iPhone OS 4.0 Jailbreak

Within hours of iPhone OS 4 being made available to developers for download it appears that someone has already managed to jailbreak the new OS. This was achieved by MuscleNerd who is from the iPhone Dev Team.

A video has also been uploaded to YouTube showing Cydia running on the new operating system. Details of how to perform the jailbreak I suspect will be kept secret until the iPhone OS 4.0 release date which we have now as just sometime in the summer.

MuscleNerd also comments that the new developer release of OS 4 is quite buggy and recommends it not be installed yet unless you want to test it’s features out. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone OS 4.0 Hands-On

Engadget managed to get OS 4.0 installed on their iPhone 3GS to test what all the new features are like. Overall it looks very impressive and although not the final version of the OS, it seems to run smoothly without any issues at the moment.

Engadget demonstrate all the new features such as multitasking, folders, mail, the camera and various other functions. Some things worth noting are that the camera now has zoom. Zooming the camera unfortunately doesn’t use pinch to zoom, but the slider is more responsive than any other mobile phone zoom slider we have ever seen – ie, it has no delay to the zoom when dragging in and out.

The folders function seems to work very well in that you can easily create a new folder, give it a name and simply press and hold to grab an app and drop it in (or out) of the folder you created. Once done, a mini icon appears in the folder icon to show you how many apps are in there and perhaps, which apps are in there if the mini icon is clear enough). [Read more…]

iPhone OS 4.0 Release Date

Update: Apple has just announced that iPhone OS 4.0 (which has been renamed to iOS 4) will be launched on June 21. Click here for details.

Earlier today Apple [AAPL] announced iPhone OS 4. In the presentation they said the iPhone OS 4.0 release date was to be summer while the Apple iPad will get it in the fall, a few months later.

Reasons for the iPad delay are still unknown although we suspect they are tweaking iPhone OS 4.0 for the iPad to work things a little differently such as how the multitasking tray works.

With Apple only specifying summer as the iPhone OS 4.0 release date, that obviously puts it somewhere in June, July or August. We currently believe that the next gen iPhone (aka iPhone 4G or iPhone HD) is going to be announced early in summer, so we suspect that the iPhone OS 4.0 will be released along with the next gen iPhone. iPhone OS 4 Multitasking in Action

We just mentioned iPhone OS 4 and it’s new features that Apple [AAPL] announced today.

We just came across a video showing exactly how multitasking works on the iPhone. The video is below and shows the double tap on the home button where the running apps then slide up from the bottom of the screen. The option of sliding left and right is then given allowing you to choose which application you want to load.

Although it’s not the most ground breaking feature to hit a mobile phone, praise seems to need to go to Apple due to how they say it functions in that it doesn’t cause issues with the CPU or with memory limits from what we understand. Steve Jobs best described multitasking as follows… “It’s like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager… they blew it. Users shouldn’t ever have to think about it.” [Read more…]

Apple iPhone OS 4 – Multitasking Official

Today, Apple [AAPL] announced iPhone OS 4 and along with that, the ability it brings to the iPhone 3GS to multitask. Note that we say iPhone 3GS as the older iPhone 3G and below will not support multitasking. Also OS 4 will work on the 3rd gen iPod Touch (ie, late 2009 models).

Another interesting step for Apple here is that they are delaying iPhone OS 4 for iPad owners till fall rather than when the rest of the Apple products will get it in the summer. We are not sure the reasons for this but if we find out, we’ll provide an update.

Before we mention all the new features of iPhone OS 4, we thought we’d also mention that 450,000 Apple iPads have shipped since it’s launch last week. That’s quite a success. [Read more…]

Vopium VoIP Apple iPhone App Enabled 3G VoIP Calling

Vopium have updated their iPhone application to version 1.6 that now allows VoIP calls to be routed over 3G connections on the Apple iPhone.

As well as being able to make VoIP calls over Wi-Fi and 3G networks, the software also allows IM contact with users of Skype, GTalk, MSN, Yahoo, AIM and ICQ.

Currently the app is for iPhone only although they do say an iPad app is pending approval at the app store and if approved will be ready for download soon. The iPad version of Vopium works on either Wi-fi or 3G connections and allows VoIP calls, SMS and IM messages to be sent. [Read more…]

Apple iPad SNES4iPhone Emulator Looks Great

When the iPad was launched this past weekend, one user decided to install the iPhone version of SNES4iPhone that is compatible with non-jailbroken devices. The app loaded right up and was set to run at 2X magnification along with smooth scaling in the SNES4iPhone emulator. When up and running the Super Mario Kart game was tested and results show it to look fantastic.

The video below shows the game in action. Scrolling looks smooth and the larger screen makes the game very playable. Unfortunately the SNES emulator is now available for download just yet, although we hope it will be soon.

Video can be found after the break… [Read more…]

Apple iPhone wanted by Verizon CEO – No Confirmation if they will get it

The CEO of Verizon [VZ] has commented that his network wants the Apple iPhone.

Normally Ivan Seidenberg avoids iPhone related questions, but this time around he is quite open in that he has said…

“we’re open to getting the device,”and that “our network is capable of handling it.”

However, what wasn’t said is if confirmation from Apple [AAPL] has arrived about them actually getting it. Just a couple of weeks ago we found out that two iPhones were being built with one being a new model (either the iPhone HD or iPhone 4G – it’s rumoured names), we then heard a CDMA model was being created which could potentially be going to Verizon. Skype for iPhone gets an update – Still no 3G Calling

The latest version of Skype for the Apple iPhone has been released. The new version is numbered 1.3.1 and unfortunately does not add 3G calling to the VoIP software.

Skype first announced that it would open up for 3G calling back in February, so it was expected with the 1.3.1 update that this would happen, unfortunately it didn’t.

The update that was launched today instead just fixed a number of bugs in the software that had been reported. [Read more…]

Windows Phone 7 Series Apple iPhone Theme in the Works

The Windows Phone 7 Series theme for the Apple iPhone [AAPL] is something you don’t expect to see every day. However, this has been done. A user called woocash-kun found over here has created a theme that runs on his iPhone.

The downside is that the theme hasn’t been release yet along with instructions on how to install it. If he does release it you’ll need to jailbreak your phone to install it.

What you will get in the theme is the home page for Windows Phone 7 Series that you can easily scroll down. Along with that a second page with smaller icons is also included. Right now some of it doesn’t work such as the status bar although there is a very good lock screen clone for those of you who prefer the WM7S version. [Read more…]

Smart Car gets Smartest Apple iPhone App

We don’t normally cover information about cars here at gadgetvenue, but for this new Apple iPhone app we thought it was worth a mention due to it being an in-car app for the iPhone.

The application is called Smartest and it’s a dock and application that integrates with your Smartcar. The application has been designed to be used in a car and thus, the icons are larger as well as the text larger and less clutter is to be found on the screen to avoid distracting the driver.

Functions include the ability to play your music over the cars internal radio. The application integrates with the music found on your iPhone and lets you browse through it to play it back in the car. It makes for a good music player. Another interesting application built in is internet radio that lets you stream music from radio stations around the globe to your iPhone and in turn, this is output to the speakers on the car. Apple iPhone OS 4.x might get Expose-like Interface for Multi-tasking

We have heard a few times before that Apple [AAPL] are intending on allowing multitasking on their iPhone 4.0 OS upgrade which will perhaps, show up with the Apple iPhone HD (aka iPhone 4G).

AppleInsider managed to get hold of details that indicate that the iPhone multitasking of 3rd part apps will function in a similar way to Expose on the Mac.

Those familiar with the design of iPhone 4.0 said that the user interface will resemble Apple’s desktop Expose feature, in that a key combination — reportedly hitting the Home button twice — will trigger an expose-like interface that brings up a series of icons representing the currently running apps, allowing users to quickly select the one they want to switch to directly. When a selection is made, the iPhone OS zooms out of the Expose task manager and transitions to that app.
