Apple iPhone gets RedEye mini – Turns iPhone in to Universal Remote Control

ThinkFlood have created a new product called the ThinkFlood RedEye mini that converts your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad (when available) in to a universal remote control and TV guide.

The RedEye mini costs $49 and connects up to the 3.5mm headphone jack of your iPod allowing you to control a variety of systems such as a TV, DVR, Stereo, Digi-Box etc… and lets you control them all from the single remote control software created as an application.

To get the system working it requires that you either enter a unique code for the device you own, or put the iPhone RedEye mini in to training mode which can detect signals from other remote controls. Once achieved you attach the IR transmitter, load up the app and use a variety of methods to control your TV and other devices. Gestures can be used such as sliding a couple of fingers down the screen to lower the volume or flicking the iPhone to jump up a channel. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4G to get Front Facing Camera – Rumour

We hear a number of rumours about new Apple [AAPL] products when a new launch is expected. The last rumour indicated that the next gen iPhone would get a Super AMOLED screen that is created by Samsung.

The next rumour was started due to a patent that was spotted that is entitled “Apparatus and Method for Compensating for Variations in Digital Cameras” where a drawing of an iPod was shown which appears to have a camera in the bezel that is forward facing. The patent also covers details on both iPod’s and iPhone’s which is where the 4G iPhone with front facing camera rumour is being started. [Read more…]

Apple iPad uses PowerVR SGX Graphics Hardware

Confirmation has arrived from Apple [AAPL] that says the iPad uses the same family of graphics chips found in the iPad and iPhone.

Confirmation didn’t arrive in an official document, but instead it was tracked down in the iPad SDK Beta 3 documentation. At the moment it doesn’t specify which chip out of the family that it is, but just indicates that a particular chip is there.

Using OpenGL ES on iPad is identical to using OpenGL ES on other iPhone OS devices. An iPad is a PowerVR SGX device and supports the same basic capabilities as other SGX devices. However, because the processor, memory architecture, and screen dimensions are different for iPad, you should always test your code on an iPad device before shipping to ensure performance meets your requirements.

HP Slate to be Priced Cheaper than the Apple iPad

Apple [AAPL] announced the iPad a few weeks back with a very surprising price tag of $499 for the low end model. This was half the price of the expected $1,000 that was rumoured and was a welcomed price tag.

From what we hear now, it seems like HP are looking at undercutting that price when the HP Slate is officially launched. It is unclear now which iPad price they are going to beat as the WSJ article does say they are undercutting the iPad 3G price, but either way it seems there will be some what of a price battle between the two with HP trying to tempt Tablet users their way.

We find that in general, Apple prices tend to be higher than devices running Windows as users generally pay a premium for their hardware, so it wouldn’t surprise us if the Tablet was to weigh in cheaper. [Read more…]

Apple Aperture 3 Swallows Hard Drives in One

Just last week, Apple [AAPL] launched Aperture 3 in their online store. We are now hearing reports of the application eating up whole hard drives… ie, the software has some sort of memory leak that is eating in to virtual memory that fills up the hard drive.

The problem as far as we have heard isn’t universal, in that not everybody is seeing the problems. However, a good number of users are reporting issues with importing photo libraries and then returning to crashed Mac’s or disk space warning errors.

As everybody isn’t seeing the error message, it could point to a number of things such as a conflict with another application or perhaps there is some particular hardware that Aperture doesn’t like. [Read more…]

Apple iPad – Mid Range 32GB 3G-Wireless Model to be Most Profitable

iSuppli have provided estimates of how much profit each model of the iPad will rake in for Apple [AAPL].

The report shows that the screen is the most expensive component on the device, which is no surprise really, and accounts for about 29% of the cost dropping slightly as prices rise on the upper end models. The screen it’s self is estimated to cost $80 on each device with the battery, wireless, CPU, casing and other of the same features between the devices holding the same costs. What raises the price between models is the amount of storage each has (either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB) and whether or not it has 3G and GPS built in. [Read more…]

Opera will be unveiling Opera Mini for the Apple iPhone at Mobile World Congress this month. The company promise that they will offer a fast and easy to use way of connecting your iPhone to the internet.

To achieve the speed Opera will use it’s own compression technology to shrink pages down and load them up faster. As well as providing good page load speeds, the smaller pages also allow for lesser data transfer to be used which in some cases, could help you stay with in your limits.

Features included in the iPhone Opera Mini application are tabs, speed dial and a password manager. [Read more…]

Apple [AAPL] have taken their store down (globally) which indicates they are updating with new products, changes to products or perhaps something not worth worrying about. Apple iPad UI Detailed Tour

CultofMac have posted some interesting information on the Apple [AAPL] iPad and the user interface that it uses. Although a number of people have complained across the web about how it’s just a large iPod Touch, it makes you wonder if it does need to be different.

What Apple have said about the iPad is that it “improved the experience of doing every day computing tasks” ie, email, browsing and photo slideshows. This is where the iPad excels due to the larger screen. Although I can currently send emails from my T-Mobile G1, Dell Mini 9 netbook or regular laptop while on the move, that doesn’t mean it’s a streamlined process. Take the netbook for example, it’s small and takes several minutes to boot and finally load up web based outlook…. but the iPad aims to change that by providing a decent interface with quick connectivity.
