We recently found out that the Motorola DROID was going to be getting an Android 2.1 update this month sometime. The exact date has now been provided and is happening tomorrow (March 18).

The updates won’t all happen at once with some upgrades starting before others although there should only be a day or two delay between updates with them finishing by the weekend from what we understand.

The information has come from a screen capture that shows the release date and what is included in the update and says the roll outs will start at 12pm EST. [Read more…]

Yesterday we showed a few phones that were the first handsets to run Windows Phone 7 Series. One of them was a device by Samsung that some believed to be a Samsung Omnia HD (i8910HD). This has now been confirmed although it’s still not clear if the Omnia HD will actually receive a Windows Phone 7 Series update.

The demo used on the phone was just a one off as the phone apparently received a multitouch upgrade with a WVGA screen and a 1GHz chip.

When compared to the original phone it has the same three buttons below the screen that are a requirement although for the demonstration purposes the buttons were relabelled to Start, Search and Back. [Read more…]

In a surprising move from Microsoft [MSFT] it turns out that Windows Phone 7 Series will not have copy and paste (ie, a clipboard function). Microsoft have always offered this capability for as long as I can remember on mobile devices but for now users will not be able to move or copy text around between applications, or within a document.

Reasons for this are as follows… “There is a data-detection service built into the text-handling API that will recognize phone numbers and addresses, but Microsoft says most users, including Office users, don’t really need clipboard functionality.”

I can’t say I agree with most users not using clipboard functions. Although I use that feature a lot more on my computer, I still have a need for it on my phone. [Read more…]

T-Mobile have confirmed the launch date and price for the HTC HD2 on their network. The HTC HD2 will be launched March 24 and will cost $199.99.

The release date and phone price were already known from unofficial sources, but T-Mobile have actually confirmed this themselves. The $199.99 price is for a contract version of the phone. An off contract version is also available that will cost $450.

The HTC HD2 on the T-Mobile networks brings a few unique features making it slightly different from other versions of the HD2. Out of the box you get access to Blockbuster video on demand. The memory card has a couple of Transformers movies pre-loaded and access to a number of channels including MTV, NBC and a few others. [Read more…]

The minimum specs have been revealed for Windows Phone 7 Series devices including the memory, processor and graphical requirements that all hardware running the operating system will have to adhere to.

The list starts off with the screen which needs to be multi-touch supporting at least four contact points. Sensors that have to be included are A-GPS, Accelerometer, Compass, Light and Proximity. The camera on the back of the device has to be capable of at least 5 megapixels and can include higher resolution sensors.

Memory wise the device needs to have just 256MB including an 8GB flash or more. The GPU needs to be capable of DirectX9 acceleration. [Read more…]

There seems to be a few HTC rumours around this week with the latest one being that HTC are working on the HTC Touch Pro3 with a tentative launch date of this summer.

The rumoured information comes from the XDA Developers forums where the information says the device will be smaller and slimmer than the Touch Pro2 (pictured above).

Other than that there is no other information other than it could possibly run Windows Phone 7 Series (assuming it meets the criteria). [Read more…]

If you are a Google Android device user in Canada then you should now be able to download paid apps from the Android Market.

People are currently reporting that they are able to pay for apps now which up till now, hasn’t been possible in the country. However, it seems like only customers on Rogers and Fido currently have this ability with users on Bell and TELUS still not able to get the downloads.

It is unknown what hurdles or how many there were that prevented this function from working, but it’s good to hear of some progress in that area although we do hope that the other two mobile networks follow on and allow the same. [Read more…]
