iOS 4.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS Incoming

On September 23, a new iOS 4.1 jailbreak will be released for the iPhone 3GS and lower devices. This means that for iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4th gen users, you will still have to wait around for another option.

The jailbreak software is called Sn0wbreeze 2.0 and when available, will allow Windows users to create custom firmware files that prevent the baseband being updated when you upgrade the firmware on the phone. What this in turn does is allows you to use Ultrasn0w to unlock the phone so that it can be used on any carrier you want (or any compatible carrier we should say). [Read more…]

Google [GOOG] is introducing a second level of security to its Gmail services. Right now, you only need a password and email address to log in to the service. The second layer will add a PIN code to the login process.

The service is only available to Google Apps Premier, Education, and Government Editions of the Gmail service at the moment and is not enabled by default. If you are a company admin looking after Gmail for the company you work for, you can enable the services through the admin interface. [Read more…]

Microsoft Mobile Stragegy is Software for Every Platform

Microsoft [MSFT] over the years has branched out down a number of avenues such as creating the Xbox, smartphones and various other bits of hardware.

One thing that it does well is software. As Microsoft hasn’t had success in some areas, think of the Kin, the company is shifting its main focus back to software.

In an interview with the WSJ the following was said…

“We are in the software business and that is where our business will be focused,” he said. That means no follow-ups to the Kin social media smartphone, definitely; no resuscitation of the Courier e-reader/tablet project, probably; and a new focus on making apps for other platforms, quite possibly.

Google Docs Editing Coming to iPad

There’s good news for iPad owners who want the ability to edit Google Docs documents whilst on the move, as Google [GOOG] is releasing Google Docs for the iPad that will allow documents to be edited and perhaps created.

This ability is already available in the web based version, but to be honest, it’s quite bad and jumps in to a basic mode where you need to click edit on each row to edit the data. It’s really not up to scratch and feels clunky and is frustrating to use.

It appears that the application is for the iPad only, but it could also include the iPhone and iPod touch as well at a later date. [Read more…]

BlackBerry Storm 3 Spotted

Some pictures of what is thought to be the BlackBerry Storm 3 were sent in to Berry Review recently. The device looks similar to a BlackBerry Storm 2 which could mean that it has been photoshopped a little. However, RIM often keep similar design elements between phones which could also indicate it’s the real thing.

Technical specs for the device are not known just yet, but it is expected that the Storm 3 will get 8GB of internal memory and that it will have a 3.7 inch touchscreen display.

We also hear rumours that it might have mobile Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity. [Read more…]

Apple Patent Reveals Accessory Transceiver for iPod

Interesting information can be found whilst looking at patents filed. The latest we came across today comes from Apple [AAPL] that reveals plans for an accessory transceiver. The accessory transceiver could be used in the iPod touch which would effectively give it the ability to make phone calls and receive text messages.

It is believed that the device could act like the Peel case we wrote about a while back that you basically put your iPod inside to give it a mobile phone signal.

The device is not intended for just the iPod though and could potentially be used for the iPhone its self. You’re probably wondering at this point, why you’d want to add mobile phone functionality to a mobile phone… well, Apple also indicate that CDMA could be part of the device which would mean you could then use your iPhone on a different network to a GSM network.
