Windoro the Window Cleaner

In the past we’ve written about robots that mow your lawn or guard your house while you’re away. You’d think by now, in 2010, that some bright sparks could get something to clean your windows without you too…

Well now they have, for the South Korea Pohang Institute of Intelligent Robotics or ‘PIRO’ (as we’ll call them for the remainder of this post) has done just that and have brought us Windoro the window cleaner.

Droid X Android 2.2 Update Causing Music and Ringtone Issues

The Android 2.2 update for Motorola DROID X users went live recently. However, since the roll out it appears that some users are having problems with music and ringtones on the Droid X.

It seems like its a small set of users experiencing the problem rather than a high percentage. Right now Verizon has only said that they are looking in to it when asked.

As its a small percentage, we assume that most users are having no problems at all with the update and that all things went swimmingly. [Read more…]

Nokia to Use Windows Phone 7 – Rumour

You need to have a pinch of salt type mind set when you read this rumour. We hear today that Nokia is looking in to using Windows Phone 7 on some of its smartphones in the near future. The information supposedly comes from Stephen Elop, the new CEO of Nokia, who wants the company to investigate alternative operating systems to use on handsets.

A while back, a similar rumour spread about the possibility of Nokia using Google Android. This was denied and hasn’t happened yet. We are inclined to think that this rumour is just the same and that Nokia will continue to work the same way as they have been for a long time. [Read more…]

The CEO noted that Verizon values data differently to its competition. This doesn’t really make it clear if Verizon will become more expensive or cheaper than AT&T on a per MB calculation. [Read more…]

Facebook Down for 2.5 Hours Last Night – Details Explained

Yesterday, Facebook went down for 2.5 hours. Normally this kind of news wouldn’t be covered here as it’s not that interesting. However, as it’s Facebook that has a good number of servers and infrastructure handling the millions/billions of requests per day we thought we’d mention what actually happened.

When a website goes down, like gadgetvenue for example, you just restart a service, quickly find out what happened, fix a script and off it goes again.

When Facebook went down, it was because of a problem with a script. Basically the problem was described as “an unfortunate handling of an error condition. An automated system for verifying configuration values ended up causing much more damage than it fixed.” [Read more…]
