iPhone 5 part with NFC chip spotted

I’ve mentioned before that I think Apple could add another unique feature to the iPhone 5 and that it might be NFC. My reasons for thinking this were that Apple gave the 4S Siri last year to make it a little more unique. When Apple [AAPL] announced iOS 6 they also announced Passbook which essentially uses the GPS/WiFi to track where you are and when at specific locations it loads up voucher codes, boarding passes and other items for you to have scanned in by a scanner. By adding NFC on the new iPhone, it opens up the possibilities of simply tapping your phone on a sensor (or hovering over it) to make payment or use a pass.

So, what appears next is a new part leak that appears to have some sort of NFC functionality embedded.

ChargeCard Kickstarter project triples its goal with time to spare

Although we didn’t cover the ChargeCard project on KickStarter when it first appears on July 18th… not sure why as it looks amazing! I see today that they have 63 hours to go at the time of writing this and have raised three times more than their goal of $50,000. At the moment they have raised $151,248 funded by 5,173 backers. Impressive numbers! That amount of cash puts them in the top 50 of all KickStarter projects ever funded.

iPad mini rumours heat up thanks to request for more iPad display space

Here in Europe, premium Apple resellers have been asked to provide more display space for the iPad. The request mentions that this work should be complete by September 12. Apple Insider hint that this could mean that the iPad mini will be announced on September 12 and have displays ready for it the same day. Although I’m a little sceptical of an iPad mini launch in September, I can see why Apple would want more space dedicated for a new device.

iPhone 5 release date likely to be September 21

The iPhone 5 release date hasn’t been publicly announced yet, but on the web today I see that September 21 is looking to be the date of launch. The reason this conclusion is so is because Verizon now has a vacation blackout from September 21 till September 30. This usually indicates that a big product launch is coming.

iPad mini expected to have smaller side bezels

More rumours about the iPad mini continue to surface. The latest is that the side bezels (when held in portrait) will be thinner, similar to the iPhone and iPod touch. This will make the device look more like a large iPod touch than an iPad although we believe it will still be classed as an iPad mini.

Photos of iPhone 5 logic board appear online

Some pictures of the iPhone 5 logic board have been uploaded. The images show a slightly different board to that of the iPhone 4/4S. Although these may or may not be actual logic boards that Apple will use, the interesting point to be made is that the screw holes line up perfectly with the leaked casing we have seen several times.

WiFi Plus Cellular option appears in iOS 6 beta 4

Apple is adding a new setting to iOS 6 that will make data connections run a little smoother. The setting is called WiFi Plus Cellular and has the aim of making connections better for situations where WiFi starts to struggle and slow down. When this happens, connections will jump automatically to 3G while the wireless network clears up any congestion.

iOS 6 can scale to 640 x 1136 hinting at a 4 inch screen

Many iPhone users want a larger screen and although Apple has stuck with the standard 3.5 inches on every single iPhone released, there have been hints that they might switch to a 4 inch model. Leaked parts over the past few weeks and months have hinted at a larger screen and now some other evidence, in the way of software, now provides more strength to these rumours.

iPhone 5 nano SIM tray pictured

Apple will likely start using a nano SIM when the iPhone 5 launches. The nano SIM is now an approved standard SIM card which means that Apple will be able to use it in smartphones and other 3G/4G devices. The whole reason for the switch is that it simply saves a little bit more space. With modern day smartphones, companies try to cram in and fill up every mm3 of space. By cutting down on the size of the SIM by a few mms it allows for another small component to be added etc…

New dock connector rolling out to all iOS devices this fall

Out of all the rumours I’ve heard about the new iPhone and an iPad mini launching in the next few months, this particular is quite bold. The claim is that Apple will be changing its whole product line to a new and smaller dock connector. That part we have heard before, but the new rumours say that it will all happen at the same time this fall.
