Murdoch Confirms

Confirmation of the WSJ heading to the Apple iPad has been given by Rupert Murdoch. An Apple iPhone application is already available and with the scaling that the iPad can do, that particular application should be able to run full screen. However, an iPad version is also being worked on so that the company can utilise the full resolution of the large screen. The app is currently under development.

The developers have managed to get hold of an Apple [AAPL] iPad although funnily enough it is locked down at night by lock and key, and to make things even crazier, the key is turned by an employee of Apple to make sure nobody sneaks the device home with them. [Read more…]

Google Responds to Apple / HTC Problems

Google [GOOG] have made a statement about Apple [AAPL] going after HTC in the crazy 20 patent case. Google have said

“We are not a party to this lawsuit. However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it.”

Google aren’t specifically named on the documents sent to HTC by Apple although a lot of the patents in dispute all revolve around Google Android OS based phones making a number of people believe Apple’s real target is Google. [Read more…]

Apple iPad has Ability to make Emergency Calls – Maybe

Since the SDK launched allowing developers to see what’s available in the Apple iPad a number of functions have been found. The latest finding indicates that emergency calls can be made from the device… how? we are not sure just yet.

The emergency call function was spotted when trying the passcode lock and entering the password incorrectly 5 times. On the fifth attempt it gives the option to make an emergency call.

The first thoughts I had which are in-line with many others is that it’s a simple mistake/bug that the Apple [AAPL] developers have left when modifying the iPhone OS. [Read more…]

AT&T CEO – Apple iPad to be Wi-Fi Driven

The Chief Executive of AT&T has said that those who buy the Apple iPad will probably not use a subscription service from AT&T due to not wanting to be tied in to any sort of monthly payment and that the iPad will be a Wi-Fi driven product. It isn’t clear if the CEO means that only the Wi-Fi model will be the popular one, or if iPad users will potentially buy a 3G model but not keep their subscriptions active (which are arranged on a month to month basis).

“My expectation is that there’s not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription,” he said during a webcast of an investor conference, adding that the device would be a mainly “Wi-Fi driven product.”

Apple iPad to go on Sale March 26 – Rumour

We are hearing rumours about the release date of the Apple iPad being March 26. No official data has been provided by Apple [AAPL] just yet although people close to sources have heard that it goes on sale at 6pm Friday evening (March 26). The rumour also goes on to say that those lining up for the iPad (ie, those who camp out) will also receive a special gift.

When the iPhone launched it followed a similar pattern in that it became available at 6pm on Friday June 29 in 2007 although no free gifts were handed out at this time.

The rumoured date is for the Wi-Fi version of the iPad as the 3G version won’t be shipping for another 30 days after March 26, so if you want the fully fledged model you’ll have to wait a little longer. [Read more…]

HTC Respond to Apple Patent Dispute

We mentioned earlier that Apple [AAPL] were suing HTC for 20 patent infringements. A statement has been made by HTC saying that they only caught wind of this through the media this morning and that they haven’t looked through the paperwork just yet but that they are… ‘committed to defending [their] own technology innovations.

‘HTC is a mobile technology innovator and patent holder that has been very focused over the past 13 years on creating many of the most innovative smartphones. HTC values patent rights and their enforcement but is also committed to defending its own technology innovations. HTC only learned of Apple’s actions this morning via media reports, and therefore we have not yet had the opportunity to investigate the filings. Until we have had this opportunity, we are unable to comment on the validity of the claims being made against HTC.
