Amazon Kindle 3G now $189

Amazon has lowered the price of the Amazon Kindle bringing from $259 down to just $189. It is believed that the price drop was in response to Barnes & Noble dropping the Nook down from $299 to $199 just recently although Amazon hasn’t confirmed if this was what sparked the price drop.

The Amazon Kindle at $189 is the smaller 6 inch model. The large 9.7 inch DX still cost $489 although that “might” drop in price soon to follow.

Perhaps another reason could be for Amazon to release a new model although right now, we have not heard anything to indicate this is the case. [Read more…]

Xbox 360 Slim gets Red Dot of Death

When a regular Xbox 360 breaks down the Red Ring of Death appears. This happened a lot of times since the Xbox was first introduced. Now that Microsoft [MSFT] has released the new Xbox 360 slim, we now hear that it wont have the RRoD. That’s not to say it wont get hardware failures mind you and instead we hear that a red dot will appears on the power indicator making it the Red Dot of Death.

Deciding to take the opportunity for a clean break, Microsoft has not included any red lights in the console’s “ring of light”, only green ones, so if something goes wrong this time around, you’ll get a …green ring of death. Which is surely more calming! red dot of death (see below).

O2 iPhone 4 UK Prices Revealed

O2 has announced the iPhone 4 UK price for it’s network. We already knew the tariffs as they were announced last week. Now we know handset prices although O2 has mixed the 24 and 18 month plans together making it a little confusing.

If you want an 18 month contract on the cheapest plan, you will pay £30/month for just 100 minutes, unlimited text messages and 500MB of data. For the 16GB iPhone 4, O2 has the 18 month price listed as £209. The same iPhone 4 on the 24 month plan is £5 cheaper per month at £25/month, but the handset price actually goes up to £279.

If you want to get an iPhone 4 for free only the 24 month £60/month plan is available which probably wont save you any money unless you intend to make a lot of calls. We think you are best sticking to the mid-range £35/month on an 18 month contract which sees you get the 16GB iPhone 4 for £179. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 US Pre-orders Also shipping July 2

Earlier today we reported that the Apple store had sold out of iPhone 4 UK pre-orders and that new pre-orders were not expected to ship now till July 2.

AT&T has also got the same message with all July 24 pre-orders selling out within 24 hours. That is certainly some achievement. Although some might say that there could have been a shortage of iPhone 4 smartphones available, hence they sold out so quick, we suspect that a lot were actually sold as server issues plagued the system all day on Apple [AAPL] and AT&Ts [T] side indicating very high traffic to the Apple store.

The best bet now will be to try stores that are taking pre-orders although we heard that Best Buy, Radio Shack and Wal Mart (and others we might have missed) are not actually taking pre-orders. [Read more…]

Murata Ultra-Thin Waterproof Piezoelectric Speakers

Murata has managed to create some ultra-thin speakers that are waterproof. They use piezoelectric technology to product sound and measure just 0.9mm thick.

The speakers can be used in devices such as mobile phones,, cameras and laptops to allow for smaller form factors.

As well as being able to produce sound, the speakers are also waterproof. The waterproofing was achieved not by covering the holes which is a common method that reduces the quality of sound, but by using a new method in the design of the holes themselves. [Read more…]
