Apple iPad Controlls a Toy Blimp

Although the Apple iPad has a number of limitations such as the lack of flash, no camera and a few other things, it still doesn’t prevent users from getting a little creative with the device.

In this case a company called BREAKFAST who is based in New York, has managed to create a small blimp that carries a wireless video camera and remote control features that the Apple iPad can hook up to.

The camera is accompanied by a couple of bright LEDs to light up the way and the video feed is wirelessly transmitted back to the iPad so the user can fly around by looking at the screen if needed. To control the blimp you simply rotate the iPad like a steering wheel and the fans are adjusted to push it in the direction you want it to go. [Read more…]

Microsoft Kin Two Teardown

iFixit has decided, along with Chipworks, that it was time to teardown a Microsoft Kin Two that recently launched, to see what exactly is inside and what makes it run. We often see the technical specs which includes details of how much RAM, ROM a device has along with what type of processor powers the device and how fast it runs, but generally it stops there. What these teardowns do is let us know all the parts in detail such as what kind of RAM is used, what camera is used and who builds the camera etc…

What we do find out about the Microsoft Kin Two is that is uses a Sony IMX046 camera to capture images and that the camera has an 8.11 megapixel effective resolution. [Read more…]

Omnivision OV2720 1080p Image Sensor

The Omnivision OV2720 is a very small image sensor that is capable of capturing video at 1080p (Full HD) resolutions. The new sensor has been compacted down making it about 1/6 of an inch in size making it ideal for being embedded in to devices such as smartphones, laptops and perhaps the iPad 2.

When recording video in 1080p, the device is capable of capturing up to 30 frames per second. The device also uses a process to achieve better image quality in low light situations which is also a bonus, especially where smartphone cameras are concerned.

Omnivision has said in the past, or at least hinted in the past, that the Apple iphone 4G could get to use the sensor, but due to manufacturing on a mass scale not happening till next month of this sensor, it could be a little late for the next generation iPhone. Instead, Devicemag believe that the OV5650 will be used instead as that sensor is also capable of capturing video at 1080p. [Read more…]

HTC Wildfire Heading to Virgin Mobile UK

Just yesterday a new Android OS smartphone was announced called the HTC Wildfire. The Wildfire is a budget handset that has slightly lower specs than the high end phones such as a slower Qualcomm processor running at 525MHz rather than the Snapdragon 1GHz chips we see in the high end phones.

Virgin Mobile in the UK has announced today that it will be offering the HTC Wildfire on it’s network in the UK. The message came from the official Virgin Media Twitter account where the company announced it is to get the new Wildfire smartphone, but prices are to be announced at a later date.

Right now we can speculate that the handset will be free, or very cheap on quite low plans such as the £20/month or £25/month contracts. We also expect a PAYG version will be launched also on the network. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4G Leaked Again

Things can’t be going too well for Apple [AAPL] at the moment after another iPhone 4G has been leaked in Vietnam. Perhaps we are looking at the same phone we have seen a couple of times before though. Right now, I’ve lost track of how many phones there have been captured on camera that all look very similar. I believe it might be the fifth as there was one captured earlier this year before the Gizmodo leak, then the Gizmodo leak, then Vietnam, then France and now Vietnam again. The last three and perhaps the first could all be the same unit though.

Either way, we now have a video of the iPhone running what appears to be some sort of diagnostic screen called Inferno. This looks to be a “bonfire” at the top of the screen with some text at the bottom of the screen showing some sort of USB status and a command saying Run Bonfire.

Some people believed the Inferno screen was just a static image, as in a sticker on the screen or a fake screen. We now see that this is part of the innards of the OS. [Read more…]

Sony PSP2 Leaks Continue – 3G, Touchscreen and More

Last week we heard that the Sony PSP2 was being planned for a launch later this year. More information has been found relating to a PSP2 and what we can expect to see in the launch (which will now happen early next year).

First off, it is now believed that the PSP2 will not be revealed at E3… instead, it will arrive at a slightly later date. It is believed that NDA’s have been signed for a few months now at certain publishers who will be developing games for the system.

On to the technical specs. We first hear that the PSP2 will have two cameras with one facing forwards and one facing back. Perhaps this will allow video calls to be made due to a rumoured 3G connection that will be built in. [Read more…]

HTC Wildfire Announced

HTC has announced the launch of a new Android based phone called the HTC Wildfire. The first and last time we heard of the Wildfire was when HTC ran a poll on a Facebook page to let users choose the name of the device.

‘Today’s social networks provide an essential forum for friendship with more than 400 million users many of whom are young adults actively sharing their lives with their friends through Facebook, said Florian Seiche, Vice President, HTC EMEA. ‘HTC Wildfire makes the HTC Sense experience available to young mobile users for the first time. It brings all your communications into one place, whether it’s through Facebook, Twitter, text messages, images or email, ensuring that you are never far away from the conversation and always close to your friends.

The HTC Wildfire has a 3.2 inch QVGA screen. The screen is capacitive touch as we normally expect on this class of smartphone. A 5 megapixel camera is found on the back and all the usual connectivity is thrown in there such as WiFi, Bluetooth as well as GPS for tracking your current location. [Read more…]
