Sensorly App Maps Mobile Phone Signal Quality

When planning a trip out for a few days break you might be the sort who wonders if there will be a mobile phone signal available so you can check your work emails, personal emails and browse the web. If that description fits you then a new application could be the answer to finding honest coverage maps of various areas. A typical way of getting this data is to look on your phone carriers website and look at the coverage maps, however, they tend to be a little out sometimes.

A company called Sensorly has created the Sensorly app that users can install on their phone. When enabled the phone sends data back to the company who can then compile data from your signal strength information in areas you pass through. By collecting data from a number of phones, Sensorly aim to provide even more accurate coverage maps that will allow it to become more accurate than the carriers data. [Read more…]

T-Mobile US HTC HD2 to get More RAM/ROM?

The HTC HD2 came with 512MB of flash ROM which doesn’t help the device run as smoothly as it potentially could. This morning it was spotted that the T-Mobile version of the HTC HD2 in the US would actually come supplied with 1GB of ROM and an extra 128MB of RAM.

It is unclear at the moment why the T-Mobile version will have more memory but some are saying it is to do with the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 launch which has the bar set at 1GB for the minimum spec. If this is the case and there is a 1GB minimum WM7 spec then does this mean the US T-Mob version of the HD2 is the only one out of the range that will get the WM7 upgrade? It’s hard to say at the moment until official announcements are made. [Read more…]

TomTom’s IQ Routes Reveal US Aren’t Speeding

TomTom uses a system called IQ Routes that uses real time and historical data to calculate the optimal route to your destination. By recording speeds of traffic at all times of the day the system knows which roads are slow and which route will get you to your destination the quickest. Two years worth of data has been collected with average speeds being calculated on free flowing highways in the US and the data reveals that people in the US don’t speed in general.

The report found that in some cases, speed limits were exceeded but in general the average speed was below the limits imposed on the roads tracked. Although we mentioned IQ Routes in the title of this post and the post it’s self, the data is actually calculated using data from Speed Profiles who provide the historical database to TomTom and integrated as IQ Routes. The data is collected anonymously from GPS units sat in cars that are connected up via a mobile phone’s data plan so real time information can be collected. [Read more…]
