More Fuel Cell Stuff – The UltraCell XX25

UltraCell XX25 information has been revealed recently by GizMag. The claim is that the Fuel Cell can power a ruggedized laptop for 3 days and with a few tweaks it can run survailence computers for longer. The XX25 has been tested to military spec standards from heavy vibrations, extreme weather temperatures etc…

What I like about FuelCell technology is that you can replace the cartridges quickly for cheap and have instant power again. FuelCells are going to be a great way forwards.

Toshiba 0.85-inch 4GB HDD

Toshiba have made this amazing 0.85-inch 4GB HDD. Looking at the pictures below you will be amazed at how something so small can be made.

The drive is slightly larger then a stamp and would be ideal for cameras, phones, MP3 players as well as card readers where transporting data around would be made far easier. I can see this device from Toshiba doing really well!

Pico Flyer

The PicoFlyer is the worlds smallest functional RC helicopter. It’s rotors are 60mm in diameter and the helicopter can fly for around 3 minutes. Looking at the screen shots it reminds me of the insides of a tiny RC car (the Tomy ones) and from what I can tell it’s made of 3 motors (2 for the rotors and 1 for the rear rotor) and charges just like the BitChargE cars.

More Pictures can be found here.

Absolutely stable without the use of any gyros or autopilots

There are no servos, actuators, rods, links, gears or other moving part

The whole helicopter is operated and controlled by 3 electric motors

Forward flight is achieved by tilting the helicopter with the tail propeller

The rotor blades are encircled by a ring that supports and protects them

It is very efficient, all the power is used to generate lift

It is silent, the mechanical drives and the rotors generate very little noise

There are no vibrations

It is safe

  • Fuel Cells… The way forwards?

Fuel Cells seem to be in the news more often these days. They are set to become the replacement for the laptop battery for 1 example. Currently they are bulky and a little too large to be convenient for laptop users… but no doubt in a years time they will shrink them in size and manage to get fuel cells in to the laptop instead of being a huge bolt on like the picture below. Some of the main brands around the world are building these trying to come up with the ideal power source. Tosiba (photo below), and Casio are both running in this game. Casio stated back in 2002 they wanted to use Fuel Cell technology to power laptops for around 20 hours at a time.

    Toshiba Fuel Cell

Instead of storing power, fuel cells generate electricity by breaking down methanol via an electrochemical process. In the Toshiba version there is a compartment to put the methanol cartridge in (looks like a printer cartridge) and this gives instant power at the push of a button. Great for long journeys… no charging is needed. Just fill up the cell and away you go. Toshiba say the cell will give around 10 hours of power to a laptop.

Toshiba already are in talks with companies to shrink down some of the components needed like the pump and other parts. They want to get this out with in the year to a more acceptable size and with the goal in mind of putting the fuel cell where the battery goes for ultimate portability.

    Zero Gravity Wall Climber

It’s tempting 🙂 I want one of these… not for any real reason appart from they look like a good laugh to watch.

This is the wall climbing Hummer!!!
    Hummer
What you do is just drive up to a wall… and continue driving. The Hummber then carries on but going upwards instead of across the floor.

    p1340ex6.jpg

So how does it work? It’s basically a remote control vacuum cleaner. The Hummer sucks air in which pins it to the wall.

These are available now from Firebox.com and cost arouind £80 in the UK. Check out the video they have on their site by clicking the link to firebox.com and scrolling to the bottom of the page.

BT to install Broadband to UK Cities. Cheap VOIP maybe??

BT have announced that they are to install wifi networks and broadband connections in several major cities in the UK. These are Leeds, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and London’s Westminster area. As with most business decisions, this decision aims to boost revenue and push mobile device sales and use in the future. The implementation of the networks will be done in stages with an initial 12 cities piloting the scheme. According to BT,they are already in discussion with other places to install their blanket network, so watch this space for this being available near you.

BT Fusion may be made compatible with this new service allowing cheaper calls from a mobile network while connected to a wifi hotspot. The current BT Fusion works over Blue Tooth when in range of your home or office.

Other firms such as The Cloud are already operating in a few cities across the UK.

It will be interesting to see exactly how much is charged for this service. From past experience, wifi has been a tad on the expensive side. We will have to wait and see!

Current prices for Wi-Fi access on contract is £6.99/Month for a single device or £9.99/Month for multiple devices. (Updated July 2008)
