Google has added a new view to Google Maps. When planning a journey you now have the option to specify a helicopter view of your route. The reason behind the change is so that you can fly along your route before driving it to get a sense of where you are going and what you’ll see on the way.

FliPhone – iPhone Controlled Wi-Fi Helicopter
The FliPhone is a program which allows you to use the accelerometers on the iPhone to fly a model helicopter. By tilting the phone you can control how the blades and whatnot are moved around. However, there is one problem in that the iPhone doesn’t have a transmitter compatible with a regular RC helicopter. To solve this problem wi-fi on the phone was used which connected up to a Linksys router to get an IP address. Along with using SSH and various other nerdy type stuff the RC helicopter can now be controlled by the iPhone wirelessly. [Read more…]

Cool RC Planes

Scale RC Models
RC planes, helicopters and cars are cool. I have seen a few RC planes and jets, but not actually seen scale models of real planes such as RC 747s, RC Concordes and others. Over at funny pictures you will see a bunch of planes that have been made, scaled down and actually being flown around.
Laser Tag Helicopters

Helicopters are cool, especially when they are remote controlled. Mix two RC helicopters together with a game of laser tag and you are on to a winner. This set of helicopters has just that. You have 2 helicopters which are armed with a transmitter and sensor. If one shoots the other then the injured helicopter quickly looses power and falls to the ground dead. This could give hours of entertainment. The only sucky side of all this is that RC helicopter battery life generally isn’t that long.

Indoor RC Plane – Aero Soarer

Indoor RC toys are becoming more popular over the last year or so. The Picoz RC Helicopter is one of my favorite due to it’s tiny size and the ability to fly around your living room and not destroy anything.
Tomy have now released the Aero Soarer which is an indoor RC plane. It weighs next to nothing with it being made from polystyrene (Styrofoam for you in the US) and is light enough to fly without much power. The planes controller has 2 functions. The first is the controller for the plane which allows you to increase the the throttle which makes the plane go up and decrease to go down, also it allows you to steer the plane. The second function is that it doubles as a charger for the plane. There is no mention of how long it takes to charge, but average usage for RC flying toys are around 5 – 10 minutes of flying on about 20 – 30 minutes of charging.
The Aero Soarer is also customisable although I am not 100% sure yet how you can customise it. Maybe you can chop off a bit of the wing and shape it better, or maybe add LEDs.
It is available from Play-Asia for $19.90.

FlyTech RC DragonFly

RC flying toys are great. The FlyTech RC DragonFly ads a unique twist to the range of flying planes and helicopters by actually having wings. To make this actually work the DragonFly is constructed with light weight material. This allows the flapping wings to give enough uplift for this to fly. As seen in the video after the jump, the dragonfly can be kept in control, be used indoors and be a lot of fun to fly.

Micro Mosquito Helicopter – Picoz Beater

The Micro Mosquito is another cool tony helicopter that you can fly from the comfort of your living room. It is similar to the Picoz, but is it better? The Picoz is very nicely priced at just short of 30 pounds. The Micro Mosquito is priced at just short of 70. The mosquito looks great. It defines what tiny is (well, at least for the next 2 months) and it is also very functional. In the box you get a launch pad, controller and the micro mosquito. 45 minutes of charging will get you about 10 minutes flying time which is not the best considering you have to wait patiently for 45 minutes for 10 minutes of paying. Appart from that it seems it cannot be faulted and would make an ideal present for those who want a cheaper alternative to the fully priced petrol powered rc helicopters.

Solar Powered Helicopter
This German made woddern helicopter has solar panels fitted to the blades causing them to spin when in direct sunlight. Of course it doesnt fly… but does make for a nice knick knack to be sat on your windowsill.

ThinkGeek is currently selling the RC Micro Metal Gyro Copter with a 38% discount.
Pictured here we have a new rotor blade for a helicopter called the Blue Edge Rotor. It was designed to cut down the noise that a helicopter makes when it’s blades skim through the air and actually quietens the whole thing down several notches.
RC cars and RC Helicopters are perhaps the best toys around. Thanks to Silverlit you can now play with both together in the form of the Heli-Mission RC SWAT Truck that hides an RC helicopter in the back of it.
