Spotify Comes to the iPod

Spotify is in the process of rolling out a new service to regular iPod users. This includes those with an iPod classic, iPod nano and iPod shuffle which will see each of the devices capable of being connected up to the Spotify app on the PC or Mac. Once connected with the regular 30 pin connector, the iPod will show up in a new Devices section.

With that connection, you can now sync across to your iPod any tracks that you own. You also have the ability to download tracks or/and complete playlists that you have saved. The pricing drops to as low as 50p per track in the UK depending on how many MP3’s you purchase.

iOS 4.3.3 To Fix Location Tracking – Update Coming Soon

A new version of iOS will be launching soon. The new update will be version 4.3.3 and will fix a few recently uncovered problems such as the location tracking issue.

The changes made to location include the decrease in the size of the database, down to 7 days I believe. Also, this particular database will no longer be backed up by iTunes. We also hear that the location based data will be wiped completely when the location services are switched off.

Apple Responds to Location Data Questions

Over the last week it was revealed that the Apple iPhone and 3G iPad was storing location data within an unencrypted file on the iPhone/iPad and any computer that the device syncs to with iTunes. Apple has now responded to a number of questions to explain why it does this and what it will do about the amount of data that is being kept.

iOS Location Tracking File Could be Just an Oversight

Yesterday, an app was released that was able to read a file generated by iOS (and backed up to computer with iTunes), that shows where your iPhone or 3G enabled iPad has been since the day you purchased it. The file is called consolidated.db and uses cell tower information to give a guide as to where you have been.

Although there’s some obvious privacy questions here, the main questions are why this is allowed to happen, and what exactly does it track? A map of what the consolidated.db file looks like when placed on a map… program available here.

Rovio to Add Angry Birds Sync Tool to Popular Game

Angry Birds has been downloaded millions of times, up near 100 million times to be exact. One problem that has always existed with the game is that when you play it on more than 1 device, you need to start the game from the start. For example, you complete 3 worlds on the iPhone version, get a new iPad, download the game and you have to start right from the beginning on your iPad.

This can be frustrating for those avid and casual gamers who want to continue on from where they left off. Thanks to a tweet sent out by Rovio, it seems that a way to sync games might be introduced within the next few months. The system will be called Angry Birds Sync and from what we can gather, it’ll allow you to to sync your progress among a number of platforms so that when you load it up on the iPad, you play from where you left off on your iPhone.

Apple Patent Reveals a Hybrid DisplayPort/USB 3.0 Connector

Apple has won a patent for a new hybrid 30-pin/USB 3.0 connector that could be used for high-speed transfer to and from an iPhone. The connector looks similar to a regular Apple 30-pin connector, but rather than connecting to just a USB 2.0 port, the new one will be capable of connecting to USB 3.0. We also hear that this could include Thunderbolt for high speed data transfers.

Yet this latest hybrid connector looks like a winner and one that we might see come to market later this year in handhelds or in 2012 when Intel Macs debut with USB 3.0. But let’s be honest here: Wouldn’t we all like to see this debut on the iPhone 5? Hmm, I think that I’m hearing a thunderous yes on that question.

Some recent patents hint that Apple is working on making elements of the UI more graphical. What this means is that contacts could change from the plan scrolling text list to thumbnails of the people you want to call. The same could be said for music lists and other lists within the UI. AT&T Could Be Clamping Down on Jailbreak Tethering

Users are reporting that AT&T are contacting them in regards to tethering plans. The text message, and in some cases an email, seems to be targeting those that have jailbroken their iPhone and basically says:

Did you know tethering your Smartphone to a computer requires a tethering plan?

From what can be figured out, it seems to have been sent to users who use the MyWi to get free tethering rather than using an official “tethering plan” that AT&T charges for. It also seems to be going to those users who fit the above, and have the old unlimited data plans. [Read more…]
