LuminAR Robotic Pico Projector Display

LuminAR is a robot that has a small pico-projector attached. The device is capable of moving automatically around your desk space and can project images on to your desk, wall or augment information on to magazines or books if desired (or programmed to do so).

The project comes out of MIT and is described in that it… “reinvents the traditional incandescent bulb and desk lamp, evolving them into a new category of robotic, digital information devices”.

The pico-projector part of the robot functions just like a regular lamp in that you can put it in a regular lamp holder. The only difference with doing that is that you don’t get automated robotic movement which might suit some people. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 UK Price – O2 Reveal Tariffs, 1GB Data Limit and no Handset Price Yet

O2 is slowly pushing out information each day ready for the iPhone 4 UK launch. However, we still do not know the iPhone 4 UK price just yet. Good news (or not so good when we go in to more detail) is that the iPhone 4 UK O2 tariffs are now online. The tariffs offered come in 18 or 24 month durations with the 24 month cheapest plan being £25/month. For that you get 100 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data.

The higher end 18 and 24 month contracts see you paying up to £65/month (18 month) or £60/month (24 month) but each of those plans restricts you to just 1GB of data per month although you do get unlimited minutes and texts out of that plan. [Read more…]

Logitech Vid Allows HD 720p Video Calling

The Logitech Vid software is getting an update that will allow you to make calls with 720p HD webcams. As well as updating the software, Logitech is also launching four new HD wecams that will work with the Vid software.

Three of the cameras are capable of 720p while the top of the range camera is capable of 1080p although the software for video calls restricts that to 720p (although local recording can be done at Full HD).

The first of the cameras is the Logitech HD Pro C910. This camera costs $100 and is the top end of the cameras capable of 720p video calls and 1080p local recording. A dual-mic setup is also included that is used in a similar way to the Nexus One in that one detects ambient sound and cuts it out. iPhone 4 Retina Display attacked by Samsung

The Apple iPhone 4 retina display has come under attack from Samsung who argue that quadrupling the resolution of the iPhone screen would have little impact on the quality. Samsung quoted a three to five percent increase in clarity.

Samsung also commented that the IPS screen used by Apple [AAPL] could also drain the battery as much as 30 percent. The Super AMOLED screen used on the Galaxy S is said to be better in that it doesn’t require the battery draining backlight of the IPS screen. The AMOLED screen also has true black and more accurate colours making it look better all around and from all viewing angles.

Although Samsung has attacked Apple on this (of course they would with the launch of the Galaxy S), the AMOLED screen isn’t without it’s flaws either such as problems in daylight and high cost to produce. [Read more…]

Sony 3D TV Launched

Sony has released several new 3D TV’s. The new TVs use shutter glasses to bring the 3D effect in to the living room. Sony has opted to use proprietary high frame rate screens which can provide full HD 3D images.

As with all things 3D at the moment, Sony isn’t letting the 3D TV’s go for cheap. On top of the high price tag you also need to purchase 3D glasses which cost $150 a pair and a 3D sync transmitter that costs $50. The $50 transmitter will be required on all but the high-end TV which has the feature built in.
