Microsoft Windows Embedded Compact 7 Trial Download Available

Microsoft [MSFT] unveiled Windows Embedded Compact 7 earlier today. The new operating system is being designed to function on devices that sit between smartphones and desktop PC’s, ie Tablet computers and low powered netbooks/laptops.

It seems Microsoft has created Windows Embedded Compact 7 because Windows Phone 7 Series isn’t quite enough for a larger screened tablet, and that Windows 7 it’s self is just a bit too much for a tablet to need both in features and performance wise.

Microsoft has created a website explaining exactly what the new OS is and how it can be integrated in to the devices we use. The company is also offering a free trial download so you can see what it’s about yourself before they launch it in the near future. [Read more…]

Google Android Updates Could Slow to One a Year

If you follow the progress Google [GOOG] has made with the Google Android OS, you will notice that they release updates quite often. Many smartphones are about to get an update to Android 2.1 although Android 2.2 is due out any week now. Also many are still on 1.5 and 1.6 with a few on 2.0. In total, eight releases were made in the first 18 months.

All this fragmentation has happened due to the quick updates that Google has made and now it seems that they are now beginning to slow down over the next few months.

Andy Rubin from Google said that the slow down would bring it down to about two updates per year and eventually on to just one update per year which basically follows in line with what Apple pretty much do. [Read more…]

Some people have reported problems with their HTC Legend smartphones. The problem appears to be the way it shows grayscale colours in that it cannot show them properly.

The HTC Legend uses an AMOLED display which was criticised for the problems which prompted Tweakers to investigate further.

To do this the website used colour-testing equipment where the could test to see exactly what was happening under a microscope. The screen on the Legend did show problems with pink, grey, brown and green showing up rather than just grayscale (seen in the larger image below). [Read more…]

Toshiba Flexible LCD Panel – Bend to Zoom In and Out

Toshiba has created an LCD panel that is flexible. When bending the screen the program running on the screen can be zoomed in and out of. Google Earth has been used in this case as an example of how to zoom in and out of the planet. When bending backwards the planet zooms in and when bending inwards, the planet zooms out.

The screen is an LCD panel that measures 8.4 inches. It has an SVGA resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. The substrate used for the panel makes it just 0.1mm thick allowing it to be flexible. The bend sensor is also placed on the back of the screen.

Custom software was created to track the bend of the screen. The screen it’s self can be bent with a curvature of up to 50mm. [Read more…]

Microsoft Respond to Google pulling their OS

Yesterday we wrote about Google [GOOG] and the rumours that they were pulling Microsoft [MSFT] operating systems from staff computers giving them the choice of only Linux or Mac OS with the eventual move towards Chrome OS.

Although Google hasn’t officially made a statement about pulling Microsoft operating systems from it’s staff computers, Microsoft has gone ahead and responded.

When it comes to security, even hackers admit we’re doing a better job making our products more secure than anyone else. And it’s not just the hackers; third party influentials and industry leaders like Cisco tell us regularly that our focus and investment continues to surpass others.
