3M are launching a new multitouch screen that measures 22 inches and is capable of capturing input from up to 10 fingers. The screen is called the M2256PW and runs at a high-definition resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels. The new LCD screen is aimed at professionals and professional consumers who are looking for true multi-touch compatibility.

Utilizing this new technology, software developers are able to revolutionize the way users interact with all types of information and to expand traditional touch interaction to include multiple users and increase collaboration. “Consumers and prosumers have come to expect multi-touch functionality in their everyday electronic devices”, Tsourides says. “The release of the M2256PW display provides a technological leap in multi-touch interactivity, surpassing traditional two-finger multi-touch by providing full, 10-finger multi-touch capability.”

Pioneer AVIC X920BT In-Car Sat Nav System

The Pioneer AVIC X920BT is an in-car satnav system designed for a double-DIN slot. It has a large 6.1 inch screen that has a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels and is touch-screen too. Above the screen a slot loading CD drive can be found next to a microSD slot I guess for using a card full of MP3 audio files to play while on the move.

Down the left of the large screen all the controls can be found that includes volume, home, mode and track selections for the audio. The navigation part of the system I assume at this point is all touch-screen based. [Read more…]

Lenovo Lephone on Show at CES

Lenovo have created an Android OS based phone called Lephone. The Android operating system on the Lephone has been through a complete facelift and according to MobileCrunch the phone has hardly any of the original OS sticking out.

It is expected that the phone will run Android 2.0 when launched although Lenovo declined to comment on which version of Android would be in there.

The screen on the Lephone is very impressive at 3.7 inches with a nice resolution of 800 x 480. The screen is also OLED. There appears to be no physical buttons on the face of the phone with just volume buttons on the left and a programmable button on the right of the phone. The bottom area below the screen is touch-sensitive allowing for soft keys as well as gestures to be input. [Read more…]

Samsung 3D Paper Thin OLED Display

Samsung have a small 14 inch 3D screen on show at CES this year that measures just 1.6mm thin. It’s odd to think a TV this thin can actually be built. As with all ultra thin TV’s that we have seen recently, this Samsung prototype also features a pedestal stand where the bulk of the electronics are stored to keep as much away from the back of the panel as needed.

The screen it’s self is capable of showing 3D images. Unfortunately it’s about 3 years away from being mass produced due to the costs involved in having anything big enough to fit in the living room at a decent price, but as all technology continues to drop in price we’ll sometime in the next few years see screens this thin in stores at today’s thicker TV prices. Samsung Announce New Digital Cameras at CES

Samsung have launched a new line of digital cameras at CES this year.

The first new set of cameras are the Samsung TL-Series that feature two screens. The second screen on these two cameras is forward facing allowing you to take self portrait shots without missing yourself. The second screen measures 1.5 inches and sits to the left of the lens of the camera. The two cameras are called the Samsung TL210 and the Samsung TL205. The TL210 is the slightly improved camera that has a 12.4 megapixel sensor vs the TL205 that has a 12.2 megapixel sensor. The TL2010 also has better optics allowing for 5x optical zoom where as the TL205 has 3x optical zoom. The former also has a wider angle lens at 27mm vs the 35mm lens of the latter camera. Samsung Laptop has Transparent OLED Screen

At CES, Samsung unveiled a laptop that has a transparent OLED screen that can let up to 40% light through it from the background. Although it might not be fully practical in a laptop design a transparent OLED screen has applications elsewhere such as being embedded on to the wind-shield of your car allowing navigation to be overlayed on to the road ahead.

The current maximum transparency on other screens is only 25%, so bumping that up to 40% by Samsung is a good achievement. [Read more…]

HP Slate Revealed at CES

At the Microsoft [MSFT] keynote at CES, Steve Ballmer showed off the new HP Slate that will be launching later this year. Not much information was provided about it although it was seen running the PC Kindle app. The HP Slate is Windows based (I assume Windows 7) and features multitouch.

Gaming can be done on the Slate but the only game shown on the demo was Frogger which isn’t really an intensive app.

The front of the devices houses the screen that looks to be somewhere between the 9 and 11 inch range along with a border around it. There are no buttons on the front of the HP Slate. Around the sides there are a few buttons which I assume are to wake it up, switch wireless on as well as changing the volume, but as this is currently a prototype this could potentially change. New Nintendo DS to Feature Motion Control

It seems like Nintendo are creating a new Nintendo DS handheld gaming system that will have upgraded graphics as well as motion sensing technology.

Improving graphics is generally a step forwards for console makers, so adding better graphics to the DS 2 does make sense. I’m yet to be convinced of motion control on a handheld though although Nintendo have done well with the Wii and DS, so seem to know what they are doing in general. [Read more…]

Ultra-Thin LG LEF TV On Display at CES

CrunchGear spotted an ultra-thin TV at CES called the LG LEF. Unfortunately nobody knew anything about it, not even the LG reps. The most they could offer was that it landed in Vegas straight out of Korea.

The TV measures about 1/4 of an inch in thickness making it very slim. The main functions of the TV are held in the block base that supports the TV with the screen and backlight being housed in glass alone which allows for the ultra-thin TV to be just that… ultra-thin. [Read more…]
