iMac Refresh Expected Soon Due to Short Supplies

Some reports today are indicating that the latest generation Apple iMac models will soon be experiencing some shortages. What this normally means is that Apple is planning on a refresh. The same happened with the iPad when the iPad 2 launched as well as the MacBook Pro back in February when the next gen model was being prepared for launch. It has also happened a number of times before.

So what can we expect from the new iMac range? What we hear is that Apple will likely keep the same design, same screen sizes and same keyboard etc… but will bump up the power of each model to include faster CPU’s, larger storage and we also expect to see the ThunderBolt (first seen in the MacBook Pro refresh this year) port being included in the refresh.

iOS 4.3.2 Update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Arrives

Apple has released an update for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The new version is 4.3.2 which is a minor update that brings a few bug fixes to the OS.

The fixes include the FaceTime problem where a blank screen or frozen video would occur during a call. Also, a fix specific to the iPad WiFi+3G model has been fixed which prevented some users from connecting to networks (international problem only). Finally, a number of other security updates were baked in to the update which we suspect just seal a few security holes, perhaps to help prevent those who update from jailbreaking with the current methods.

White iPhone 4 Could Arrive within Weeks

The White iPhone 4 has been very elusive over the last 9 to 10 months. It was first announced along with the regular iPhone 4 and since then, it has been delayed over and over to a point where most people believe Apple wont bother with the device and instead launch a white iPhone 5 in the next few months.

Bloomberg is now reporting that “three people with knowledge of the plans” have said the white iPhone will be launching within the next few weeks, before the end of April.

Thunderbolt Development Kits Promised by Intel – Coming This Quarter

Back on February 24 we saw the launch of the new Apple MacBook Pro line and along with that, the launch of the Thunderbolt port that allows for data to be transferred at high speed to connected devices. At the moment, the only way to use Thunderbolt technology is to buy a new MacBook Pro as well as a compatible Thunderbolt device, of which there are not actually that many (or any) about just yet.

This could all soon change though as Intel is now opening up. Thunderbolt and will be releasing development kits which will allow others to use the technology. The launch of the development kits would see the amount of products available quickly accelerate.

Success of iPad Causes Delays for BlackBerry PlayBook

Due to the success of the Apple iPad and the amount of devices it needs to fulfil orders, it seems to have caused a delay for the BlackBerry PlayBook to be launched. Digitimes is reporting that Apple took most of the available capacity which in turn, didn’t leave enough for a PlayBook launch.

Sources from touch screen panel makers also pointed out that PlayBook shipments were postponed for about a month from the original schedule due to a delay in software testing as well as shortage of touch panels because Apple already booked up most of the available capacity.

Verizon iPhone 4 Drops Less Calls than AT&T Version

AT&T and Apple has faced a bit of criticism over the years about the iPhone and it’s dropped call rate. It has never been completely clear as to where the fault is with some blaming one or the other.

Some data was collected in March that reveals the iPhone 4 on Verizon actually drops calls a lot less than the AT&T version. Numbers show that from those surveyed, 4.8% on AT&T had dropped calls, while only 1.8% on Verizon had experienced drop calls. [Read more…]

Developers Say Android Fragmentation is a Problem

In a recent survey, developers have hinted that developing for Android can be a bit of a problem. The reason for this is due to the fragmentation of the OS and the Android Market.

The main key points from the survey mention that device fragmentation was a huge (or meaningful) problem for 56% of developers. This number has increased over the last few months as well. Also, the break up of various Android app stores such as the official Android Market and the Amazon App Store is also another concern for developers. It seems like a good percentage want a single experience, just like the Apple App Store provides. [Read more…]

iPhone 5 Infographic Puts All the Rumors Together

The iPhone 5 could launch in June this year, although there has been a bit of talk of it not showing up till September of this year. Either way, the iPhone 5 (or 4GS) will eventually arrive and with it, a few tweaks here and there.

The infographic embedded below, shows a number of changes that might happen to the next generation iPhone and also gives a percentage of how likely the change will be made.

Some of the obvious changes include an updated camera, perhaps 8 megapixels on the back. We also hear that the Home Button might be dropped in favor of the multi-touch gestures used on iOS 4.3 (for developers). This is a little less likely due to 4/5 finger gestures being next to impossible on the small screen. We hear a slightly larger screen will be used, perhaps 4 inches. Again, Apple has always used the smaller 3.5 inch screen with the only main difference being the higher pixel density Retina Display on the iPhone 4. [Read more…]

Next Gen iPod Nano Could Get Camera(s)

The iPod nano is currently in its sixth generation. Most of the previous generations have seen changes to the design, with the 6th gen shrinking the unit right down and putting a touchscreen on the front of it.

We see today that Apple [AAPL], is working on a new seventh generation model that keeps the same form factor as the 6th gen model. The main difference though is that it looks like it will get a camera on the back, and perhaps on the front. The leaked image (larger version below), shows what looks to be the 6th gen device but with a camera hole cut out of the top right of the unit. [Read more…]

HTC Uploads Flyer Tablet Video to Youtube

HTC has uploaded a video to Youtube that shows more details about the new tablet called the HTC Flyer. The video explains the benefits of the 7 inch screen in that it makes the device lighter and still big enough to make useful. The 7 inch screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.

We also learn that the Flyer is built using a unibody, similar to how the iPad and other Apple products are made. The Flyer tablet runs a 1.5GHz CPU and uses the Scribe pen for digital note taking. [Read more…]

iPad 2 UK Sells Out

Reports today are hinting that the iPad 2 has sold out in the UK and that stock will not be available for a few more weeks now. The Daily Mail says that within 24 hours, all iPad 2’s we gone. What we have found is that a few other stores (non Apple stores) still have a few left here and there. If you want to still get your hands on one in the UK, check the likes of Argos through the morning. We found that very occasionally, a particular model would be available for next day or 2 day delivery. Other than that, most places have little or no stock.

It isn’t known just yet how many iPad 2 units were sold in the UK, or across Europe for that matter. We expect Apple to publish a press release in the next few weeks telling us that they beat last years iPad launch. We also expect that we might need to wait for the 2 – 5 week wait for UK shipments to pass so those numbers can also be reported on. [Read more…]

iOS 5 Could Bring More Graphics Driven UI Elements

We just mentioned that WWDC2011 will be happening in June. What we now hear is that iOS 5 could well be revealed at the conference although it might actually be not pushed out till September this year.

Some recent patents hint that Apple is working on making elements of the UI more graphical. What this means is that contacts could change from the plan scrolling text list to thumbnails of the people you want to call. The same could be said for music lists and other lists within the UI. [Read more…]
