ASUS Eee Tablet gets a Hands On

We already mentioned the ASUS Eee Tablet earlier this week, but today came across another hands-on that shows a bit more about the device and how it works etc… The ASUS Eee Tablet is really a jazzed up eBook reader perhaps on steroids and looks quite amazing from what we see.

The Eee Tablet has a 10 hour battery life and has an impressive 2450dpi touchscreen resolution that a pen can be used on. Other features include a 2 megapixel camera on the back along with a USB port, microSD slot and a fairly reasonable price tag of $199. [Read more…]

Toshiba AirSwing Motion Based User Interface

Toshiba AirSwing is a technology that allows users to wave their hands in front of a screen to control menus and objects on the screen.

The technology behind AirSwing uses a standard webcam to track a user and then with software, it is capable of tracking hand movements and gestures converting them in to movement on screen. For example you swipe your hand left, the menu will rotate around the same direction etc…

It isn’t clear if this technology will ever go mainstream although for laptops with webcams built in, it could be handy for flicking through photos without having to touch the screen or keyboard. [Read more…]

Kno Dual-Screen Tablet gets a Hands-On

The Tablet computer seems to be the way forwards this year with the launch of the JooJoo, iPad and mention of many other devices that will be landing in stores later this year.

Another one to mention is more unique than the others in that it has dual-screens. The Kno dual-screen tablet was on show at D8 and is, lets say, quite large. Each screen measures 14.1 inches and the displays used are IPS displays that have a resolution (each) of 1440 x 900 pixels. It weighs 5.5 pounds and has around six to eight hours of battery life.

Pen and touch support will be included with the final model and the stylus will be included when buying it. Powering the dual screen beast is a Tegra 2 chip. 16GB of storage can be found inside. [Read more…]

Amazon Kindle 2.5 Update Delayed by a Few Weeks

Recently Amazon [AMZN] pushed out the 2.5 update for the Kindle to a number of users for testing purposes. Based feedback from the select few, developers at Amazon are now making changes to the code in preparation for launch.

This has pushed the update back by a few weeks although Amazon do say it is still going ahead. Amazon say that the update will be pushed out to more users which could mean it’s a second round of testing before the final version launches.

No official release date has been provided yet, but it’s good to see the company being open with Kindle users and letting them know exactly what’s happening and what is to be expected. A list of upcoming enhancements can be seen below. [Read more…]

HP Not Interested in Smartphones with Palm Purchase

We suspected all along that the reason HP [HPQ] purchased Palm [PALM] was more to do with webOS than it was the Pre or Pixi although we had hoped to see a bit of a push in the webOS smartphone arena. HP has confirmed that smartphones are not the reason it purchased Palm though. The information comes from the HP CEO Mark Hurd who said…

We didn’t buy Palm to be in the smartphone business. And I tell people that, but it doesn’t seem to resonate well. We bought it for the IP. The WebOS is one of the two ground-up pieces of software that is built as a web operating environment¦We have tens of millions of HP small form factor web-connected devices¦Now imagine that being a web-connected environment where now you can get a common look and feel and a common set of services laid against that environment. That is a very value proposition.

Microsoft Windows Embedded Compact 7 Trial Download Available

Microsoft [MSFT] unveiled Windows Embedded Compact 7 earlier today. The new operating system is being designed to function on devices that sit between smartphones and desktop PC’s, ie Tablet computers and low powered netbooks/laptops.

It seems Microsoft has created Windows Embedded Compact 7 because Windows Phone 7 Series isn’t quite enough for a larger screened tablet, and that Windows 7 it’s self is just a bit too much for a tablet to need both in features and performance wise.

Microsoft has created a website explaining exactly what the new OS is and how it can be integrated in to the devices we use. The company is also offering a free trial download so you can see what it’s about yourself before they launch it in the near future. [Read more…]

LEGO Felt Tip 110 Printer Actually Works

Check out this cool printer. It is built of LEGO and uses a felt tip pen to print on standard paper.

The kit cannot be purchased in a standard kit, ie, it’s not LEGO mindstorms controlling the system. Instead the creator managed to design, build and code it all from scratch using analog motor electronics along with sensors and a printer driver. The LEGO printer connects up to a Mac using a USB interface.

When using the printer it looks to work like a standard printer on a Mac in that when you instruct a document to be printed, you can select the LEGO Felt Tip 110 printer from the drop down menu. [Read more…]

Samsung Wave S8500 in Germany Contains a Virus on Mem Card

The Samsung Wave S8500 started shipping recently in Germany and those who purchased it could be in for a surprise as it is believed many of the devices have been infected with a virus. The virus is on the microSD memory card that ships with the smartphone and it contains the Win32/Heur virus that effects computers that use autorun.

It isn’t known how the virus got there although we suspect that it was put there in the factory when the memory cards were perhaps tested. Maybe one of the machines used to test cards contained a virus, or perhaps they were purposely planted on there by someone. [Read more…]

Google Android Updates Could Slow to One a Year

If you follow the progress Google [GOOG] has made with the Google Android OS, you will notice that they release updates quite often. Many smartphones are about to get an update to Android 2.1 although Android 2.2 is due out any week now. Also many are still on 1.5 and 1.6 with a few on 2.0. In total, eight releases were made in the first 18 months.

All this fragmentation has happened due to the quick updates that Google has made and now it seems that they are now beginning to slow down over the next few months.

Andy Rubin from Google said that the slow down would bring it down to about two updates per year and eventually on to just one update per year which basically follows in line with what Apple pretty much do. [Read more…]
