iOS 4.3 Personal Hotspot Passes GPS Details to iPad

Apple rolled out iOS 4.3 recently and with that came the ability to use the iPhone 4 as a personal wireless hotspot for up to 3 users (generally a paid extra on your contract). What we didn’t know is that when connecting up to the wireless hotspot with a WiFi iPad 1 or 2, the GPS data is shared with the iPad and allows you to pinpoint where you are on a map.

Prior to being able to do this, the regular WiFi iPad could not get GPS information due to the A-GPS module only being included on the 3G model. Having this feature bundled in is quite handy, especially for those wanting to see quickly where they are on an iPad. [Read more…]

iTunes 10.2.1 Update Released

iTunes 10.2.1 has become available for the Mac in the last few hours. This update comes very shortly after the 10.2 update. Following the link to the knowledge base article provides no details as to why this update has been released, so we assume that Apple found a couple of bugs in preparation for the iOS 4.3 update that is due on March 11 (perhaps earlier).

The only information provided shows that the 10.2.1 update prepares iTunes to sync with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad when using iOS 4.3 although 10.2 also was released for this purpose. [Read more…]

iOS 4.3 Launching Today

OS 4.3 was expected to launch in a few days time on March 11 along side the launch of the US iPad 2. We now hear hints that it could be launching within the next few hours. Along with the launch, we also know that the Personal Hotspot feature will be launching, although a chargeable service in most cases.

Another interesting bit of information comes, thanks to BGR, in saying that the rumored 3 Wireless Users limit is actually not a hard limit and that the iPhone 4 supports up to 5 users being connected. However, it is up to the carrier to decide what the limit is. By default it is set at 3, but can be lifted if the carriers so wish. [Read more…]

The Complexities of Why iPad Has no HDMI Port

When Apple announces a new iPad or any other iOS, it comes as no surprise that a HDMI port is not built in. We originally put this down to Apple wanting to control the way we connect to our iPad or iPhone in that we use the standard 30 pin dock connector. We also believed it to be that Apple doesn’t want to mess with a design by having a side full of ports. On all iOS devices (not inc Apple TV), Apple keeps a clean look around the edges by having a small amount of buttons and a single port to connect to a computer. The only other slot available is the discretely positioned microSIM slot that hides behind an almost invisible cover.

Chris Alexander has another take on this though in that he says the HDMI port is actually related to costs and licensing. [Read more…]
