3D Maps from Apple and Google compared

Over the last few months both Apple and Google have announced 3D maps are coming. Google quickly delivered by adding 3D to Google Earth on iOS. Apple is taking a little longer as the company is dropping Google Maps as the default map in iOS 6 and is going for its own mapping system.

iDownloadBlog decided to put maps up against each other to see which company produces the best 3D maps. At the moment Apple has the higher quality maps although Googles version of the same cities load a little quicker and that app offers a smoother experience.

HTC Desire S and Thunderbolt to get Ice Cream Sandwich update

HTC has announced that the Desire S and Thunderbolt will be receiving an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich by the end of this month. The announcement was made through Facebook which has been the way HTC has made these sorts of announcements for a while now.

WiFi Plus Cellular option appears in iOS 6 beta 4

Apple is adding a new setting to iOS 6 that will make data connections run a little smoother. The setting is called WiFi Plus Cellular and has the aim of making connections better for situations where WiFi starts to struggle and slow down. When this happens, connections will jump automatically to 3G while the wireless network clears up any congestion.

T-Mobile US Galaxy Note now available

T-Mobile in the US is now selling the Samsung Galaxy Note. The large smartphone has been available in various locations since October 2011 but has now finally made it on to the T-Mobile network.

The Note costs $249 although to get it at that price you’ll need to mail in a $50 rebate. This is also the price of the device on a two-year contract.

The original Android smartphone can now run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Note that this isn’t an official update by any means, but some developers have managed to port Jelly Bean on to the device to see how it runs.

Google self-driving cars log over 300,000 miles of automated driving

Google [GOOG] has been working on self driving cars for a number of years now. Over time the company has managed to fine tune the technology so that they are almost in a position to be used on the roads. In fact, one state has already approved them although the rule is that a driver needs to be behind the wheel to monitor things.

CWM.zip for Galaxy Note Causes Hard Bricks to occur

Samsung Galaxy Note users (as well as other ICS device users) who root and update the OS of their device to leaked builds need to be very careful at the moment. Due to a problem with some Galaxy Note devices as well as other Samsung devices, the leaked builds are bricking some devices.

It turns out that there is a major bug in the leaked ICS kernel that affects the /data partition in the eMMC chip, which apparently gets corrupted during certain operations such as wiping and flashing.

Since the hack last week, Apple has now suspended (temporarily) password resets over the phone of AppleIDs. The reason seems to be to buy them time to figure out exactly how and why the password reset happened.

Work begins on Microsoft Surface 2 Tablets

Although the Microsoft Surface tablet hasn’t launched yet, word at the moment hints that Microsoft [MSFT] is already hard at work on the next generation device. This information is really no big surprise as various companies will have a generation or two in design for the coming years.

Although MIcrosoft dismissed this by saying that there are just two versions, the RT and Pro versions, certain job openings say things a little differently.

The Google Nexus 7 Tegra 3 chip is clocked at 1.2GHz normally. One person has managed to overclock the CPU up to 1.64GHz and has benchmarked the device to see how much the performance has increased.
