Computer systems these days suffer with heat problems and need all sorts of fans, vents and heat sinks to keep them running cool so that the performance is kept at best and the system stays stable. For the type who love to overclock their PC (make it faster then it was designed for) the problem of heat increases. OCZ Technology specialises in reducing heat for processors and memory and has now created the Reaper HPC Edition. This is DDR2 memory PC2-9200 running at 1150Mhz and has a thermo-conductive copper heat pipe that acts as a conduit to help move the heat away from the RAM.

Having heat pipe technology, it quickly rids the heat and allows the memory to run at lower temperatures, thus allowing overclocking. With OCZ specializing in overclocking they allow this type of activity without voiding the warranty.

Sony Ericsson – TrackID

Sony continue to churn out some nice features on their W range of mobile phones. The latest feature is named TrackID in which you can record a sample of a tune you like, submit it and then comes back the answer to what the song is called, what album it is from and who the artist is. This is a very innovative idea from Sony which will allow many an annoyance to be solved when you just cannot remember the track that is playing. You also get the option to have the details sent to you as an SMS message with the service.

VisionQuest LCD TV

VisionQuest is not a company or brand name I am familier with, but I came across this LCD screen over at OhGizmo. The screen has the capability to display 480i, 480p, 720 and 1080i with a contrast ration of 1200:1. Response time is also quite quick at 8ms allowing for a nice clean/quick picture to be on screen.

Connectivity on the screen is not short and it has all the major types such as HDMI. Costing less then $1000 it is a bargain for a screen of this size.

Converting your Laptop to an SSD Drive

SSD (solid state drives) are very handy devices for a few reasons. First, they use less power and therefore can allow your battery powered device to run longer between charges. Second, they have no moving parts and tend to be built for slightly harsher environments. However, on the downside they are more expensive per GB to purchase. If money isnt a problem and you want to buy your self an 8GB+ card then read on.

This mod will allow you to convert a standard SSD drive in to a 2.5 inch laptop drive. The device is made by Addonics and is a compact flash adapter which allows you to connect 2 compact flash cards and connect them to where the regular laptop hard drive would sit.

On the downside also, you wont get the best speeds of the latest SSDs that are out but it is still a cool mod that can be done if desired.

New Sony RHT-G800 Cinema Stand

Personally I love huge big hi-def TV’s, and what better to acompany your nice shiny tv then this new stand from Sony, which features 5.1 built in speakers (the .1 being a subwoofer and not just a portion of a speaker). The technical people over at Sony have managed to recreate the surround sound-esque feel whilst keeping the speakers all neat and tidy within the stand. This is done to avoid the clutter that surround sound systems often create.

A touch screen remote and 4 inputs all but complete this stand allowing a plethora of devices, such as a dvd player, PS3 and even the good old Sky+ Box.

The stand will be available from May 2007, so get saving people!

If you are worried about running out of batter power in your all important Wii Bowling match then you need not worry any more. The Wiimote USB charger allows you to dock your Wiimote in a USB cradle and charge it up when not in use. This will ensure that every time you want to play you will always have a fully charged controller.

Power for the cradle is gained from the USB port on the back of the Wii console meaning no additional power outlet is needed. You are not restricted to using the USB port on the Wii and can use any USB for a PC, laptop or any other device with a USB output. The battery in the Wiimote is Lithium-ion and does not have problems with memory effect like other types of batteries can.

Steering Wheel Mounted Laptop
The steering wheel mounted laptop has to rank in the top 10 craziest gadgets around. I am unsure of the benefits of needing such a device. I do admit that the design of it is sleek and nice to look at, but the idea of it mounting in and around your steering wheel is just crazy.

I doubt that this laptop will hit the shelves soon but if it does then just make sure you dont try to use it while driving 😉

The Seagate FreeAgent is more then just a portable USB hard drive in which I thought it actually was at first. It is actually your whole computer environment that can be stored in your pocket. It is aimed at those who travel a lot on either business or pleasure and allows you to keep everything with you, including your computer settings. You can go to any PC with Windows USB 2.0 and connect it and you have your own PC right there to use. It is compatible with Windows XP and 2000 and just needs 2 USB ports to function.

Some of you might ask about using a laptop, and why would you need this. Not all of us have laptops and want to carry them around with us. Having this device will weigh you down by just 6oz and stow away in a pocket or your bag, but yet allow you to still fully use your computer while you are on the go. This is an excellent idea and suited to many people.

Old News but Still Cool – Pioneer PDSP1

The Pioneer PDSP-1 was first mentioned a number of years ago. I never noticed it back then in 2002, but I did recently and thought it was worth writing about due to the different approach to a speaker system that it has.

The PDSP-1 was a way of integrating surround sound in to your home which reproduced multi channel sound via the 1 speaker panel. To do this it has 254 individual speaker units which it uses to bounce sound of walls and give the effect that sounds are coming from behind you and all around you for that fact. 7 beams of sound are created which can be adjusted, focused or made wider depending on the room size and shape you have. It uses Dolby Digital and DTS decoders and digital amplifiers to create a clear sound.

The Sony Ericsson W range of phones has always been full of great features along with the style that you would expect from Sony. The W580 is the latest in this range and has an interesting feature that I have not seen on any other mobile phone – a pedometer. This is indeed an excellent and innovative idea because each of us probably carries around our mobile phones everywhere with us. Being able to keep track of your steps, calories and running speed, distance and time are great little features. The phone comes in 2 flavours which are Style White and Urban Grey.

As well as the use of a pedometer you get a 2 mega pixel camera, 2 inch QVGA screen, EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 connectivity and a generous amount of memory at 512Mb via a memory stick micro card.

The phone is set to launch later this year and is one phone worth waiting for.

In Flight Wifi coming to the US

AirCell will be bringing Wifi access to airplanes soon. It will use the same frequency that air phone services used to use and provide transfer speeds the same as what they would be on the ground. Cost for the service is expected to be $10 for the day which depending on what you use it for it could be well worth paying that.

The service at first will not allow VOIP services such as Skype, Vonage V-Phone etc. although it would be possible and might be opened up at a later date. The equipment needed can be installed overnight for $100000 and the costs that airlines run in to for this would be made back with a revenue share with AirCell.

The services are set to be available with in 12 months allowing the whole cabin of the plane to be a flying hotspot for its passengers.

What are your thoughts on this? I am personally ok with this as time wasted travelling can be put to productive use. However, I am not keen on the idea of VOIP being enabled although it might be useful to have cheaper calls in another section of the plane for emergency calls home etc…

iPod Fireplace Dock

iPod docks are very handy devices allowing you to connect to a bunch of audio and visual equipment while charging at the same time. The next one in line is very unexpected though and comes in the form of an iPod fireplace dock. The fireplace is a CalSpas FRP4300 version and has built in 4 x 9 inch speakers and comes with a remote control to control the iPod.

My honest opinion on this… Its a little crazy 🙂
