Apple [AAPL] has passed RIM in the US and now holds the top spot for smartphones by a fraction of a percent.

Reports indicate that the total smartphone share (compared to feature phone share) is at 29.7 percent. When the smartphone section is broken down (seen below in the graph), iOS is showing to have a 27.9 percent share. This is now slightly ahead of RIM that has 27.4 percent. [Read more…]

iOS 4.2 Supports Tech to Reduce Network Congestion

Nokia Siemens has provided some interesting details that indicated the latest iOS 4.2.1 update Apple [AAPL] released last week, includes some new tech that helps reduce congestion on cellular networks. In doing this, it also increases battery life by decreasing network usage on the phone.

Nokia Siemens Networks is one of the worlds top suppliers when it comes to cellular infrastructure. The company also points out that Nokia Smartphones have also included this tech in the basebands of the phones since the beginning of this year. With Nokia and Apple both using the new tech, it will certainly take a lot of strain off the networks given that they account for more than half of the smartphone sales from what NSN says. AirPlay for Safari and Third-party Apps Landing 2011

According to an alleged email sent from Steve Jobs, we will be seeing AirPlay move over to Safari and 3rd party apps sometime in 2011.

The question was asked by a user of iOS 4.2 on both the iPad and iPhone 4 who asked if the ability to use AirPlay on the said apps would be possible. Another brief but positive answer came back as seen in the email below. [Read more…]

iPad 2 Camera Supplier Same as iPhone 4 Camera Provider

Rumors about the iPad 2 continue to circulate as we get closer to Apple [AAPL] announcing the product. The next rumor indicates that Apple could have selected the same supplier that creates the iPhone 4 cameras to also create cameras for the Apple iPad 2.

Largan Precision has declined to comment on market rumors indicating the company will be the sole lens module supplier for Apple‘s upcoming iPad 2 tablet with shipments to kick off in the first quarter of 2011, according to a company filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE).

PhotoFast Stops Production of MacBook Air SSDs

PhotoFast has stopped production of the 256GB MacBook Air SSD. This particular SSD module was capable of running faster than the official one supplied in the new MacBook Air models.

The reason that production stopped was apparently because Apple [AAPL] requested it. With PhotoFast being in the Apple MFi Program, it would have been in their interest to listen to them. [Read more…]

iOS 4.3 Release Date Could Be Early 2011

A rumored iOS 4.3 release date was set for sometime in December. However, it appears that this will not happen this year, but instead will now be early 2011.

The iOS 4.3 update was believed to bring subscriptions to the iPhone and iPad allowing news papers such as The Daily from News Corp to set up an auto-recurring subscription rather than relying on the user to re-purchase each and every week or month that the magazines are released. [Read more…]

iPhone 3G & 3GS Unlock Getting Ready for Launch

The iPhone Dev-Team has just announced in a blog post that Ultrasn0w is about to be updated to Ultrasn0w 1.2 (any moment now). The new 1.2 version is capable of unlocking an iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS on (as well as older baseband iPhone 4) running the following basebands…

iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and now 06.15.00

One thing you might note here is that 05.14 and 05.15 is missing from the list. Luckily there is a way around this where you download the iPad iOS 3.2.2 firmware and use the PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition to update the baseband to 06.15.00. This baseband is unlockable by the Ultrasn0w 1.2 tool. [Read more…]

iPhone Tethering on iOS 4.2.1 Locked on iPhone 3G

Apple launched iOS 4.2.1 at the beginning of this week. Some people running it on an iPhone 3G are reporting issues when the iPhone has been unlocked to use on another network. When doing that, the Internet Tethering option in some cases is removed.

This, of course, is for those running an iPhone 3G that has been officially unlocked as there is no unofficial unlock available just yet for those running iOS 4.2.1. [Read more…]

iPad Multi-User Browser Launches

One thing the Apple iPad lacks it a bit of privacy where some apps are concerned. If someone “borrows” your iPad then they have full access to most apps and most data unless the app is password protected.

The Switch app in the iTunes store tackles the problem of browser privacy by allowing several users to use the browser, but by each authenticating with their own username and password. What this does is let users keep their own bookmarks, tabs and history so that others don’t mess. [Read more…]

iPad Rotate Lock Switch Restored by NoMute App – Requires Jailbreak

When Apple [AAPL] released iOS 4.2.1 on Monday, as expected, the screen orientation lock switch was changed to a mute switch. To stop the screen rotating now requires that you double tab the home button, swipe to the side and tap a virtual button in the dock.

For some this is just fine and they are happy to do this, but the general consensus seems to indicate that people are a tad upset with this option. For those who don’t mind jailbreaking their iPad, there is a solution. [Read more…]

iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Update to iTunes 10.1 Recommended

Yesterday, the iPhone Dev Team released the iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak in the form of Redsn0w 0.9.6b4. Since its launch a few problems have been noticed while running the tool. The Dev Team now recommends that an update to iTunes 10.1 is best and for those running the tool on Windows 7, it’s recommended that you run the app in XP compatibility mode.

Also, there seems to be some who are unsure what a tethered boot is. For those running newer hardware on iOS 4.2.1, when you jailbreak it will require a tethered boot for now. This means that every time your iPhone reboots (ie the battery dies or it crashes), you’ll need to be next to a computer and re-run redsn0w to boot your device. [Read more…]
