Most external keyboards for the iPad are designed to help you type faster. Also, they are designed to give you some tactile feedback which is handy for those who cannot, or do not like touchscreen keyboards.

The USB Typewriter for iPad certainly adds some tactile feedback. The USB Typewriter (as demonstrated below on video) actually works and allows you to tap out messages on the iPad. It connects over the 30 pin dock connector via a USB cable and lets you punch away on the keyboard. USB Port Cleaner from Brando

Brando come up with some odd gadgets and this next one joins that category.

The USB Port Cleaner has been designed to clean your USB ports on your laptop, PC, Mac and any other gadget with a regular sized port. The reasons for creating this are for the “need to clean them up occasionally in order for them to continuously conduct electricity efficiently and keep data flowing at the satisfactory speeds.”

The small USB sized gadget simply slots in a USB port and cleans the copper pins that are found in there.

The copper used for electrical contacts in the USB ports of your computer is subject to oxidization. Especially for those who always use their laptops at places near the sea, the problem will occur faster. But of course, no matter where your laptop is used, the problem will still occur. Over time, it’ll cause a film developed over the copper that provides insulating barrier, preventing good electrical contact between the USB port and the connector of the USB device.

SanDisk XBox 360 USB Flash Drive now Available

SanDisk has confirmed that the XBox 360 USB flash drive is now shipping. A couple of capacities are available which include an 8GB model costing $24.99 and a larger 16GB model costing $69.99.

The drives carry the official XBox logo as they were built in a partnership with Microsoft [MSFT] and each drive can be used to take advantage of the firmware that was launched on April 6 that allowed external devices to be used to store saved games, profiles as well as demos, video and pictures.

Although SanDisk and Microsoft are saying the SanDisk flash drive is the “official” USB device for the XBox, this doesn’t prevent other 3rd party flash drives being used. [Read more…]

ASUS Eee PC 1018P with USB 3.0 Measures 18mm thick

The ASUS Eee PC 1018P was first reported back towards the end of February along with two other models, the 1015p and 1016p. Since then we haven’t heard much until now where some, what are believed to be exclusive, pictures have been captured.

The pictures show off the ASUS 1018p model. This particular model will run either Intel N455 or N475 processors, have Bluetooth connectivity and USB 3.0 connectivity too along with 10 hours of battery life. Recently, ASUS made the decision to embrace the USB 3.0 standard by including the port on all products. The 1018p is amongst the first to receive the USB 3.0 port as standard. The USB 3.0 ports can be seen on the right side of the netbook (pictured below) and are in the usual bright blue colour that indicates the USB 3.0 connectivity. [Read more…]

When we see the name Thanko USB we often wonder what the next USB delight will be that that bring. The company are well known for their crazy gadgets.

The next Thanko USB gadget we came across is the Thanko USB Alarm designed for laptops and notebooks. The idea behind it is that you plug the gadget in to your laptop/notebook and when away from your desk it protects your laptop from being swiped.

Scosche Dual USB Charger for iPad

If you purchased an Apple iPad this month you might have noticed that USB charging can be a bit hit and miss on some laptops and computers. This is due to the power requirements of the Apple iPad being a little too high for what a regular USB port can output.

The requirement that the iPad has is that at least 10 watts are needed from the port. Most USB 2.0 ports are below this causing the iPad not to charge when connected to your PC. This isn’t a huge problem though as it does come with a wall adapter allowing you to charge it that way.

The Scosche Dual USB charger has a couple of different USB ports on with one of them being designed specifically to provide enough power output to charge an iPad. This gadget is part of the Revive II line that comes with an AC adapter for usage in the home as well as a car adapter to charge while on the move. [Read more…]

SNES Controller Gets Modded to Include Accelerometer and USB

Hack a Day have managed to mod a SNES controller to include USB support and accelerometer support. This was achieved by using a Teensy USB development board along with a 3D accelerometer which were both crammed inside the SNES controller.

The Teensy board is used to allow the controller to connect to a PC via USB, but can also read signals from the 3D accelerometer and pass them back to the computer. The buttons are translated to key presses on the keyboard and the movements translated to mouse movements allowing the controller to be used to navigate around games such as Portal.

Other uses of the modified SNES controller could include support for more games and the creator also says it could be used to brute-force passwords if movement is translated in to various keystroke inputs. [Read more…]

PQI unveil Worlds First USB 3.0 2.5 inch Portable Hard Drive

PQI have released the first ever 2.5 inch portable harddrive that works over USB 3.0. The drive is called the PQI H566 and theoretically can reach speeds of up to 5Gbps making it ten times faster than a USB 2.0 hard drive.

The drive it’s self is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 connections allowing you to use it now on a regular USB 2.0 computer, but should you upgrade your PC in the future to one with USB 3.0 support you’ll then get the full benefit.

For design, the casing comes in metallic silver. The drive it’s self comes in three capacities of 320GB, 500GB or 640GB depending on what model you choose. [Read more…]

USB Mass Storage Support on XBox 360 Coming April

Microsoft [MSFT] are releasing a firmware update for the XBox 360 on April 6 that will bring mass storage support on USB drives. This move will allow saved game date to be stored on a USB flash drive as well as other data including demos, profiles and more.

Once the firmware update is applied you need to visit the memory section of the menu system and configure the XBox to accept USB flash drives at that point. When inserting the drive a quick integrity check will be performed to ensure the flash drive is up to scratch and once done it will be ready for storing your saved data.

USB memory sticks up to 16GB in capacity can be used on the XBox 360. Well, I should say the XBox 360 will only take the first 16GB leaving the rest of the space to be used on your PC or Mac. [Read more…]

ASUS Eee Netbooks to get USB 3.0 as Standard

ASUS [2357] have announced that they are pushing USB 3.0 in a big way by including the standard on each and every Eee PC that they make from now on. As well as creating Eee PC USB 3.0 netbooks the company will also include USB 3.0 ports on ASUS PC’s and the Eee Box devices.

This move will help bring the new USB 3.0 faster standard in to mainstream although it could be a while till hard drives and other hardware can keep up with those speeds.

“Asustek also claimed that the PLX high-speed transmission chip that the company adopts on its motherboard can boost the transmission speed of its USB 3.0 technology to 74.38% faster than its competitors.”
