Back in February we mentioned the Horizon H-Cell 2.0 Hydrogen Fuel Cell. At that time it had a launch date for March detailed. We hear now, after a short wait, that it is now available to purchase.
The Hydrogen Cell kit is designed for radio controlled cars. The RC car required needs to be 1/10 in scale and the kit fits in most models although in some cases of smaller car body shells, they might need to be slightly adjusted to accommodate.
Some impressive numbers show that the Horizon H-Cell 2.0 can keep a car moving at 45MPH or more for up a full hour which is quite impressive considering a battery powered only version would only go for single digit minutes. [Read more…]
This flying object is built by an Australian company called Cyber Technology and is capable of vertical take off and landing. The Cyber Quad as it’s called has four ducted fans to provide lift to fly it around as an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. As well as being able to fly around it does have a real use in that a HD camera is attached that can beam back live video from locations it is scouting out.
One recent example was when it was used on an oil platform where the Cyber Quad was flown in to capture video of what was happening and any damage that had been caused. It is capable of flying for about 40 minutes on a single charge, but as it’s easy to manoeuvre it can easily be perched on a pad so that the camera can be moved around while the Quad isn’t flying to save battery life. In the past we’ve spoken about remote control cars and rc helicopters but how about remote controlled movie characters??
Well, Buzz Lightyear, as many will know, is the famous character from the Toy Story movie that was originally released back in 1995. Now, 15 years later, you can get hold of your very own (or for your kids of course) Buzz Lightyear remote controlled toy.
The Buzz Lightyear remote controlled toy measures approximately 16″ in height and is fully programmable allowing you to control it’s hands, head, arms and legs. Sensors can be found on Buzz which can detect motion and sound as well as being able to respond to prompt commands found in the users manual.
ThinkGeek are now selling BUGLabs. BUG’s are various items which can either secure things, track things with GPS, read barcodes, draw pictures, update Twitter and control robots. The BUGS snap together in a modular type way and once connected you create some simple JAVA to control the devices. The system is open-source meaning you also get access to a bunch of enthusiastic developers.
Because BUG is open-source, it doesn’t impede your creativity. If you’ve got an idea for a gadget, it’s easy to throw it together. For example, your garden is being chomped on by some unseen entity. Snap a motion-detector and a camera onto the BUGbase, write some Java, and you’ve got gadget that’ll catch the family of deer that roams through your yard. Unhappy with Google maps street view? Snap on the GPS module and the camera, and code your BUG to take geotagged photos at specific intervals and roll your own. Got an RC helicopter? Snap on the vonHippel breakout-board module and the touch-screen module and code an interface to fly your helicopter on your BUG. Are you a cartographer? Snap the GPS and the touch-screen modules on, a smidgen of Java, walk to the corners of your property, and bang zoom, you’ve got a map.
The PicoFlyer is the worlds smallest functional RC helicopter. It’s rotors are 60mm in diameter and the helicopter can fly for around 3 minutes. Looking at the screen shots it reminds me of the insides of a tiny RC car (the Tomy ones) and from what I can tell it’s made of 3 motors (2 for the rotors and 1 for the rear rotor) and charges just like the BitChargE cars.

The picture above shows an unmanned quadrocopter built by Ascending Technologies. The quadrocopter was built in partnership with LaserMotive and is powered by Laser.
To get it to work, the underside of the quadrocopter was fitted with photovoltaic panels that provide energy to the machine when lasers are fired at it. By keeping a constant beam on the underside the quadrocopter was able to fly for 12 hours unmanned. [Read more…]
The guys at MIT have come up with a concept idea that will allow 3D displays to fly around. The project is dubbed Flyfire and uses a bunch of miniature helicopters each of which house LED’s that can individually light up.
The helicopters fly synchronised and images are beamed to the array of LED’s in the helicopters to make a large flying image. At the moment it is unknown how far the MIT guys have gotten with this concept idea as flying a single helicopter is hard enough, let alone a few thousand of them flying within inches of each other.
From what we have found out, it seems the helicopters all react to each other. It seems that when one moves, the rest follow to keep the image stable in the air. [Read more…]
WickedLasers asked if we could review another of their high powered laser pens. Of course I said yes as no matter how many laser pens I have seen in the past I still find they are very cool (although dangerous if not used correctly). The laser is named the Photonic Disruptor and unlike every other laser that requires safety specks to be worn to protect the eyes, the disruptor is supposed to be aimed at people’s eyes to temporarily disorient them. In the words of WickedLasers it is described as…
an extremely effective, non-lethal, waterproof high powered green laser built specifically for rugged, harsh environments. This laser is classified as TALI¢ (Threat Assessment Laser Illuminator)…. Flytech created the unique DragonFly last year which was a seriously different flying RC toy. Now they have created the Bladestar which could kind of be compared to a helicopter in some ways. It has a large rotating blade and 2 rear rotors that are opposite each other. Three sensors help keep it out of trouble by detecting the floor, ceiling and walls. It allows the Bladestar to fly it’s self, or alternatively you can use the remote control. If you want to be truly unique then you can guide the robot RC Bladstar by using your hands to block it’s sensors and guide it around.
