Android Developer Challenge 2 Results

android_adcStarting August 1st this year, Google opened up an Android Developer challenge to see who could come up with the best application. After a few months of developing the results are now in with the winners announced.

The winners of the Android Developer Challenge 2 are firstly an application called SweetDreams that allows you to automatically change your settings to aviod calls at night.

Next is the “What the Doodle!?” application that functions as a real-time online multiplayer game. The idea behind the game is that one player draws out a given phrase and other connected need to guess what is drawn.

Finally in the winners area is WaveSecure that protects the data and privacy of your Android based phone. The application allows you to track the location of your phone, track who is using it. Other features in WaveSecure allow you to remotely lock down your phone as well as back up data, remote wipe your phone and restore data. [Read more…]

Zii Trinity 1080p Android Smartphone

Zii-TrinityThe Zii StemCell processor is described as being a system-on-a-chip that runs on an ARM Cortex Chip. The system was designed to power gadgets such as mobile phones along with PMP’s and settop boxes.

Information on a new Zii powered smartphone has been revealed that runs the Android OS. The smartphone is called the Zii Trinity and runs a 1GHz processor and has support for 3D graphics along with a 1080p HDMI output port.

The Zii Trinity has a 3.1 inch multi touch OLED screen that can display a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. Hardware support is used for the 3D graphics and support for OpenGL 2.0 accelerated gaming is also available. [Read more…]

The Crunch Pad is Dead

crunch-pad-finalOver the last year we have heard a number of details about the Crunch Pad that showed a 12 inch tablet device designed to browse the web only while sitting on the couch.

A couple of weeks ago, TechCrunch were about to launch previews of the Crunch Pad running both Windows 7 and Chrome OS to show how it could be used and how easily it integrated with other operating systems. MSI Wind U230 Launched

MSI-Wind-U230MSI have launched a new notebook computer called the MSI Wind U230. The MSI U230 has a 12.1 inch LCD display that can display 1366 x 768 pixels. Powering the notebook is an AMD Congo MV40 processor. For RAM you have the option of up to 4GB of DDR2.

Storage wise the notebook comes with a selection of 160GB, 250GB and 320GB depending on the model you choose. Connectivity see’s the netbook connect at 802.11b/g/n and an Ethernet port is built in capable of speeds up to 1GBps. iXP3 Internet Messaging Clock

ixp3_internet_messaging_clock_ondeskThe iXP3 Internet Messaging Clock is a gadget you can put on your office desk. It features a swinging arm that has red LED’s on it. When waved back and forth fast, it gives the illusion of floating text in the air which is used to display messages.

A port in the back allows you to connect it to a router. The port is a standard RJ45 socket that allows Ethernet to be run direct from the router to the clock and make it internet connected.

Buffalo Announce a USB 3.0 12X Blu-Ray Burner

Buffalo have just announced that they are launching a 12x Blu-Ray burner that also has USB 3.0 connectivity. The burner is called the BR-X1216U3 and does support USB 2.0 for those who haven’t upgraded their motherboards or controllers to support USB 3.0. However, when using the slower 2.0 transfer speeds you are restricted to a 7x burn for Blu-Ray discs.

Currently the Buffalo 12x burner is only compatible with Windows based machines (XP/Vista or 7). [Read more…]

Compaq CQ61 hits Orange UK

Compaq-cq61As well as introducing the ASUS Eee 1005HGO netbook on to their network, Orange also are offering the Compaq CQ61 notebook along with a dongle for mobile web browsing.

The Compaq CQ61 notebook is available with a number of data plans ranging from 18 to 24 months. However, unlike the Asus 1005HGO, most plans need you to pay a fee up front to get this notebook. Prices start at £29.36 on a 1GB 18 month contract, but you will need to pay £130 for the notebook. If you pay about £35/month on a 24 month contract then you can get the notebook for free. ASUS EEE 1005HGO with Embedded SIM hits Orange UK

ASUS-EEE-1005HGOOrange have announced that it will be shipping the ASUS Eee 1005HGO netbook along with an embedded SIM card for on the move broadband access. The netbook will come with the Windows 7 operating system installed.

The ASUS EEE 1005HGO weighs 1.27KG, has a 10.1 inch screen and will run the Windows 7 Starter operating system.

The netbook is available on both 18 and 24 month contracts with prices ranging from £29.36 (1GB plan) through £40 / month. Data included with the price plans varies from 1GB to 3GB and up to 5GB. Kingjim Pomera Note Taking Gadget

Pomera_DM20_1This gadget falls in to the category of crazy gadgets due to me not quite understanding why it’s really needed. The Kingjim Pomera is a note taking device that has a full sized keyboard along with a 5 inch VGA screen. What it does is allows you to take notes and send emails if connected to a mobile phone.

The strange thing is that if you need a mobile phone to connect it to, then why bother with the screen on the device… perhaps a bluetooth keyboard for your current smartphone with an application installed could achieve the same goal. That aside, it looks easy to type on and for basic notepad it appears to do it’s job well. [Read more…]
