In a surprising move from Microsoft [MSFT] it turns out that Windows Phone 7 Series will not have copy and paste (ie, a clipboard function). Microsoft have always offered this capability for as long as I can remember on mobile devices but for now users will not be able to move or copy text around between applications, or within a document.

Reasons for this are as follows… “There is a data-detection service built into the text-handling API that will recognize phone numbers and addresses, but Microsoft says most users, including Office users, don’t really need clipboard functionality.”

I can’t say I agree with most users not using clipboard functions. Although I use that feature a lot more on my computer, I still have a need for it on my phone. [Read more…]

The minimum specs have been revealed for Windows Phone 7 Series devices including the memory, processor and graphical requirements that all hardware running the operating system will have to adhere to.

The list starts off with the screen which needs to be multi-touch supporting at least four contact points. Sensors that have to be included are A-GPS, Accelerometer, Compass, Light and Proximity. The camera on the back of the device has to be capable of at least 5 megapixels and can include higher resolution sensors.

Memory wise the device needs to have just 256MB including an 8GB flash or more. The GPU needs to be capable of DirectX9 acceleration. [Read more…]

So far there have been three Windows Phone 7 Series devices confirmed so far. Engadget managed to get a picture of all three side by side. (See larger picture below).

The first phone on the left is a Samsung that was first announced just yesterday with the second (middle phone) being an unbranded ASUS device that was first spotted a few weeks back at MWC and then the LG slider phone that was also spotted on the Engadget show a few weeks back.

The Samsung doesn’t have a name yet although it was referred to yesterday as being the Samsung Slate which could have been just referring to it being a large touch-screen device. Either way, we’ll find out the official name soon. The phone it’s self has what is believed to be an OLED screen, 256MB RAM, 8GB Flash and directX9 acceleration. [Read more…]

The bad news has finally been confirmed by Microsoft [MSFT] saying that the HTC HD2 will NOT be able to get a Windows Phone 7 Series upgrade. This was kind of revealed last week, but not through an official channel.

For a few months there were a few hints around from various HTC Twitter streams as well as some information from Adobe forums indicating that the HD2 might be getting the update, but just last week some information was put together showing that the HTC HD2 doesn’t meet specific hardware requirements that Windows Phone 7 Series demands.

In particular Windows Phone 7 Series devices much have three physical buttons on the front of the device, the HD2 has five buttons. Also other restrictions within the hardware (nothing confirmed technical wise) is believed to be another factor. This could include the graphical capabilities of the device not being up to par. Several days ago, Engadget managed to capture on video a new, kind of mysterious, Windows Phone 7 Series phone that was claimed to be the first handset to be made available. We are now hearing that the handset will be called the LG Panther.

No other details on the phone are known other than what we obviously see in the picture of it in that it has a full QWERTY keyboard that slides out the left side of the device along with a large touchscreen, three physical buttons below the screen that are mandatory on all Windows Phone 7 Series handsets and we assume a 1GHz Snapdragon processor that is also mandatory. Last week we mentioned that LG were readying the first Windows Phone 7 Series handset ready for launch sometime between September and November this year.

Engadget managed to take a look at the handset whilst filming the Engadget Show. A quick look at the picture above shows that it appears to have the right things in place to qualify as a Windows Phone 7 Series handset such as it having 3 hardware buttons below the screen and a large high-res screen that’s capacitive touch. We’ve seen a number of rumours that the HTC HD2 will be getting an update to Windows Phone 7 Series. However, due to one simple technical requirement it closes off the rumour.

The hardware guidelines are quite specific in that phone manufactures need to have a specific processor (ie, the 1GHz Snapdragon from Qualcomm), a high-res screen, a 5 megapixel camera and a 3.5mm headphone jack… which the HTC HD2 already has. However, one of the “strict” requirements of the chassis 1 phones is that they also need to have three hard buttons below the screen. The HTC HD2 happens to have five which breaks the deal.

That’s the official line from Microsoft, at any rate. Natasha Kwan, General Manager for Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business in the Asia-Pacific region, told APC that the HD2 ‘doesn’t qualify because it doesn’t have the three buttons.

Microsoft [MSFT] have provided more details on their Windows Phone Starter Edition operating system that was first announced a couple of weeks back. Windows Phone Starter Edition will be available in two versions. One of them will run Office Mobile and the other will not.

ZDNet managed to find some details on how Microsoft plan to launch Windows Phone Starter Edition. From what the answers to various questions say we see that a couple of SKU’s are going to be made available with one which will have Office Mobile as mentioned above. We also hear that multi-language versions are being made available and the OS supports various networks including 2G, 2.5G, CDMA and TD-SCDMA radios. [Read more…]

There’s certainly evidence to support that the HTC HD2 could get an upgrade to Windows Phone 7 Series, but at the same time there isn’t any actual proof except for cryptic Twitter messages and postings on forums etc…

This next rumour comes from an Adobe representative on their forums where he answers questions based on when Flash will be hitting certain mobile devices and different OS’s along with some time-frame questions and answers mixed in.

We are hearing rumours that Nokia [NOK] are going to be porting Ovi Maps Navigation on to Android and Windows Phone devices in the near future. The information came as follows…

Greig Williams who is Nokia’s general manager for the Alps and South East Europe, told the Austrian newspaper Die Presse that porting Ovi Maps to Android and Windows Mobile “will be the next step.”

Reading between the lines a little here could reveal a couple of things. First is that they might want Ovi Maps Navigation to function on other platforms to give it away… but could it mean that Nokia are looking at creating Android and Windows Phone devices that will launch with Maps Navigation pre-installed? Finally we are hearing some news about when Windows Phone 7 Series handsets will be shipping. From what we have heard it seems like LG are to be one of the first, if not the first, to have some hardware ship later on this year sometime between September and November. At this point there are no official dates and most of it will probably be related to when Microsoft [MSFT] can get the final build ready and waiting to ship.

Windows Phone 7 Series will be made available on three types of chassis. The first called Chassis-1 are classed as the large touch-screen devices that have a 1GHz snapdragon processor. The next chassis, Chassis-2 are designed to look like Palm Treo devices and will feature a keyboard under the screen. Certain screen aspect ratios have to be used though which means the device will have to reach particular dimensions to get everything just right.

The final version which is Chassis-3 hasn’t been details although some are suggesting it will be a candybar style layout although if a slideout keyboard isn’t present in Chassis-1 or 2 then perhaps Chassis-3 will handle the slide out keyboards. [Read more…]
