Sonic 4 Screenshots Revealed

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 is launching in the summer of this year on the XBox 360, PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. We finally have some screenshots of what the game looks like in it’s back to basics 2D side-scrolling form.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 was first revealed as project needlemouse back in September last year where we heard at the time that Sega were going back to the look and feel of the original Sonic game from the early 90s.

Apple iPad Book Store to get 30,000 Free eBooks

When the Apple iPad launches next week, the launch will also see 30,000 free eBooks in the US. The free eBooks come from the Gutenberg Project that has a library of books whose copyright has now expired.

Steve Jobs made comment earlier this week that said iBookstore would offer free eBooks although the amount of books and where they came from were not said.

From this information revealed we find out that 30,000 eBooks will be made available. For those out of the US the book selection might differ even to the point of not getting free books at all as each country has different copyright terms which could mean a book free in the US is not classed as such in the UK. Google Set Top Box to Daisy-Chain with your Current TV Box

Google [GOOG] are creating a Google TV as well as a set top box it is believed to bring the Android operating system to the TV.

We have heard previously that Google have teamed up with Intel and Sony to create the chips and TVs that will run the new Android OS. We also heard that a set top box was being created that would bring Android to older TVs. Rumours are now saying that the Google set top box won’t actually replace your current box, but instead, will daisy chain between your current box and your HDTV.

“In other words, the MVPD’s set-top’s HDMI output would be connected to the Google TV set-top’s HDMI input, and then its HDMI output would be connected to the TV. The authorized TV channels would still be delivered, but Google TV would collect data from the MVPD’s set-top and introduce an entirely new UI for users to control their TV experience, to include searching and browsing channels. It would also add a host of new interactive web-type capabilities around the content.”

Samsung Galaxy S gets Hummingbird Chip to give 3x Polygon Performance

Website Android and Me have been investigating the technical specs of the new Samsung Galaxy S Android smartphone and in that investigation have found that the device runs their new S5PC110 application processor that contains an ARM Cortex-A8 along with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU. The result is that the smartphone is capable of drawing up to 90 million triangles per second.

The Cortex-A8 is referred to as Hummingbird and is claimed by it’s designer Intrinsity, to be the fasted processor around.

90M is a lot of triangles and when compared to other mobile phones it really does put the Galaxy S ahead in terms of graphical capabilities. The numbers below (quoted from Android and Me) show how many triangles per second the four leading devices can handle (which includes 3 Android devices and the iPhone 3G S). [Read more…]

Glasses Free 3D Prism Patterned Screen Design

Engineers in Taiwan are working on building a 3D display that required the viewer to wear no glasses to see. The system works using a 3D prism pattern that when put side by side they send different light signals to each eye creating a left and right channel.

To function correctly users need to sit in specific positions so that the light shows correctly to each eye. Although in testing it works, the main problems are with light crossing over channels with either movement of the head or being slightly in the wrong angle. Obviously it has a while to go before it reaches main stream.

The new 3D display system also works with multiple viewers although they will need to sit in specific locations like pictured above. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 3G S Untethered Jailbreak in Progress

Earlier this year Blackra1n was released that allowed you to jailbreak your Apple iPhone 3G or 3G S. The problem with the phones running the latest boot rom was that a reboot of your phone required that you tether your iPhone to a PC or Mac and reapply the Blackra1n jailbreak. This was related to something with Apple [AAPL] using NAND flash for storing certain files.

Although a tethered jailbreak works fine in that it takes seconds to click the Blackra1n button when booting up your phone, it can be a problem if you are out and about and need to boot your device for some reason.

After a few months of waiting, George Hotz has managed to do it again by creating an untethered jailbreak for the Apple iPhone 3G and 3G S as well as it “probably” working on the iPad too. [Read more…]
