iPhone 4 UK: O2 micro SIM Details Emerge

O2 is following tradition of this past week and leaking just a little bit more information out about the iPhone 4 and has revealed details of how to pick up a micro SIM ready for the iPhone 4 UK launch. Unfortunately the details are for new and existing customers and not those who already purchased an iPhone 4 direct from Apple (unlocked).

If you are an existing customer and order an iPhone 4 from O2 (store pickup on June 24 only) you’ll get a new micro SIM with the phone. Write down the 19 digit number written on the card when you get it.

When installed in your iPhone 4 you need to switch the iPhone 4 on which then asks you to sync with iTunes. When you do that you’ll need your SSN number (the 19 digit number you wrote down) and once entered your new micro SIM will be active and old SIM will die… problem here is that there is up to a 24 hour delay before you can use the microSIM although we suspect it will be less. iPad microSIM not Compatible with iPhone 4

For those of you wanting to switch out your iPad microSIM in to your iPhone 4 when it arrives next week, Apple [AAPL] has confirmed that doing this will not actually work.

In the FAQ section on the iPhone 4 page the question and answer are provided as follows…

Q: Are iPhone 4 and iPad micro-SIM cards interchangeable?

A: No. Your iPad micro-SIM card will not work with your iPhone.

While it says the microSIMs from an iPad are incompatible, we believe that this is not so much a compatibility issue on a technical side, but rather the limited functions of the microSIM from an iPad which has no voice enabled on it. When calling the phone number of an iPad you just get an error saying unable to connect. [Read more…]

Three MiFi Review – First Impressions

Three recently sent us a Three MiFi for review to test and see how it performs and what it’s all about. MiFi devices are handy as they are quite small (the size of a small mobile phone) and act as a portable wireless hotspots connected up to 3G networks. What makes them good is that you can easily leave the device in a bag, or on the desk next to you and easily connect up any device by just entering the encryption key. Unlike the previous mobile dongles which required software to be installed on a PC or laptop so you could connect up to 3G, the MiFi wireless modems connect automatically by pushing a button on the device. Your laptop or smartphone then just connects up as it would to a router at home with no hassle. As there is no software to install it works extremely well with Wireless Apple iPads and easily allows the iPad to connect and work while out and about.

The model we got is the Huawei E5830 that comes with the unit it’s self, a short USB cable for charging, a SIM card and a battery. On the front is an information display (not a screen as such) that shows the status of the device. 5 LED’s are on the front which show if Wi-Fi is enabled, what the Mode is, signal, roaming and battery. iPhone 4 US Pre-orders Also shipping July 2

Earlier today we reported that the Apple store had sold out of iPhone 4 UK pre-orders and that new pre-orders were not expected to ship now till July 2.

AT&T has also got the same message with all July 24 pre-orders selling out within 24 hours. That is certainly some achievement. Although some might say that there could have been a shortage of iPhone 4 smartphones available, hence they sold out so quick, we suspect that a lot were actually sold as server issues plagued the system all day on Apple [AAPL] and AT&Ts [T] side indicating very high traffic to the Apple store.

The best bet now will be to try stores that are taking pre-orders although we heard that Best Buy, Radio Shack and Wal Mart (and others we might have missed) are not actually taking pre-orders. [Read more…]

Sony Ericsson X8 Announced

Sony Ericsson has announced a new smartphone in their Xperia lineup. The new phone is called the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 and from what Sony say, it takes the best from the Xperia X10 and the mini X10 versions and puts those in a package costing less than ‚¬200.

The Xperia X8 uses a very similar UI to the X10 mini. When launched it will either run the Android 1.6 OS from Google [GOOG] and then shortly after receive an update to Android 2.1, or it will launch with Android 2.1 depending on timing and the market it is going to. However, there is no mention of Android 2.2 just yet unfortunately. [Read more…]

AT&T Hit with iPhone 4 Pre-order Security Issues

For those ordering the iPhone 4 in the US yesterday, you’ll probably be more than aware of the issues that arose from trying to make a simple order. Some are reporting that they tried for up to 3 hours trying to get a pre-order through while others are now also indicating that they saw other peoples accounts when completing the order process.

This news follows an incident last week where 114,000 email addresses were made available of iPad 3G customers. This was also a security fault at AT&T.

AT&T are unable to recreate what has happened to customers but did say that nobody saw any credit card details, addresses or social security numbers. Either way, it’s a pretty big mess up on their behalf. [Read more…]

Vodafone iPhone 4 UK Price – Could Match 3GS

Yesterday some leaked screen shots made their way around the internet from a Vodafone test site which showed the iPhone 4 tariffs in the UK. We now see that the phone could actually be more expensive if the 3GS prices are followed. If what we hear is correct then we have been told the pricing will match the 3GS pricing with the 1GB data limit also.

Yesterday the iPhone 4 UK price screen shots revealed that the Apple iPhone was going to be free on £65/month contracts (32GB model). The 3GS pricing sees this jump up to a free iPhone 4 on a £70/month 18 month contract.

Pricing on the lower end would stay the same though with the £30/month contract bringing in the phone at £280. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 UK: Reserve a Contract iPhone for Collection on June 24

The Apple store might be down and not allowing pre-orders of the iPhone 4 in the UK, but if you head on over to the online retail store you can reserve an iPhone over there for collection. The good news with doing it this way is that you get 3 options when purchasing. You can select from PAYG, SIM Free or Contract. We just pre-ordered a contract model ready for collection in Brighton on June 24.

Unfortunately contract details are not readily available just yet, but as there is no real commitment other than logging in to the Apple website to let them know who you are, you can either just not show up, or just choose something different on the day of launch.

We suspect that when collecting and paying for your iPhone that you’ll be presented with all the network options so you can make a choice in store for what you want, and get it subsidised too. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 UK Price – £499 and £599 PAYG

After a week or so of waiting, Apple [AAPL] has now added the iPhone 4 to it’s store. The price with no contract is £499 for the 16GB model and £599 for the 32GB model.

As previously rumoured just last night, the White iPhone 4 is not available just yet. We have heard September sometime before you can get your hands on it.

The good thing about buying direct from Apple is that the phone is unlocked allowing you to choose any network you want. [Read more…]
