Apple Patent for Slide to Unlock and Character Popping Approved

Apple [AAPL] has won a patent for a couple of software features found in iOS.

The first is in relation to the “Slide to Unlock” bar that is found when you switch on an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. The second is in relation to the character-pop on the virtual keyboard that Apple uses.

What it basically all means is that you can’t copy Apple by creating a Slide to Unlock that looks like the version that Apple uses. Also you cannot create a keyboard with popping characters like shown in the diagram above. [Read more…]

Vodafone Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot Launches

Vodafone has launched a new Wireless Mobile broadband hotspot. The mobile WiFi, or MiFi, allows up to 5 wireless devices to attach up to it and share a 3G or HSDPA signal depending on the area where you use it.

The Vodafone model is made by the same company who make the Three MiFi, Huawei and works very similar to the Three model in that you switch it on, it connects to a 3G or HSDPA network and then allows up to five wireless devices to easily connect. Unlike the older mobile broadband modems that required you install software to connect up to the 3G services, the MiFi models have software built in that connects up for you and allow anybody to connect by entering the correct encryption key. Over in the US, it appears that the Dell Streak will skip Android 2.1 and jump straight to Android 2.2. This information comes from a member of staff at Dell who posted an answer on Twitter…

@dzerveviktory Honest answer is that it’s complicated. From the info I have, current plan in the US is to go right to Froyo. #dellstreak

35 Dollar Tablet Demod on Video

The 35 dollar tablet was recently revealed. It appears to be another type of cheap computing device that probably wont launch at $35 like previous attempts at the $100 laptop. But, we’ll remain hopeful that it does happen.

The video below shows the Android 1.6 based tablet running at some speed although the video looked to be running a little faster. If it runs as quick as it does in the video it will be quite amazing. What will be more amazing is seeing it launch at $35 which we hope it can as that will help out a lot of children learning in the future. [Read more…]

Samsung Epic 4G Review Roundup

Sprint [S] is launching the Samsung Epic 4G in the next couple of weeks. The Epic 4G is Sprint’s version of the new Galaxy S class smartphones that Samsung is pushing out. The differences with this version of the Galaxy S class is that it has a slide out QWERTY keyboard along with 4G connectivity making it easier for some to use who prefer not to use a virtual keyboard, and also quicker thanks to it using 4G rather than 3G.

The screen on the Epic 4G is 4 inches and is a Super AMOLED type built by Samsung. The touchscreen also uses capacitive as can be expected on a phone of this type. When it launches it will run Google Android 2.1 which will be followed by an OTA update to Android 2.2 later on this year.

Verizon iPhone 4 Rumor Suggests Larger Screen

For a while now some rumours have been going around about the Verizon iPhone 4. The latest rumour suggests that Apple [AAPL] will start manufacturing it in November in preparation for a January release.

The new iPhone 4 on the Verizon network will of course be CDMA compatible. However, DVICE is reporting that along with the CDMA innards, we can also expect to see a faster 1.2GHz CPU, a larger Retina Display and an internal antenna to prevent the death grip.

What are your thoughts on this? Would Apple change the iPhone 4 this much for Verizon users (or any network for that matter). It seems a little far fetched to us. [Read more…]
