iOS 4.2 Fixes Dialer Security Flaw

iOS 4.1 currently has a bug that lets you pass the lock screen and access the address book and make calls from the device.

The problem was spotted last week. With the iOS 4.2 release date getting closer, we learn that the bug is actually fixed in the new version and that when it rolls out, those updating will be secure again. [Read more…]

Samsung Galaxy Tab on Verizon Lacks Skype 3G Calling

When the Samsung Galaxy Tab launches on Verizon [VZ] in the next few weeks, the ability to make Skype calls over 3G will not be available.

Skype will still be available for the Verizon Galaxy Tab, but voice calls will be restricted to WiFi only. What makes this interesting is that a special version of Skype is installed on other Android handsets on Verizon and each of those do have the ability to make calls over 3G, so it isn’t clear why this is being blocked for the Tab. Mac Mini Price Cut in Non-US Markets

If you are looking to purchase a Mac Mini out of the US, then today is a good day as Apple [AAPL] has quietly dropped the price tag in various countries.

Over in the UK we see a £50 drop in price while in Europe, the price drop is 100.

For those still in the US, the price tag has been kept just the same at $699. [Read more…]

Redsn0w iOS 4.1 Jailbreak Now Available

The Redsn0w jailbreak for iOS 4.1 has been released. This particular iOS 4.1 jailbreak is compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, Apple TV (second gen), iPad and iPod touch.

It looks like geohot’s recent limera1n exploit for iPhone3GS/iPhone4/iPad/ipt3g/ipt4g/atv2g will be very beneficial to jailbreakers and unlockers for the next few months (at least). geohot’s limera1n program and the alternative greenpois1on program both use his same exploit (although greenpois0n refuses to tell you that, FWIW), and hopefully SHAtter can be saved for some later device.

Google Chrome OS SmartBook Could Land This Month

Digitimes is reporting that Google [GOOG] could be launching a Google Chrome OS smartbook this month. The report indicates that Google will be using a similar strategy to how the Nexus One was created. Ie, another company created the Google branded hardware.

Google’s Chrome notebook is expected to be manufactured by Inventec with initial shipments to reach 60,000-70,000 units. The Google Chrome notebook will feature an ARM-based platform and will not be selling through retail channels.

Verizon iPhone Landing Early 2011 According to Fortune

According to a report at Fortune, the Verizon [VZ] iPhone 4 will be landing early in 2011. There have been (according to Verizon), a number of meetings between Apple [AAPL] and Verizon for a number of years. That coupled with Verizon now selling the iPad seems to indicate that the device could be landing soon.

The Fortune article is certainly worth a read as it goes fairly in depth in to Verizon as a company and what can be expected from the network when it lands. [Read more…]

MacBook Air Graphical Glitch Surfaces

Some users seem to be having problems with their new MacBook Air laptops that launched just a few weeks ago. The problems are reported as effecting both the 11 and 13 inch models. The problems are described below…

The Air suddenly froze, cutting Bluetooth connection to my Magic Mouse (even after I restarted…I had to re-connect manually), and the screen started flickering like crazy. The only thing I was doing at the time was reading MacRumors forum threads and looking at MBA sleeves to buy – no YouTube or anything was open at the time. Only iTunes was open in the background.

You can’t see it well, but the flickering consisted of tiny green/red/maybe blue lines, kinda like when an old TV gets static.

A forced shutdown with the power button seemed to resolve it; closing the lid to make it sleep failed.

iOS 4.2 Jailbreak and Unlock to Follow 2 Days After 4.2 Release

MuscleNerd has announced on Twitter that the iOS 4.2 jailbreak and unlock will be about two days after iOS 4.2 is released by Apple [AAPL].

The Ultrasn0w unlock will be compatible with the iPhone 3GS and 3G on iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2 running the 05.14.02 baseband. Before updating your iPhone 3G or 3GS to iOS 4.2 you would be wise checking to see if the baseband is getting updated in that release. If so, you’ll need to either leave your phone on iOS 4.1 to unlock it, or use a tool to upgrade to 4.2 while preserving the older baseband. [Read more…]

When Australia switched clocks an hour a few weeks ago, a bug was spotted with the alarm clock that prevented alarms from sounding until an hour later. The bug is with recurring alarms which set of an hour later than the time set.

With Europe now switching clocks over the weekend, the bug is now here and it is expected that on November 7th the US will also see the bug in alarm clocks unless Apple [AAPL] push out a fix before hand. [Read more…]
