It is now possible to Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 thanks to the latest Redsn0w update that launched a few hours ago. This jailbreak comes with a warning or 2 though such as recommending you jailbreak iOS 4.1 first so that you save SHSH before updating. This is quite a stern warning saying it will be needed in the future. Hopefully you didn’t rush and update to 4.2.1 just yet.
When Apple released the iOS 4.2 GM, developers began to notice that shared printers were being pulled from the service and that only a handful of select HP printers were actually compatible with iOS AirPrint (see list after the quotes below).
Today saw the launch of iOS 4.2 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. With this launch the MobileMe Find My iPhone app became available for free as a service for iPad, iPhone 4 and the latest generation iPod touch users. Although that’s all well and good, it does leave out older generation devices from using the free service.
Update: The iOS 4.2 update just went live for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
If you are eagerly awaiting the update of iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch then you’ll need to wait about another hour and a half or so. It is widely believed that the release time will be 10am PST.
Apple [AAPL] just announced that the iOS 4.2 update was being launched today. Mixed within that press release were details showing that Find My iPhone was now being made a free feature and that a MobileMe subscription would no longer be required for you to track your missing iOS 4.2 device. The Find My iPhone feature is available on the iPad, iPhone 4 and 4th Gen iPod touch only and requires you are running iOS 4.2 to activate it.
Just a few weeks ago, we reported that Apple [AAPL] was working on an integrated SIM card that could potentially cut the carriers out of the buying loop. What an integrated SIM card would do is come “blank” and when the phone is first used, you get to chose from a list of carriers which one you want to join and what price plan on. This in turn would prevent the need for Orange, O2 and others from selling the phone as essentially, they wouldn’t be needed as such (other than providing a price plan of course).
Some interesting information has been found in the iOS 4.2 GM updates that have been available for the last few weeks to iOS developers. The new hints in the beta code hint that Apple [AAPL] could be moving towards a free version of MobileMe. In the original iOS 4.2 GM launched early November the MobileMe login was switched from a MobileMe username to an Apple ID username and password.
Trademark details indicate that Apple [AAPL] could be using Carbon Fiber for the back cover of the iPad 2. What this would do is make the iPad 2 both strong and lighter than the original iPad.
Apple [AAPL] has released another version of iOS. This time iOS 4.2.1 GM can be found in the developers control panel at Apple and is ready for developers to download and test now.
The GSM Association is looking in to the idea of using embedded SIM cards in mobile phones beginning sometime in 2012. The new embedded SIM cards will be capable of being activated by software which means that one SIM card can be activated on any GSM network when the phone is purchased.
