iPhone 4 Augmented Reality App Uses Gyroscope

Since the iPhone 4 has launched we haven’t come across too many apps that use the built-in gyroscope.

However, today we came across Acrossair. Acrossair is an augmented reality app that allows you to search for things with an augmented reality overlay on a live camera feed. The iOS 4 compatible app when running on the iPhone 4, makes use of the built-in gyroscope to add a more silky smooth layer on top of the video feed. Previous versions for the 3GS etc… were a little jerky whilst running. [Read more…]

BlackBerry Storm 3 Details Leaked

Yesterday, the BlackBerry Storm 3 was spotted in a document. Today, we noticed over on Engadget that they managed to get hold of a screen shot of a training manual that shows the smartphone is getting a few upgrades. The upgrades that will appear on the Storm 3 indicate that it will be more capable of running BlackBerry OS 6.

The RAM on the Storm 3 will be double that of the Storm 2 giving it 512MB to work with. The camera will increase to 5 megapixels and wireless connectivity is bumped up to 802.11n. Another decent feature is the ability to make the Storm 3 in to a wireless hotspot although that is listed under the “coming soon” banner which we assume will not be available at launch. Nokia Kinetic Concept

We see quite a few cellphone concepts on our travels around the internet. Some are worthy of a mention such as the Nokia Kinetic concept that was designed by Jeremy Innes-Hopkins.

The phone it’s self is unique in that it has a rounded base that houses an electromagnet that can make the phone stand up when an alarm goes off or a call is received. To cancel the alarm you can just tap it back down.

When the phone is automatically standing up, it can also be used to make hands free video calls if needed. [Read more…]

Brother Create Self-Charging Batteries

Brother has created a new battery sized generator that is capable of charging another AAA battery attached to it. The battery charged through vibration and when you shake the battery it creates enough power to charge the battery. The battery sized generator also comes in a AA battery size.

To get it to work, Brother have put “an electromagnetic induction generator and an electric double layer capacitor” inside. Although regular vibrations wont be enough to power a gadget such as a digital SLR camera, we could see some use for these in low powered devices like remote controls for the TV where chucking the remote around the room would actually serve a purpose and keep the batteries running. FaceTime Coming to iPod touch and iPad

FaceTime is currently only available on the iPhone 4 and only can be used when calling another iPhone 4 device.

Apple [AAPL] is bringing FaceTime to other devices though. The main question is based around how it will work though with iPod touch devices not having a phone number. BGR managed to get the details which show that your Apple ID will be registered with your device and when someone wants to connect with FaceTime to you, they simply use your email address.

By using push notifications it will allow incoming FaceTime requests to pop up on the iPod touch and other iDevices allowing calls to be initiated. [Read more…]

iOS 4.1 Update – What’s Included?

CultofMac have looked in to what new is coming with the iOS 4.1 update that launched in beta to developers just last night. We already know that the signal bar is being redone with the lower 3 bars being raised slightly and a whole new and accurate formula to represent what signal users have.

Also included in the iOS 4.1 update are changed and a revamp of the Games Center application as well as FaceTime favourites and a camera app update that sees auto-rotate being added to the application. Currently the layout stays the same with the icons rotating.

As expected, there isn’t really much added to the new iOS 4.1 and that’s to be expected on an update that arrives so soon after the initial launch of iOS 4.0. [Read more…]
