New Mobile Key Layout

Phone Keypad
LG have created the AX490 phone which has a unique key layout. Apparantly the predictive text on the 1 – 0 keypad layout does not allow you to text quick enough. What LG have done is create a keyboard which has the regular 10 numeric keys on, but in between each key in the corners is a charachter. If you count them you will see A – Z (all 26 letters). Seeing the speed that my sister can text on the standard 10 numeric keys I would be suprised if this could increase the speed, but it will be interesting to see how it goes, or if it makes the keypad too cluttered.

The ePaper only draws on power when the image needs to change.

Wood Frame HDTV

LG Wood
If you have a spare $10k kicking around and like your TV to be encased in wood like the good old CRT days then LG have the answer for you. The LG HD 60PT1DRA is for you. It is a 60 inch High Definition (1080p) which has a woodern surround come in 2 selections which are walnut or ash. An additional feature is the built in hard drive which can record from the TV or movies so that you can watch 1 channel while recording the other. Recording is also done in HD so you do not loose the effect of the high quality you expect from these types of screen.

Overall I am impressed with the design and look of the screen, but for $10k I would rather spend the money elsewhere and probably make my own wood surround for my screen.

The autonomous starfish bot looks incredible. It starts out flat on the floor and can learn to work and when damaged it will then limp. The algorithm that runs the robot can be adapted to more complex machinery. Plans are that the robot will sense injury and learn how to repair it’s self and adapt to the environment around it.

The new screen will be around the 3.5 to 3.8 inch size which will certainly make the DS more competitive against the Sony PSP. If the rumour is correct then the new DS should be out mid 2007.

WirelessHD

WirelessHD
WirelessHD is set for a launch in 2008. WirelessHD works on the idea of having everything connected together without cables. Just looking around the back of my TV shows that this idea is great. I have several cables behind my TV and without touching them they get tangled and look a mess.

WirelessHD is a joint venture between LG, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, SiBEAM, Sony and Toshiba. It is named WirelessHD or WiHD and it is intended to enable high definition audio and video streaming to consumer electronic devices. The system will run on the 60Ghz frequencies and data transmit speeds are supposed to be incredible. This in turn will create point to point display for HDMI and DVI.

More details will follow as they arrive.

Buccaneer Shooting Game

Shooting games are great! Not because it’s a way to vent frustration, but more because it’s probably a pride thing knowing that you have a better aim then your best mate. The Buccaneer shooting game comes with a gun but doesnt actually shoot out anything. All is good though because of the built in infra red sensors on the target. When you shoot the pistol and you are on target then the infra red sensor detects this and makes the spring loaded plugs launch any object on top of the log in to the air. Sounds great! To add to it there is a nice “piioowww” shooting noise which ads that edge of realism to this.
