Battery Free Wireless Mouse

Battery Free Wireless Mouse
Wireless mice are great. I used to get so fed up of the wire on the mouse getting trapped behind something. The problem with wireless mice is that occasionally the battery runs out right when you are in the middle of something important and you havent charged up the extra set. This mouse is different and uses induction to power the battery less wireless mouse. It draws power from an electric field generated by the mouse mat which gets its power via the USB connection.

MS Windows XP in your Pocket

Pocket XP
The USB flash drive has become more useful over the years with devices such as the VPhone from Vonage allowing you to carry around a land line which can be loaded up on any computer with internet access. With the rise of memory storage capacity also come other uses such as this Windows backup OS on a flash drive.

Put your self in this situation. You are out on business and you load up some software containing a virus which destroys part of your Windows XP OS. Being out of the road and having no access to the internet on another PC would make it very hard to fix this issue. Having a bootable flash drive running Windows XP would solve this problem for you. Using Bart PE Builder you can create a very handy flash drive with OS and plenty of utilities which could save your laptop a lot quicker then sending it back to the IT dept to fix.

Creative X-Fi Soundcard

Creative X-Fi Soundcard
Creative have created some great soundcards in the past, and this latest called the X-Fi Xtreme is no different. The card plugs in to the ExpressCard slot and allows you to use their Crystallizer and 3CMSS-3D technology. The unit is set to cost $106 and features a 7.1 channel speaker docking module. Making use of the ExpressCard slot is a good use as it does allow simple installation on a laptop which can be removed when not needed. Unfortunatly no tiny speakers exist yet in a 7.1 form for you to cart around with your laptop.

Use your Laptop as a Tablet PC

Tablet PC Conversion
If you dont have the money to buy a tablet PC but want to be able to use those features then this laptop to tablet PC conversion kit might be for you. The device works by attaching it to your laptop screen and then it senses pen movement on the surface of the screen up to a screen size of 14.3 inches. Software is included which allows you to use natural ink input so that emails can be hand written and other applications can be used. I am not fully convinced with this as a tablet PC though as the tablet PCs feature a twist and flip screen which hides the keyboard behind the screen allowing you to hold it in your arm. The only way to do this with a regular laptop would be to keep the screen and keyboard opened as normal. But, I do admit that it does have its uses for those wanting pen based input on their laptop.

HP Pavilion TX1000 Tablet

HP TX1000 Tablet
The HP Pavilion TX1000 is a tablet PC which has some great specs. It boasts 2GB of RAM, an AMD Turion 64×2 dual core processor and an NVidia Graphics card. This is enough power in the tablet to run Vista Ultimate Edition. With it being a tablet PC the screen is on a hinge which swivels 180 degrees allowing you to use the tablet PC as a tablet or a laptop with the full keyboard. The TX1000 makes use of sensors to see which mode you are in and can rotate the screen automatically to suit what you are doing which is a nice feature and a small time saver. The 12.1 inch screen is bright and is also a touch screen as can be expected from a tablet PC as input from a stylus is necessary.

Motion Sensing Devices

Motion sensors or accelerometers are little devices that fit inside electronic devices which allow the device to know when it is moved and which way it is tilted and at what speed it moved. With these sensors a computer or similar device can get a whole new dimension in the way it is controlled. One of the more popular devices to use this technology is the Nintendo Wii. The Wii has a controller which has accelerometers inside and this allows your actions to be converted in to movement on the screen. Take the bowling game for example, you hold down a button, pull your arm back and move your arm forwards as though you were bowling the ball. Twisting your wrist allows for spin to be added to the ball. Accelerometers are cool and becoming more popular in devices.
Nintendo Wii Controller

As well as being in gaming controllers you can find accelerometers in cameras, phones and laptop computers. The iPhone from Apple which is due out soon features a sensor which when the phone is turned on its side the image follows rotating it in to landscape mode. As well as being able to follow the movement there, the phone can also sense when it is lifted up to your ear when on a call and it then switches the screen off to save battery power.

The Apple PowerBook is also another device to feature sensors in allowing for all sorts of different applications to make use of them. Some of the more simple ideas are controls for your music. You tap the laptop to the left to skip back, tap it to the right to jump forwards and tilt it to play.

For such a tiny device the accelerometer is a great device which is appearing more in mobile phones and gaming devices. Although in some cases they do not do much they are still cool little devices which can add a new dimension to your device and well worth looking out for.

SSD Laptops from Dell

Latitude SSD
Solid State Drives have moved forwards over the last year and we are now seeing SSDs which are actually worth looking at for storage solutions. What sets these drives apart from the regular spinning platter is that there are no moving parts, they give out less heat and use less power. All 3 of these are perfect for users on the go as battery power needs to be cut back as much as possible to squeeze the most amount of usage out of one charge.

Dell is one company who have latched on to the idea and now have laptops with SSD. The SSD laptop will be introduced in the Ultramobile Latitude D420 and also the semi-rugged D620 ATG laptops. The SSDs in these will be 32GB versions which are just 1.8 inches in size. The drives are from SanDisk. To select this option when buying the laptop, it will set you back around $549. This is a little higher then the off the shelf price of $350, but cheaper then other vendors who are commanding $700 for the same device. [Read more…]
