Google [GOOG] have made a statement about Apple [AAPL] going after HTC in the crazy 20 patent case. Google have said…
“We are not a party to this lawsuit. However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it.”
Google aren’t specifically named on the documents sent to HTC by Apple although a lot of the patents in dispute all revolve around Google Android OS based phones making a number of people believe Apple’s real target is Google.
At the moment we are unsure what involvement, if any, Google will have in the whole thing. Perhaps they are to provide financial backing or maybe manpower to HTC to fight the legal case. No effects are expected in the next few months due to these sorts of cases taking years to resolve, but long term effects could see a number of interesting outcomes over the next few years.
