Skype have released a beta version of Skype for Symbian based phones. The beta version is still in testing, hence the version, but still allows you to make Skype to Skype calls along with Skype Out being available too. Calls can be received to your Online number on this version and other features such as Instant Messaging and file transfer is also available.
With it being a beta version of the Skype software they are asking that you do provide feedback if you witness any problems with the software.
Right now the software is compatible with handsets running Symbian and to use it you will need either a wifi or 3G data connection (they recommend using an unlimited data plan) to make and receive calls. [Read more…]
Spotify has now been released for Symbian based smartphones. By launching Spotify for Symbian phones, they have opened up to a huge market. Previously the service was only available for iPhone and Android phones.
Symbian have launched the Horizon App store that aims to compete against app stores already open by Android, BlackBerry, iPhone and Windows Mobile. The Horizon App store went live today along with the first 50 applications. Symbian also have plans to allow 1000’s more applications through the system next year.

For the last few years the GSM Association has been trying to get a charging standard across all mobile phones. Finally, the new standard has emerged with microUSB being the new way to connect a charger to your mobile phone. The roll out will start in Europe over the next few years where the large manufacturers which includes LG, Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Research in Motion, NEX, Qualcomm and TI. Strangely enough, there is no mention of HTC who have become big in the smart phone race. However, I believe that most, if not all, of their phones already use the microUSB standard to charge.
A new star rating system is being introduced for mobile phones which will show you how good the mobile phone charger is for the environment. The system has been developed and is supported by LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericsson. The system gives a better star rating depending on how much energy it saves when the charger is left plugged in.
This strangely cool looking phone is a device that uses E-Ink and no buttons to make a Nokia Aeon look-alike phone. Of course it wont be a surprise that this phone is just a concept.
