When Opera Mini launched for the iPhone a couple of weeks back it surprised us for a couple of reasons. First off, it showing up in the app store as an approved app was kind of unexpected and secondly over 1 million downloads occurred the day of launch.

TechCrunch looked further in to the numbers to see what they are like at the moment, and so far all is good. Currently the Apple iPhone is the third most popular handset around the world for Opera Mini users. Also the iPhone in the US is #1 on that list and the most popular handset. In a recent interview, Google [GOOG] VP of Engineering Andy Rubin mentioned that the next version of Google Android, codenamed Froyo, would get Flash support… “…He also promised that full support for Adobe’s Flash standard was coming in the next version of Android, code-named Froyo”

It is expected that Android Froyo (2.2) will be launched sometime in May due to statistics packages already starting to pick up traffic from the platform under the 2.2 version.

Also in the interview Rubin spoke about Android eventually outselling the Apple iPhone due to the iPhone being stuck to 1 manufacturer (ie, Apple [AAPL]) where as Google take the open approach and have a number of different mobile phones running the OS. [Read more…]

Google [GOOG] had plans to sell the Google Nexus One on the Verizon [VZ] network. This has now changed and the Nexus One will not be going to Verizon.

Not many reasons have been mentioned, if any at all, although a statement released by Verizon indicates that they have never had an official stance on the Nexus One and have not once mentioned it.

‘Verizon had never made a comment or statement about the product coming to our network, says Verizon Wireless spokesman Marquett Smith.

‘In the beginning, Google made the statement about the product coming to the Verizon Wireless network and we never made comment around it.

Nokia today announced officially the Nokia N8 that we have been seeing leaked pictures of for a while now. The new N8 is to run the Symbian^3 platform and also has an impressive 12 megapixel camera using Carl Zeiss optics.

We have known most of the features for a while now with all the leaks going around, so it’s good to hear that most of what we heard was correct.

The 12 megapixel camera sensor also allows the Nokia N8 to be able to capture HD videos. A smart built-in editing suite is included on the device for quick edits to movies captured. The screen measures 3.5 inches and is also HD and capacitive touch. A HDMI connector is included on the N8 allowing it to connect right up to a HDTV if needed. [Read more…]

Two videos of Microsoft Office running on Windows Phone 7 have been revealed that show the UI and how it all will work.

From what we see, Microsoft [MSFT] seem to have got it right in that the UI looks great, features integrate very well, such as the ability to quickly edit documents.

We know that MS Office isn’t the most exciting of products, but it’s a product that needs to be spot on in terms of usability. [Read more…]

Google [GOOG] are expected to launch Android 2.2 sometime in May. For this release there is very little information about the build as Google now takes the stance not to pre-publish what will be included.

What we have here though is what is believed to be a leak that indicates automatic app updates will be included in the next build. What we see in the image above is the Android Market Place with a check box option to allow automatic updates of the specific app being looked at.

Of course, images can be faked quite easily although it seems like quite a legit picture of Android 2.2 running a new Market. [Read more…]

LimeRa1n comes from the iPhone hacker Geohot. Although the LimeRa1n tool hasn’t been announced just yet, we are hearing that it is expected soon and will be capable of unlocking iPhone OS 3.1.3 and iPhone OS 4.0 (no word on the iPad’s 3.2 OS just yet). A website has been set up that can be found here although at the moment it’s simply a rain drop on a black screen.

It is expected that when LimeRa1n does launch (hopefully next month) that it will also get rid of the current tethered boot that the BlackRa1n jailbreak requires on iPhone 3GS models. This is believed to be the case due to a video last month showing an iPhone OS device not requiring tethered boot. [Read more…]

Some iPhone and iPod Touch users want the ability to use Wi-Fi to sync to their iTunes library. Right now there is no official way to do this and the only way to sync is by using the regular 30 pin connector via USB.

The video below shows an application loading up that allows the iPhone to do just that… sync to a computer wirelessly. From what we understand in the YouTube description, the application will be launched soon on the Apple app store which indicates it probably won’t require rooting your device. [Read more…]

Vodafone UK have updated their website to include the Google Nexus One availability. The phone is up for pre-order at the moment for an April 30 launch although deliveries are not shipping till May 5.

The Google [GOOG] phone has been available in the US for a while now. It runs a 1GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm, has a 3.7 inch touchscreen and a number of features that make it one of the flagship Android devices available.

Regarding prices, they are quite good for us in the UK where you can actually pre-order on the Vodafone website rather than through google.com/phone. Mobile-Review managed to get their hands on a Nokia N8 recently for review to see if it’s as good as expected, or if it will be a flop for the mobile phone company.

We first heard about the Nokia N8 back in March where a leaked picture of the phone was found. Since then the phone has been spotted a few times in XML files and another location. Mobile-Review now have a hands on with the device.

The Nokia N8 is set to be the first ever Symbian^3 phone launched with launch dates being scheduled for for Q3 (previously Q2) with an unknown announcement date although it is expected to be announced in May or June. [Read more…]

Last week we wrote about Google Android running on an Apple iPhone. The video demonstration showed a dual boot setup where Android could be selected as an OS to run on the iPhone.

A lot of the features worked on the build including the ability to make calls and browse the internet. Some how-to instructions have now been made that show exactly how you can get Android running on your iPhone.

This morning we heard that Google Maps Navigation could possibly be heading to the Apple iPhone. Google [GOOG] have now stepped up to confirm that this is NOT the case and have said that this will not be happening.

It’s a shame as this feature would have been well accepted by the iPhone community and it’s bound to disappoint a few people.

Google are continuing to support the Android OS version of Google Maps Navigation (not a surprise there) and hopefully will continue to roll the service out to more users around the world. [Read more…]
