Last week, Apple announced that the App Store was about to hit 10 billion downloads since its launch. Along with that announcement the company also will be offering $10,000 USD to the person who downloads the 10 billionth application.

To move on past that news Asymco, a market intelligence site, has done a bit of number crunching and calculated that on average, each device that can connect to the App Store has downloaded an average of 60 apps. [Read more…]

iPad 2 Screen Resolution Could be 2048×1536

A lot of questions have been asked about what screen resolution the iPad 2 will have. Some suggested a Retina Display whilst others pointed out a Retina Display pixel density would put the resolution at 2560×1440 AKA, the same as a 27 inch iMac.

Thanks to some investigations done by StroughtonSmith, some images were found that were labeled [email protected]. Just before the launch of the iPhone 4, similar images were found that were called [email protected] which ended up resulting in a screen with a 2x resolution (on both edges).

This leads a number of people to thinking that the next gen iPad, AKA iPad 2, will have a 2048×1536 resolution. Although this might not technically be a “Retina Display” as it doesn’t quite hit the 300PPI mark, it does get close at 260PPI. [Read more…]

iPad 2 and iPhone 5 to Shift to Qualcomm Chipsets

Engadget managed to get some interesting info on the upcoming iPad 2 and iPhone 5. The details indicate that a shift to Qualcomm chipsets will be used. This shift will also be done on the next generation Apple TV from what we understand.

The new iPad will feature a dual GSM / CDMA chipset produced by Qualcomm and will mark Apple’s shift away from Infineon as its chipset maker to Qualcomm for all of its mobile devices. It’s not clear if the chipset being used will be based on the company’s EV-DO / HSPA Gobi variety or an entirely new design. Presumably, the strength of the new dual-mode chipset is that it will allow both Verizon and AT&T to offer the iPad simultaneously.

iPad 2 Camera Almost Confirmed in iOS 4.3

Since the launch of iOS 4.3 beta 1 a couple of days ago, a number of people have been snooping around the SDK and files to see what is available. A lot of hints can be found in the SDK that reveal what’s coming soon so to speak.

The next item to be found is a couple of shutter screens that are seen on all iOS devices with a camera. The difference with these screenshots is the size of them. Both the portrait and landscape versions have an image size of 1024 x 768 pixels which is the same size as the current iPad display. You might note here that this could indicate that the iPad 2 might not get a higher pixel density screen, or Apple might have just put these in as test images which in time, will be replaced with the actual resolution for the iPad 2 (which is still unknown). iOS 4.3 Lets you Change Function of Mute Switch back to Lock Rotate

While playing around with the new iOS 4.3 beta on the iPad, we came across an interesting menu item in the settings app that lets you now change what the Mute button does. You now have the option of switching it back to a lock rotation button.

If you think back to when the iPad first got iOS 4 the handy lock rotate button had its function changed to a mute switch. Since then, to lock the rotation you had to double tap the home button, swipe to the controls menu and then tap the orientation lock button. A number of people complained about this process and it appears in this case, Apple has decided to listen. [Read more…]
