FaceTime Could Land on Second Gen iPad Before Christmas

The second gen iPad is expected to land around April time in 2011. This would follow the pattern that Apple [AAPL] uses for the iPhone in that a new model is released each year.

However, we are still hearing more rumours that Apple want to push FaceTime in a big way which could mean that in November when iOS 4.2 for iPad launches, we could also see a second generation iPad.

New features on the second iPad would of course include front and back facing cameras allowing FaceTime to be used. We also expect a bump up in RAM from 256MB to 512MB and perhaps a higher resolution display. [Read more…]

FaceTime for Mac and Windows Rumoured

FaceTime currently works between iOS 4 devices that have a front facing camera only. Rumours are circulating at the moment that indicate a client for the Mac and Windows could be launching that would allow a FaceTime call from an iPhone 4, for example, to a PC.

It is expected that the Mac version would be built in to the iChat software. Although it is a rumour just now, we suspect that it could be true as Apple [AAPL] is wanting to push FaceTime a lot. By integrating with the desktop it would allow video calls to be used by more people. [Read more…]

Apple Patent Reveals Clip on Zoom Lens for iOS Devices

Apple [AAPL] might be launching a clip on zoom lens for iOS devices. The information comes from a patent found by Patently Apple that reveals a small attachment that clips to a device such as the iPod touch or iPhone.

We have seen a few different third-party lenses before for the iPhone, but none of them were officially created by Apple.

It is unknown at the moment if Apple will move ahead with the idea, or if it will just stay an idea. We suspect that with the increasing pace that technology changes that a need for this type of lens might be irrelevant if the glass and optics of the small cameras can be enhanced enough within the body of the phone. Apple Changes Stance on Third Party Tools in iOS

Apple [AAPL] has changed it’s stance on using third party tools in the development of iOS apps. Prior to this change the tools were banned which included Adobe Flash CS5.

The changes now permit these tools to be used, “as long as the resulting apps do not download any code”.

It’s certainly a surprising move and one which we assume developers will jump on. [Read more…]

iMovie App Updated for iOS 4.1

The iPhone iMovie app has been updated with the launch of iOS 4.1. The latest version of iMovie (version 1.1) has a number of new features that improve on the software. The first is that it is now compatible with the latest iPod touch.

The ability to split clips has also been introduced which was a problem before as you had to keep jumping out of iMove to go to the photos app to split video.

Music looping has been added as well as an In-App tips page. [Read more…]

Apple Could Sell 28 Million iPads in 2011

Maynard Um with UBS Investment Research has suggested that in 2011, Apple [AAPL] might sell 28 million iPads.

Maynard Um with UBS Investment Research issued a note to investors this week, in which he increased his price target for AAPL stock to $350, up from $340. He said there is no evidence that the iPad is having a negative effect on Mac sales, but it is “adversely affecting the PC industry.”

The report goes on to say that sales of traditional notebooks seem to be pressured by the launch of the iPad. [Read more…]

iPod touch 4th Generation Teardown

iFixit managed to get hold of an iPod touch to tear down. The iPod touch went on sale this week after being announced just last week at the Apple Special Event.

The iPod touch is very thin and hence, a lower resolution camera was used as the 5 megapixel version from the iPhone 4 just wouldn’t fit with the technology used today.

The new touch uses an A4 processor although it comes packaged with 256MB of RAM (just like the iPad) rather than the 512MB of the iPhone 4. [Read more…]

iOS 4.1 Download Now Available

The process takes around 10 – 15 minutes to download, reboot and install the latest iOS on to the iPhone. Once done, you’ll get HDR photos, access to Game Center and a few other smaller details.

The new iOS version isn’t a major update, but does bring a few handy features to the iPhone. [Read more…]

Samsung Orion 1GHz Dual-Core ARM Cortex A9 Chip Announced

The Samsung Galaxy S has a fast CPU inside that allows it to shift three times the amount of triangles when compared to a Nexus One and iPhone 3GS.

The chip used inside is about to seem old though after a new announcement came today about a chip called the Samsung Orion. The Orion runs at 1GHz, but rather than being a single core device, it’s a dual-core which brings more power to devices it is used in.

The chip is an ARM Cortex A9 that Samsung say can achieve the following… “5 times the 3D graphics performance over the previous processor generation from Samsung,”. [Read more…]

Nike+ GPS App Requires No External Sensor

Nike has created a new Nike+ app for the iPhone and iPod touch that lets users track their running progress without using the external sensor attached to a shoe.

The new app called Nike+ GPS is compatible with the iPhone 4, 3GS and the iPod touch 2nd gen through 4th gen. Of course the iPod touch doesn’t have a GPS sensor. For those with a touch, you’ll be restricted to tracking runs through the accelerometer which means you wont get maps of your run (unless you have an external GPS case). [Read more…]

iPod touch gets Vibration for FaceTime and Games

The latest generation iPod touch has a vibration motor installed. This is revealed thanks to the FCC teardown that we mentioned last week.

It is expected that vibration will be used for incoming FaceTime calls. The motor is also confirmed by Apple [AAPL] on the accessibility page (quoted below).

If somebody wants to start a video call with you, you?ll receive an invitation — along with a vibrating alert — on your iPod touch asking you to join. Simply tap Accept, and the video call begins.
